Abstract of Thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2000 Department of English, University of Toronto The Rhetoric of the Saints in Middle English Biblical Dnma by Chester N. Scovilie Much past criticism of character in Middle English drarna has fallen into one of two rougtily defined positions: either that early drama was to be valued as an example of burgeoning realism as dernonstrated by its villains and rascals, or that it was didactic and stylized, meant primarily to teach doctrine to the faithfùl. -
“All Chalked Up” Chalked “All View from the ROCK
Slippery University Rock Magazine Fall 2016 “All chalked up” View from the ROCK Dear Friends, I love this time of year when warm evenings melt into cool nights, and the aroma of autumn is in the air; but it’s also hard to say goodbye to summer. The summer of 2016 will be remembered as one of the busiest construction seasons on record at Slippery Rock University. Jackhammers, excavators and demolition crews were a common sight as crews worked diligently to renovate academic buildings, athletic fields and residence halls prior to the start of the fall semester. All of the work was scheduled with an eye toward modernizing academic learning environments and improving the appearance and function of buildings and campus. By the time classes resumed Aug. 29, $6.5 million in improvements had been completed. Major projects included a new entryway for Rhoads Hall; the demolition and reconstruction of the south wall at Spotts World Culture Building; the removal and resurfacing of the outdoor track at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium; and a pair of projects at Morrow Field House that included refinishing the basketball/ volleyball court and a roof replacement. In a continuing effort to extend our commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, we converted more than 70 single- occupancy restrooms to all-gender restrooms. We also FALL 2016 Volume 18, Number 3 launched the Physician Assistant Program; opened the renovated Harrisville building and welcomed the Pokémon craze to campus. We were honored this summer to receive a number of In this issue national, regional and state awards for academic quality, value and sustainability among others. -

Devilish Echoes: Goethe's Faust and Its Modern American Interpretations
Devilish Echoes: Goethe’s Faust and Its Modern American Interpretations By Caleb Miller Of all the devilish motifs that are propagated in America, none may be as sinister as the devil’s familiar. My first encounter with this idea was from the Grateful Dead, and their 1970 studio version of “Friend of the Devil”: Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me 20 bills… I ran down to the levee, but the devil caught me there, Took my 20 dollar bill and he vanished in the air. (The Grateful Dead) The condemned folk hero is nothing new to art, or even popular culture. In 1808, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe produced one of the most well-known works of German stage: Faust: The Tragedy Part One (Ramm). Considered an integral part of the German “Classics”, Faust by definition carries a mythological background, one that is rooted in alchemy and the truth. It’s author, Goethe, also came to fruition as an artist during the “Sturm und Drang1” period of German art and philosophy, which turned the inquisitiveness of the Enlightenment on its head and attacked everything man had created to remove himself from the natural essence of being (Pausch 39). In order to unify these different motifs and storylines in Faust, Goethe added another piece to the myth: Gretchen, the pure and devout object of Faust’s infernal desires (Ramm). The story, as told by Goethe, begins in heaven, where God and Mephistopholes strike a deal that allows Mephistopholes to tempt Faust with his wanton desires (von Goethe 15). Dr. 1 “Storm and Stress” Faust is a cynical and dying genius who has devoted his life prior to the story to science and philosophy. -

Like so many well-entrenched, traditional as- sumptions, this one is unwarranted. J. Evetts Haley, in editing one of the extremely rare accounts of the cattle drives to Califor- nia which preceded the Texas-to-Kansas experiment by a decade and a half, slapped the blame for this misunderstanding squarely on the writings of Emerson Hough. -

Twisted Trails of the Wold West by Matthew Baugh © 2006
Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable. -

CANADIAN PRIVATE COPYING COLLECTIVE SOCIÉTÉ CANADIENNE DE PERCEPTION DE LA COPIE PRIVÉE 150 Eglinton Ave. East, Suite 403 Toronto, Ontario M4P 1E8 416 486 6832 1 800 892 7235 416 486 3064 [FAX] www.cpcc.ca CPCC CPCC C-32 Submission Background The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) is the non-profit organization responsible for collecting private copying royalties and distributing them to songwriters, performers, music publishers and record companies, as well as promoting the interests of rights holders as they pertain to private copying. For over a decade, the CPCC has represented copyright holders before the Copyright Board of Canada. The Board establishes the levies that may be collected after trial-like hearings where experts, representing music rights holders and organizations that represent consumers and businesses that sell leviable blank media, present evidence and are cross-examined. The private copying levy has been an important part of the Canadian copyright regime since 1999, when the first private copying tariff was certified by the Copyright Board, following amendments made to the Copyright Act (the “Act”) in 1997 to allow for a levy to be placed on blank audio recording media. Currently, the levy only applies to blank CDs and MiniDiscs, at a rate of 29 cents per unit, and is paid by manufacturers and importers of these blank media to the CPCC for distribution to rights holders. The private copying levy has provided an effective mechanism whereby consumers are allowed to make copies of music for their personal use without infringing copyright and, in exchange, music creators receive royalties that recognize the value of private copies of their work. -
