Interested artists were invited to attend an informational workshop in May. Acceptable band and solo/duo applications were submitted by August 31, 2013. Submissions were further checked for adherence to IBC rules and completeness.

The St. Louis Blues Challenge Final Competition and Judging will be held Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Kirkwood Station Brewing Company, 105 East Jefferson, Kirkwood Missouri from 3 pm to 8 pm.

The Blues Foundation recommends that all Affiliated Organizations in their competition use established IBC scoring criteria for local challenge judging. Scoring categories include Talent, Vocal, Blues Content, Stage Presence and Originality. 1. Blues Content: Everyone has his or her own interpretation of what is and is not Blues. Thus, any given three-judge panel will include members with varying opinions of Blues, covering the spectrum of Blues whenever possible, from the most traditional to soul blues and rock blues. Bands should pick material carefully. At the Memphis quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals, the judges are Blues professionals, not a bar crowd, and are likely to be unimpressed with song selections that are uninspired. (Call this--with all due respect to Sir Mack Rice and Wilson Pickett--the “no Mustang Sally rule.”) 2. Vocals: The act’s vocal skills. 3. Talent: The act’s instrumental skills. 4. Originality: Original work is encouraged. Cover tunes are allowed but playing the recorded rendition lick by lick is discouraged; will not be looked upon favorably by the judges; and will be reflected in scoring. 5. Stage Presence: Over the years, the quality of talent has risen so dramatically that the Blues Foundation no longer considers this an “amateur” competition. Most contestants have performed on stage enough to know that they are not simply playing music, but putting on a show. This category rates how “sellable” a band may be. To reflect the relative importance of each category in the success of a band, a band’s score in each category is weighted. Raw scores for Blues Content is multiplied by four, Talent and Vocals by three and Originality and Stage Presence are multiplied by two. The total in each category represents the weighted score for that category. Total possible weighted score is 140. EIGHT ACTS (FIVE BANDS AND THREE SOLOS/DUOS) WILL COMPETE ON OCTOBER 13 FOR THE CHANCE TO REPRESENT ST. LOUIS AT THE IBC IN JANUARY 2014. WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE COMPETITION. THE WINNERS OF EACH CATEGORY AGREE TO PERFORM TOGETHER IN A SHOWCASE AND FUNDRAISING EVENT AT BB’s JAZZ, BLUES AND SOUPS ON DECEMBER 8, 2013, 8 PM TO 12 AM. St. Louis Blues Challenge Sunday October 13 The St. Louis Blues Society BluesLetter 3 Al Holliday & the Eastside Rhythm Band It seems that every day, it is so very hard to find something that is truly genuine. Al Holliday, with every bit of help from the East Side Rhythm Band, brings just that. The name of this band pays tribute to the burning Rhythm and Blues music that has come from our beloved Metro-East. This band is deeply influenced by this music, along with classic Soul, and the music of New Orleans - to create their own natural sound. The East Side Rhythm Band is built on the rock solid foundation of the deep rhythm section of Neil Ghanti and Caleb Klinger. Roll- ing deep with a battery of horn players, set this band up, and let them blow! Over the top of the whole thing, Al Holliday testifies, and there is not one jive bone in that man’s body. Big Mike Aguirre and the Blu-City All-Stars When you hear Big Mike Aguirre play guitar, you know where he’s coming from: the East Side where the blues isn’t for tourists, it’s for survivors. Big Mike is from Belleville, Illinois, and he sounds like he’s cut his teeth in every working-class juke-joint from Brooklyn to Wellston. He began his career at the age of 19 playing under the tutelage of St. Louis blues legends David Dee, Big George Brock, and Boo Boo Davis. In 2010, he founded the Blu-City All-Stars, a world-class group comprised of St. Louis’s finest blues musi- cians. Now 32, he recently completed his first international tour in the Netherlands in April of 2013. In February 2014, he will take a shot at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Make no mistake, BluCity All Stars are taking St. Louis Blues to a whole new level. A grinding and slashing player, he channels the overdrive of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison but also possesses a lyrical acuity that shows how closely he’s listened to Keith Richards and Magic Sam. While he has been known as a talented guitarist on the St. Louis scene for quite some time, his real secret weapon is his vocals. He is a gifted and soulful singer, one who continues to grow in talent and scope all the time. Whatever shape his blues

4 The St. Louis Blues Society BluesLetter After four decades of live gigs,

“The Bumble Bee” still plays every Kirkwood Station Brewing Company 3 pm to 8 set like it was his last. City, country, fingers, picks, or slide, Bob lays down the foundation of all American Music: The Blues. shuffles, bluesy swing, and country twobeats merge like the mighty Missouri and Missis- sippi Rivers just above the great music city of St Louis, Missouri. Whether pickin or slidin on his old Bob National Resonator or Silvertone electric, the music explodes, seduces and grooves. “Bumble Bee” Witnessing Bob’s dangerous guitar and passionate vocals for the first time, even Kamoske the most cynical of listeners sit back and muse: I guess the Blues gonna be alright.

Dawn Weber’s Swinging Blues Review Dawn Weber grew up on the Border of Wisconsin and Minne- sota in a town called Waukon, Iowa. At the age of 16 she knew she wanted to be a professional musician and got on a Grey Hound bus that took her to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to study at a performing arts high school. This is where her journey began to where she is today. Dawn studied trumpet intensely on the classical side and on the jazz side. After graduating from the North Carolina School of the Arts she attended the highly esteemed conservatory Cleveland Institute of Music. Here she was trained to be an orchestral trumpet player while also studying jazz and freelancing in the Cleveland music scene, playing everything from Salsa, to jazz, to classical, to rock. After graduating from Cleveland Institute of Music she moved her way out to St. Louis. It wasn’t long before musicians and the people of St. Louis started to get to know her. Her first group she joined in St. Louis was the popular Vargas Swing. This is the group that groomed Dawn to also becoming a vocalist, songwriter, and front personality. Their mod swing sound that was bluesy and rockin’ took them on the road all over the country. After the group deciding to go different directions Dawn found herself writing, singing, and playing trumpet for the Urban Jazz Naturals, an electronic based group. That broadened her writing style into a new genre. Currently Dawn is one of the top performers in St. Louis. You can even see her playing in the trumpet section with the St. Louis Symphony. Dawn’s current projects that she writes, sings, and plays trumpet for are the Dawn Weber Group, Dawn We- ber’s Swingin’ Blues Review, Dawn Weber and the Electro Funk Assembly, and Naked Rock Fight (a soul, groove, fusion project). No matter what show of Dawn’s you will see, you will be highly entertained and sure to leave with your soul uplifted! Check out www.dawnweber.com to see her schedule. The St. Louis Blues Society BluesLetter 5 Miss Molly Simms with Adam Andrews Smoldering, angry and saucy; Daddy's Little Girl is a full grown woman now (and more than a bit pissed). Miss Molly Simms can sweep the floor with tender ruminations on loves lost and quiet yearning (along the lines of Lucinda Williams), but not before setting the situation straight with a few doses of hard-earned sass and voodoo bile. Miss Molly has shared the stage with acts ranging from Clownvis to Chuck Berry. Her recent solo release, Revenants, was recorded on all analog equipment born on or around 1979 with engineer Erik Thompson as well as at the famed RCA Studio B using Elvis's own microphone. Voted best female vocalist 2010 in Saint Louis publication 'The Riverfront Times' at age 20, Molly has traveled from LA to Louisiana and released two albums since her debut in 2008. "Her voice is deep, unaffected, and seemingly full grown" says the RFT "She's making you feel what she feels, taking a simple emotion and turning it into art."

Biography

"Simply put, Pamela Devine has a captivating voice and sense of melody. Imagine Adele and Amy Winehouse with a cool indie vibe. All the S-words apply here: Sexy, Sultry, Sensational music!" - Bob Baker, author of "Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook" and half of the musical duo Soul Massage

Does Pamela Devine sing like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, or Ani Franco? No---but if all those singers could be on one stage, Pamela Devine would be more than worthy of her spot on that stage with them. She aptly represents her adopted home of St. Louis, Missouri---an important center in the history and the future of jazz, blues, and rock.

"This lady sings with a whole lot of soul and passion ... .The real deal.” - Buffalo Bob, iconic St. Louis blues musician and composer, his band has backed Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, the Coasters, Johnnie Johnson, and numerous other artists of international fame.

Pamela Devine has performed live music locally in St. Louis since 1985 and has sung with the best musicians in St. Louis. Of her life long devotion to music she says, "The reason I write and perform music is that it is my life's purpose. When I sing these songs, I feel an absolute obligation to deliver them so they are directly injected into the heart. I sing all that was given to me for no other reason than to share it with you." Pamela is working on her debut album in which she is writing, arranging, producing and performing each of the songs. It is a labor of love, 25 years in the making.

Recently, she has undergone an amazing personal and musical transformation that she has named her "Soul Flight.” It is the culmination of years of training, experience, and a tenacity to succeed. When asked about her original music arrangements, she will tell you they are auditory gifts to her. And it is clear these arrangements support her honest lyrics and her powerful passionate vocal delivery by blending soul, blues, and jazz with a less than considerate groove.

“It has been my honor to get to know and hear Ms. Pamela Devine. I consider her the greatest undiscovered talent I have ever heard in my lifetime. Music is about soul and passion: Pamela is the most soulful and completely passionate vocalist I know. Every note she gives to us in performance is from her heart. She makes you feel she has lived the lyrics she sings. Art and life merge into one voice. She is the real deal.” - Mark L. Arbogast, St. Louis guitar player and composer and member of the Allman Brothers tribute band, “The Brothers”

Pamela’s debut album is scheduled for release in March 2014. A worldwide tour to support its release will follow. The Alley Tones Formed in March of 2012, to play and preserve the blues art form, the four members immediately came together as a unit, proving the blues is a universal language. Age nor background separates any of the players. Blues standards was the starting point. We gathered together individual influences to mix with it on the way. There was a com- mon thread in a respect for the fundamentals of the style. Staying deep in the pocket, but turning the lead guitar and vocals loose to improvise kept it interesting while keeping it super tight. St. Louis, Chicago and Memphis are the three most important blues cities on the planet. Playing blues in the St. Louis metro area regularly while hitting the road occasionally to do other cities and festivals is what we like to do. We have an offer to be signed to a label, but so far we prefer to make our own original recordings in our home studio. We are very encour- aged by the audience response to our show. There are fewer slow blues tunes than some bands, and we love slow blues, but we like to keep it hopping. We love jump blues which is essentially swing from the 1940's. All the tunes are super danceable. We have a large collection of songs and we vary the set list to accommodate everybody. The St. Louis Blues Society BluesLetter 11 Were You There? REAL PEOPLE - REAL BLUES Tommy Halloran and Guerrilla Swing at the Blues City Deli By Miss Vicki Tommy Halloran is an extraordinary talent to say the least. On Saturday, September 21 Tommy Halloran and Guerrilla Swing took the Blues City Deli stage with a very young outstanding band. Guerrilla Swing includes Tommy on guitar and vocals, Adam Hucke on horns and vocals, Mark Wallace on standup bass and Kaleb Kirby on drums.

These young guys showed us the real deal. Tommy has a smooth voice, perfect for the style of music per- formed. The sun was shining and the songs were perfect for the day; “Sunny Side of the Street,” “Sun’s Gonna Shine in my Backdoor Someday,” and “You Are My Sunshine” was perfect for a Saturday afternoon at the Deli.

I really enjoyed it when Tommy would mix it up New Orleans style. It reminded me of the Bottoms Up Blues Gang and how they mix, match and totally change the song. Adam Hucke did several songs on the Flugel- horn and traded licks with Tommy. Adam muffled his horn while Tommy mouthed the trumpet songs. We were all wowed with the true crowd pleaser.

The style of music performed on this particular day was jazzier than the blues that usually graces the stage of the Blues City Deli, but these boys mixed it up and wore us out! We even brought them back for an encore, which means they were great and we wanted more!

I had only a brief time with each of them to delve into their previous music experiences. Tommy and Adam have been playing together since Adam was 15. He is 32 now—you do the math. Mark and Kaleb joined Tommy and Guerrilla Swing more recently. The number of young and talented musicians we have in St. Louis never ceases to amaze me. ♫

This 2013 double-disc release, by one of the best bluesmen who has ever walked this planet, provides ample evidence that Buddy Guy’s vocal and six string prowess continues at a high level. The disc titled Rhythm delivers lusher, uptown urban soulful tracks with plenty of support by backing vocalists, keyboards and the Muscle Shoals Horns. The Blues disc focuses on sparer, closer-to-the-soil Delta and Chicago-style blues material. Five tracks feature guest performers who are all Buddy Guy admirers. Keith Urban, Kid Rock, Beth Hart and Gary Clark, Jr. all contribute on one track each, as well as the Aerosmith brotherhood of Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford on another. With eighty-one minutes of total music on both CDs, there ought to have been a way to put all the material on one disc, though the two-disc plan does organize the tracks in a manner that allows the listener to pick one or the other, depending on your mood and preference du jour. This material is of comparable quality to Buddy Guy’s 2010 single disc release, Living Proof, for which Mr. Guy was awarded yet another Grammy, and which includes guest appearances by B.B. King and Carlos Santana. In fact, if the latter CD is not in your library, and if you wanted only a single-disc recent release by this towering figure in the blues world,Living Proof ought to satisfy pretty well. ♫

The Barry White Experience Eric Conley, vocals Known for his distinctive bass that is the voice of romance, Barry White is a legend. The St. Louis Symphony performs White’s popular hits including “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything,” and “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe.”
