We were milling around in Barnes and Noble not too long ago, waiting for some of my wife's college friends to show up, when I flipped through this tome. Needing a new series to read now that I'm caught up on Usagi Yojimbo, I eventually decided to give it a shot. Yeah, I should have picked this up decades ago. For my money, ElfQuest has a lot going for it. It's not your typical Tolkien by way of Dungeons and Dragons fantasy. There are science fantasy elements lurking in the background. The Wolfriders have more in common with Native American culture than they do Professor Tolkien's creations. I have to think there's a little Michael Moorcock in their parentage as well. Instead of wanting to save the world, the Wolfriders and their elfin allies seek only to find where they came from and where The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 belong. Flowery hippy crap aside, this is great stuff. The art isn't your The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 comic fare of the time period. Wendy Pini drew inspiration from more than the usual suspects of the day, from diverse sources as Disney cartoons and manga. She puts a lot of detail in the background, probably more than she needs to, and her elves are both beautiful and alien. It was easy to get enthralled by the adventures of Cutter, Skywise, and the rest as they go from adventure The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 adventure, battling men, trolls, and even other elves in their quest for the truth. Since the Pinis are working without a net, I had no idea who would live or die. There's not a lot else I can share without spoiling too much. The Complete ElfQuest is a journey I should have embarked on years ago. Sep 27, Sud rated it it was The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 Shelves: comicsfantasy. ElfQuest was a pleasant surprise. I had a vestigial memory of this comic from when I was a child and once I saw it went "Huh! I kinda remember that. Allow me the use of the trite "Ahead of it's time" to describe my feelings for this epic story. In a comic achievement rivaled only, in my slight knowledge, by the excellent Dave Sim in his "Cerebus" magnum opus. What do I speak of? The ability to create a unique story out of ElfQuest was a pleasant surprise. The ability to create a The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 story out of their fecund imaginations and then not only write the story, illustrate the story, publish as an independent comic house andperhaps most significantly, maintain a vast, sweeping story arc for hundreds of issues. Creative talent of this magnitude is always a joy to behold and speaks to the ability of these authors to fulfill mankind's ancient desire for great stories. High Fantasy generally is The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 preserve of "secondary" worlds. No grimdark here. No modern environments. It's a realm that is populated by eleves, trolls, magic, etc. That's what ElfQuest is at it's heart. But it is so much more. It's not a kid's story though it shares the obvious elements of one. It has many mature themes. Death is no stranger here and it is final unlike modern mainstream comics where characters like Batman have died several dozen times within the last year. They had main characters of different colors the main Elves, the Wolf Riders, are brown skinnedthere is a homosexual character, believable and tough female characters, open depiction not graphic of sexual acts rare back in in a comicand an overarching theme of varied races working for a common goal. Mind you this was But unlike their modern comic kin this message is delivered sans the virtue signalling and unsubtle preaching. Modern comic writer's may care to take note-this is how you spread a positive liberal message. Allow the story to make the point. Leave the crap you learned in your one or two political science classes from some third rate leftist professor that deigned to teach at your third rate school behind. I know a biased clueless talking point when I see one. Windy Pini weaves a wonderful tale of inclusion, overcoming racial The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1, and different sexual orientations in an artful and completely classy way. I miss the old school liberals, they managed to package their beliefs in a much classier and subtle way. I would recommend ElfQuest to anyone. They have developed a kinship with the wolves and live in the forest. The The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 is of Cutter, Clan Chief, the son of a famous warchief-Bearclaw. In the stories of their tribe it is said the Elves came from the stars and The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 from the High Ones. Cutter wants to leave the verdant tribal lands and go looking for the High Ones. But, first, they must survive the feral human clans that war with them. As the story progresses we see the Elves go on a epic journey to discover the High Ones. This journey takes them through many lands and they meet other elves each of which is vastly different due to evolution over time-The Sunfolk, the Gliders, the Go Backsother humans, trolls The Complete Elfquest: Volume 1 faeries. I won't spoil this story any more- that's why you read this. I won't deprive you of this story. • Doctor Strange Comics As Post-Fantasy
Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Karen Swenson, Chair Nancy A. Metz Katrina M. Powell April 15, 2019 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Fantasy, Comics Studies, Postmodernism, Post-Fantasy Copyright 2019, Jessie L. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts.

  • The International Elfquest Fan Club Handbook, a Guide That Will, We Hope, Answer Your Questions About the General Workings of the Club
THE INTERNATIONAL ELFQUEST FAN CLUB HANDBOOK 1 ✧ WELCOME TO THE HANDBOOK by Richard Pini You are holding in your hands (if you’ve printed this out) or reading (on your monitor screen) the International Elfquest Fan Club Handbook, a guide that will, we hope, answer your questions about the general workings of the Club. It contains material which originally appeared in the Lodestone, the newsletter of the previous incarnation of the Elfquest Fan Club, as well as information gleaned from your questions and comments over the last twenty years plus. In preparing this handbook, I’ve drawn heavily on earlier editions from the earlier Club; that information worked well then and I have every hope that it will work well now. I have tried to anticipate the kinds of things you might like to know about — like choosing your own elf-name, getting involved with or starting a local Holt, and so on. What I have not done is to try to answer all the questions members ask about the story of Elfquest itself, about things that have happened in the past or might happen in the future. Since Wendy and I began the Elfquest saga, the number of stories and characters has grown beyond our wildest imaginings; there’ve been tales told from the beginnings of the Wolfriders all the way through the future of the World of Two Moons (called in those times, Abode). Warp Graphics has published (or overseen the publication of) dozens of issues of various Elfquest comics, a revised (and thick!) edition of the Elfquest Gatherum, a Wolfrider’s Guide, several paperback novelizations and short story anthologies..

Sample file MAGISTER'S MISCELLANY Of old, the mouths of Mystra made known to all who have Power, this: that by the blessing of the goddess, one mage shall be the Lady’s champion, and master of magery. This one, called the Magister, does not rule, but rather wanders the Realms doing as desired, for good or ill; and in time is cast down by other mages, and the mouths of Mystra shall name a new Magister. Thus the Art shall live and grow, in strife and mystery, and never know the stifling yoke of law nor of authority. And the Art shall grow stronger, for magely ambition grows with skill-in-art, and those waxing stronger will seek out incumbent weakness; from strife-of-art shall come greater strength. In the proper choosing of an enemy, each Magister brings glory, and greater strength, to the office. And in the seeking of that office, each magic brings glory, and greater strength, to the Art. —Albaerum, Sage of Neverwinter INTRODUCTION n 1988, TSR published The Magister - A Sourcebook For The Forgotten Realms.
