KENNEDY MEMORIAL AWARD FOR TEACHING ACHIEVEMENT Thomas E. Pisarri, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Biomedical Sciences Creighton University Presented by John McCoy President, Creighton Students Union Each year, exemplary Creighton University professors are nominated for the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement, sponsored by the Creighton Students Union representing all nine schools and colleges. Nominees are highly competent in their fields, interesting and effective teachers and demonstrate concern for their students. The 2014 recipient is Dr. Thomas E. Pisarri, assistant professor of biomedical sciences in the School of Medicine. Dr. Pisarri has been an assistant professor at Creighton University since 1993. He has served as a volunteer abroad with the United Nations and completed post-doctoral training in physiology. In his 20-year tenure, he has instructed over 20 courses in physiology to medical, graduate, nursing and undergraduate students, as well as physicians in the University’s medical education program. He mentors and advises graduate students and has served on over 40 University committees. Dr. Pisarri serves on the editorial boards of major medical publications and reviews submissions for numerous academic journals. His research centers on control of blood flow to airways of the lungs and mechanisms by which airways are protected against the entry of foreign materials. His door is always open to students who need mentoring or assistance in mastering course content. His students are inspired to go beyond reading the textbook and attending lectures, and they often find themselves applying what he teaches them in other courses and situations. He is generous with his time and students know that he is genuinely interested in them and their success. For his humble and selfless service to Creighton University and its students, the Creighton Students Union is honored to recognize Dr. Thomas E. Pisarri of the School of Medicine as the 2014 recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement. 5 PRESENTATION OF THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION Lasting Hope Recovery Center Sheree L. Keely, LCSW Vice President Behavioral Services Alegent Creighton Health Presented by Thomas Svolos, M.D. Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry Ten years ago, Omaha was facing a crisis in psychiatric care. Two inpatient psychiatric facilities had closed, leaving people who needed inpatient psychiatric services with nowhere to go. They ended up in emergency rooms, hospitals, jails and on the streets. Two civic leaders, Creighton University trustees, Ken Stinson and Howard Hawks, along with their wives Ann Stinson and Rhonda Hawks, made a commitment to address this crisis. They brought together community providers, academics, community leaders, government agencies, the state legislature and patients to develop a collaborative response to this crisis, part of which was a fundraising drive that raised $25 million to build Lasting Hope Recovery Center. At Lasting Hope Recovery Center, a 64-bed adult psychiatric facility in Omaha, patients experiencing mental illness and substance abuse disorders receive high quality diagnosis and treatment. Their families have access to expertise and support in a welcoming and caring environment. It is an entry point for a continuum of care that is less intensive, more nurturing and more cost-effective in returning patients to productive lives. The center is operated by Alegent Creighton Health. In addition to providing quality care, it is a critical teaching and service component of the Creighton University health sciences schools, offering team-based, interprofessional training for health sciences students and psychiatric residents. Lasting Hope is a refuge for those in mental crisis, whether they come in off the street, through the law enforcement system or physician referral. In the warm, private rooms and bright, airy courtyards, patients are treated with compassion and encouraged to engage with one another. Broken spirits are healed, and hope becomes a pathway to recovery. Creighton University salutes the mission of the Lasting Hope Recovery Center and the commitment upon which it was founded. 6 CANDIDATES FOR EARNED DEGREES COLLEGE OF NURSING Brianna Nicole Burton Kiera K.
