2 from the chair

I would firstly like to congratulate and thank all those involved in bringing the wine show to fruition for its 14th year. It takes a whole years work to find and get commitment from Judges, International Judges whose schedules are increasingly busy, securing sponsors, as well as organising venues; glasses; helpers; websites etc etc. It is a big logistics exercise to bring this all together for the wine show week. Grape growing and winemaking in our area currently faces a number of challenges. The Water Allocation plan has been signed off by the minister and we expect to see our volumetric licences next year. This has been a 10 year period of negotiation and representation by the LCGWC water sub committee. We have set up a Fracking sub committee, which is, with the water group, looking at the Wine Industry response to proposals to use fracking in the Limestone Coast as part of unconventional shale gas extraction. Paramount in our position is the protection of our water allocations and water quality. The maintenance of our “clean food and wine from a clean green environment” image and also protection of the Limestone Coast’s $290 million dollar tourist industry. The LCGWC Tech sub-committee continues to apply for funds and fund research, including on going Eutypa work, due to increasing issues of vine decline in our regions, as well as a series of seminars and workshops , including Measurable Flavours in Wine, Benchmark tastings of the major varieties in our regions, The Climate Adaptation Seminar due 11 November and ongoing weather and soil moisture measurement trials using new sensor technology. All of these activities require a lot of volunteer work by many people, however they also require levies funds to run the accounts, insurances, audits, websites and other mandatory requirements for our organisation. Despite the difficult economic environment we are in, I would urge you all to continue to support the above work and the wineshow by maintaining membership of your regional bodies including the LCGWC levy. I would like to acknowledge the contribution to our wine community made by some of our members who have passed away in the last year. Eric Brand the first Patron of Coonawarra, Pete Wehl who with father Bill set up and ran the first vineyard in Mount Benson, and Mark Williams grapegrower in Coonawarra and who operated with his family Williams transport. Lastly I would like to thank Brendan Provis for stepping up to the plate and doing a second term as Chairman over the last year. This was greatly appreciated.

Pete Bissell Chairman Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council

5 Wine Show ‘14’ THE trophies

The Bill Redman Trophy for the Best Wine of Show Bill Redman is considered to be one of the pioneers for the region’s wine industry. His first vintage was at John Riddoch’s winery in Coonawarra in 1901 and he was appointed head cellar person at the age of 19 and learnt the craft of winemaking from Ewen Fergusson McBain.

In 1909 Redman entered into an agreement with Douglas A Tolley to make wine from the Redman family vineyard in hogsheads supplied by Tolley. This arrangement continued for 10 years with most of the wine being exported to Britain. Bill Redman subsequently made wine in bulk primarily for Woodley Wines until the 1950’s, The wine was said to be a lighter bodied ‘claret’ style aged in large casks for at least 2 years. Bill oversaw all the winemaking in Coonawarra from 1946 to 1951.

In the early 1950’s Bill started to supply wine to several wines companies such as Hardy, Yalumba, Leo Buring, Woodley and Chateau Reynella.

In 1952 Bill established Rouge Homme and the first wine to appear under his own label was the 1953 Rouge Homme Claret. Bill retired in 1954 however he remained involved with Rouge Homme until its sale in 1965 and subsequently Redman Wines until his death in 1979.

The Arthur Hoffmann Trophy for ViticulturAList of Best Wine of Show Arthur Hoffmann had a long association with the region’s wine industry; principally in viticulture, although he did work the still in the early days of Chateau Comaum. Arthur Hoffmann’s viticultural training was hands on. His skill in the vineyard was learned from his work in Coonawarra vineyards, primarily the Stentiford and Johnson vineyards along with his family’s vineyards, also in Coonawarra.

Even though the government of the day in the 1930s was offering subsidy to pull vines and encouraging dairy farming, Arthur continued to grow grapes and sold his fruit to Bill Redman who said the great wines of Rouge Homme came from Hoffman vineyards. In 1965 Arthur sold his 60-year-old Shiraz block to the fledgling Redman Wines and he continued his association with the Redmans in the vineyard and cellar door until his retirement in 1990 aged 87. Arthur Hoffmann passed away in 1994.

6 The David Wynn Trophy for the Best Red Wine of the Show It is evident David Wynn saw that it was not enough just to make great wine, but that a concerted marketing effort would be required for Australians to accept table wines as part of their lives.

David’s father, Samuel Wynn, was a successful Melbourne wine merchant and was familiar with the attributes of Coonawarra. However when the opportunity arose to purchase Chateau Comaum (the old Riddoch winery) and vineyards, Samuel was not convinced it would be a good viticultural investment, largely due to a report indicating the property would be unviable for wine production. David was not as cautious as his father and courageously went ahead with the purchase.

Securing the help of Ian Hickinbotham, Wynn’s main aim was to combine the wines produced with “an advertising campaign in Melbourne to make Coonawarra famous. People when thinking of Claret, would then think of Coonawarra”. What ensued was the distinctive branding of Wynns Coonawarra Estate and its position in the market as one of the first quality wines of Australia.

Whilst Wynns Coonawarra Estate was positioned at the connoisseur end of the market and it is thought he was the first wine producer to promote wine and food combinations with recipe neck tags, David Wynn was also visionary in ensuring everyday Australians could have access to good quality and affordable table wines. This came about by Wynn introducing the first wine flagon in Australia and the pioneering of the wine cask.

After the sale of Wynns, David went on to establish with his son Adam, Mountadam Wines in the high Eden Valley, which was one of Australia’s pioneers in production and again focussing on the upper end of the market.

David Wynn’s achievements were acknowledged with the receipt the 1993 Maurice O’Shea Award for outstanding contribution to the Australian Wine Industry.

7 Wine Show ‘14’

The Colin Kidd Trophy for Best White Wine of Show

Colin Kidd was born in Renmark in 1925, and spent much of his early years on the family fruit-growing property. He served in the RAAF during WW2, and returned to private fruit growing until 1965 when the government acquired the family farm for the Chowilla Dam project.

Colin and his family arrived in Coonawarra soon after that to take over from Philip Laffer at Rouge Homme and to continue Lindemans Vineyard Developments at Coonawarra and Padthaway. He was to preside over the 1968 to 1972 Rouge Homme Winery Vintages in addition to managing the company vineyards. Colin later became responsible nationally for Lindemans Vineyard Operations.

During his period in the Limestone Coast Colin presided over key developments including the Lindemans St. George and Limestone Ridge Vineyards, developing the Lindemans Padthaway Vineyards just a year behind Karl Seppelts’ pioneering vineyard at Keppoch, and developing a small pilot vineyard of four wine grape varieties at Mt Benson in 1980.

Colin was an instigator in bringing the Coonawarra and Limestone Coast Wine Industries together through various forums and projects of the time, including the South East Viticultural Council (since renamed the Limestone Coast Grape & Wine Council), the Coonawarra Airfield Company, with its land acquisition and development of the McGillivray Airstrip and the introduction of such Coonawarra institutions such as ‘Bottle Nights’ and the local Beefsteak and Burgundy Clubs.

Colin had built his home in Penola and continued his involvement with the Wine Industry and other community interests since his retirement from Lindemans in 1990, and he has more recently retired to Adelaide to remain closer to his family.

8 The H.R. (Ron) Haselgrove Trophy for Best Cabernet of Show

Harry Ronald (known as Ron) Haselgrove was born at Unley, South Australia on 23rd April 1900. He was educated at Unley High School and Roseworthy Agricultural College, from where he graduated in 1919. Ron went on to do a wool-classing course and spent six months working on the wool floor at Bagot, Shakes and Lewis at Port Adelaide. He returned to Roseworthy in 1920 as temporary Acting Analytical Chemist. The following year he did his first vintage at Renmark Growers Distillery, Renmark under the direction of Leo Buring.

From 1922 to 1924 Ron studied at L’Ecole Nationale d’Agriculture at Montpellier. On his return to Australia he joined Angoves Ltd, winemakers and distillers at Renmark and Tea Tree Gully. Ron worked for the Angove family until 1938. In 1934, while still at Angoves, Ron became technical advisor for Mildara Wines at Merbein, Victoria, and four years later left Angoves to become Managing Director of Mildara wines. Over the ensuing decade, Ron effectively turned around the fortunes of the struggling winemaker.

In the early 1950’s. Ron turned his attention to the production of ‘claret’ style wines and for this purchased grapes from the (then) little known Coonawarra district of South Australia. In 1955 Mildara purchased land at Coonawarra and developed 370 hectares of vineyards.

From his overseas travels throughout the noted wine regions of France, particularly Bordeaux, Ron was strongly influenced by the use of different forms of oak in the maturation of wines and spent the following years in collaboration with a number of cooperages introducing various oak vessels and styles to his wines. One of the most influential of these being the production of the 1963 Mildara Cabernet, better known as “Peppermint Pattie” which was matured in new oak hogsheads instead of the 5000 gallon vats typical of the time.

Ron served as President of the Australian Wine and Brandy Association (1954-1957), and as member of the Australian Wine Board (1936-1969), President of the Victorian Wine and Brandy Producers’ Association (1954-1957). He played an important role in the establishment of the Australian Wine Research Institute and served on its council for 18 years (1955-1973).

His vision and winemaking skill made Ron one of Coonawarra’s modern pioneers of winemaking and he was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1964 in recognition of his contribution to the Australian wine industry. He retired from Mildara Wines in July 1971.

9 Wine Show ‘14’

Karl Seppelt Trophy for the Best Wine in Classes 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 18

Karl Seppelt is a third generation member of the Seppelt family who are a long established Australian winemaking dynasty which originated in the Barossa in the 1850’s. In the early 1960’s Karl travelled overseas visiting many of the old world wine growing regions. It became “obvious” to him that for the Australian wine industry to progress beyond a predominately fortified wine producer, new regions suitable for premium table wine production needed to be found.

He sought out Government and private information on agricultural land that he considered might be suitable for this type of endeavour. Armed with this knowledge and further intelligence garnered from sending his vineyard manager Ossy Leske on a “holiday” to get local knowledge, Seppelt purchased land in Padthaway and Drumborg. In 1963/64 Drumborg was planted with Riesling and Padthaway with Shiraz and .

Over the past 40 years Drumborg has proven to be a quality producer of European style Riesling, and Padthaway has excelled with several varieties over its brief history. These include Riesling in the 1970’s, Chardonnay in the 1980’s and 1990’s and more recently Shiraz. Another aspect of Karl’s vision was the establishment of Chardonnay and in the late 1970’s, the Barooga Vinyard was the largest single Chardonnay vineyard in Australia.

Karl Seppelt as company viticulturist continued the expansion of vineyards in Padthaway into the 1980’s with the purchase of a neighbouring property for wine grape growing. He left the Seppelt company in 1985 to further pursue his wine growing vision at his Grand Cru Estate in the Eden Valley region, he is also an active contributor to the Australian Wine Industry through his involvement with the Adelaide wine show and other wine industry organisations.

The original name for the Padthaway region, “Keppoch” coined by Seppelt is no longer in use; however the legacy of Karl Seppelt’s vision of Padthaway as a winegrowing region lives on through the many superb and diverse wines produced in the area.

10 The Ewen Fergusson McBain Trophy for Best Museum Wine in Classes 34 & 35

Ewen Fergusson McBain was educated at Roseworthy Agricultural College where he spent six and a half years, winning the Roseworthy gold medal (Dux of his year). Upon graduation he undertook work with various government agricultural experimental stations and became assistant government viticulturalist and superintendent of experimental blocks in the South East and after two years was appointed assistant to Professor Perkins of Roseworthy College.

Professor Perkins had been advising John Riddoch on the establishment of the Yallum Fruit Colony and recommended McBain to Riddoch who selected him as his first winemaker for the Riddoch cellars.

In 1898 he took up the position as manager of Yallum Park Fruit Colony where the sixty acres of vines received his skillful attention and he commenced making wine in the partially completed cellars of John Riddoch winery (now known as Wynns Coonawarra Estate). During his time as manager he oversaw the completion of the cellars and the installation of a pot still to make brandy, as well as the training of young Bill Redman, who took over winemaking in 1908. Ewen Fergusson McBain was said to have been meticulous and insisted on absolute cleanliness in the winery.

He remained at the fruit colony and winery manager until circa 1907. He owned several blocks and a large holding of land at Comaum and he remained in the region until 1922 until ill health led him to move to Adelaide.

Ewen Fergusson McBain brought to Coonawarra the best science and up to date knowledge of the day for the establishment of this new region.
