Sitting in my favorite chair, I was able to vision that I was actually at the Expo. I learned much about the event that I didn't know before reading the book. Anyone interested in fairs will find this a great read.Ed Limbach 2011 Bronze Medal ndash; Independent Publisher Book Awards/Great Lakes RegionA walk down memory lane In the summers of 1936 and 1937 the Great Lakes Exposition was presented in Cleveland, Ohio, along the Lake Erie shore just north of the downtown business area. At the time, Cleveland was Americarsquo;s sixth largest city. The Exposition was scheduled to commemorate the centennial of Clevelandrsquo;s incorporation and was conceived as a way to energize a city hit hard by the Great Depression. In its first summer the Exposition drew four million visitors and three million more during its second and final season. The main entrance of the Exposition was on the cityrsquo;s recently finished civic mall between St. Clair and Lakeside avenues, two of Clevelandrsquo;s major thoroughfares. A bridge led from there to the 135-acre Exposition site on grounds that now house Clevelandrsquo;s Great Lakes Science Center, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Burke Lakefront Airport. Attractions included ldquo;Streets of the World,rdquo; featuring cafes and bazaars reminiscent of the countries they represented; a midway with rides and sideshows; a Court of Presidents; a Hall of Progress; a Marine Theater; horticultural gardens; and concerts by the bands of Wayne King, Xavier Cugat, Ted Weems, and Bob Crosby. When it reopened in the summer of 1937, the Exposition had a new attraction: a floating stage that featured Billy Rosersquo;s Aquacade, a music, dance, and swimming show starring Olympians Johnny Weissmuller and Eleanor Holm. The Aquacade later traveled to New York City for the 1939 Worldrsquo;s Fair. Meet Me on Lake Erie, Dearie! is the fourth installment in the Cleveland Theater Series by John Vacha and will appeal to those who attended the Exposition or listened to the stories told by their relatives about the two exciting summers during the Depression. Regional history students and social historians will also find this an informative and entertaining addition to their collections.     WHAT REMAINS HISTORY AND LOCATIONS OF WORLD FAIRS This is a chronological list of exhibitions and fairs held throughout the world that gained international attention. A few regional fairs are included if they were significant to the author or for showcasing emerging technology. This list is a compilation from various sources, trying to respect the capitalization traditions from the countries of origin. When controversy arises about the date or name of a fair (should the 1849 fair held in Birmingham, United Kingdom be referred to as “Exhibition of Industrial Arts and Manufacturers” or “Exposition of British Society”) a choice has been made so the checklist remains an index of fairs. Brown text indicates that the fair occurred before the Bureau international des expositions (BIE) on November 22, 1928 or was not sanctioned by them. Black began his career with the Ford Motor Company in January 1919 as the editor of the Dearborn Independent and remained with the paper until its demise in 1927. He then became the head of the Ford Motor Company Advertising Department where he reported to and worked closely with Ford’s president Edsel Ford. In the depression year of 1933 most Ford advertising ceased and Edsel asked Black to organize the Ford exhibit at the 1934-35 Chicago World’s Fair, called “A Century of Progress.” Ford Motor Company, like most other large American companies, took part in annual regional expositions throughout the United States to promote the industrial age, and the benefits Americans received from the manufacturing giants.

    Northern District of Ohio Cleveland Division The United States District Ashtabula Court for the Northern Lake Euclid Cleveland District of Ohio holds Lorain Cleveland Heights Lakewood Cuyahoga Geaugav Parma court in Cleveland, Elyria Akron, Toledo, and Youngstown. These Lorain Medina courts collectively serve citizens of the Ashland Crawford 40 most northern counties in Ohio. Richland The Cleveland Division serves nine counties: Ashland, Ashtabula, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, and Richland. Jurors in the venue are randomly selected from a voter registration database that is maintained by the Secretary of State. Jurors sit in juries of six to twelve members according to the discretion of the presiding judge. Cleveland was settled in 1796 by General Moses Cleveland during his search for a location for the Connecticut Western Reserve. Initially, the harsh weather and landscape did not entice many settlers to locate to the area in the early years; however, but once the Ohio and Erie Canal was finished in 1832, the city began to grow rapidly. Now that the city served as a fundamental connector between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes, it transitioned to a manufacturing and business center for the region. Cleveland was a destination for the iron and coal being mined in the area and continued to grow as a manufacturing hub throughout the early 20th century. Automobile manufacturing was especially booming and included companies such as Peerless, Chandler, Winton, and Baker. In 1920, the city grew to become the nation’s fifth largest city, due in large part to its economic prosperity. After the Great Depression, Cleveland hosted the Great Lakes Exposition as a way to revitalize the area, and the city continued to experience growth and prosperity through World War II.
