It takes a whole years work to find and get commitment from Judges, International Judges whose schedules are increasingly busy, securing sponsors, as well as organising venues; glasses; helpers; websites etc etc. It is a big logistics exercise to bring this all together for the wine show week. Grape growing and winemaking in our area currently faces a number of challenges. The Water Allocation plan has been signed off by the minister and we expect to see our volumetric licences next year. This has been a 10 year period of negotiation and representation by the LCGWC water sub committee. We have set up a Fracking sub committee, which is, with the water group, looking at the Wine Industry response to proposals to use fracking in the Limestone Coast as part of unconventional shale gas extraction. Paramount in our position is the protection of our water allocations and water quality. The maintenance of our “clean food and wine from a clean green environment” image and also protection of the Limestone Coast’s $290 million dollar tourist industry. The LCGWC Tech sub-committee continues to apply for funds and fund research, including on going Eutypa work, due to increasing issues of vine decline in our regions, as well as a series of seminars and workshops , including Measurable Flavours in Wine, Benchmark tastings of the major varieties in our regions, The Climate Adaptation Seminar due 11 November and ongoing weather and soil moisture measurement trials using new sensor technology. All of these activities require a lot of volunteer work by many people, however they also require levies funds to run the accounts, insurances, audits, websites and other mandatory requirements for our organisation. Despite the difficult economic environment we are in, I would urge you all to continue to support the above work and the wineshow by maintaining membership of your regional bodies including the LCGWC levy. I would like to acknowledge the contribution to our wine community made by some of our members who have passed away in the last year. Eric Brand the first Patron of Coonawarra, Pete Wehl who with father Bill set up and ran the first vineyard in Mount Benson, and Mark Williams grapegrower in Coonawarra and who operated with his family Williams transport. Lastly I would like to thank Brendan Provis for stepping up to the plate and doing a second term as Chairman over the last year. This was greatly appreciated.
