Australia Day Tasting 2018 Wine Australia for Australian Wine Australia Day Tasting 2018 23 January • London #ADTwine Welcome to Australia Day Tasting 2018 Welcome to our Australia Day Tasting. We are delighted to return to B1, Victoria House again, to host what has become one of the largest tastings in the UK calendar, and it keeps on growing, with more wines, exhibitors and winemakers. The landscape of Australian wine has never looked more exciting, with over 60 regions producing innovative, compelling and diverse wines. With a geographical size similar to Europe, and with equally distinct climates, soils and terroirs, it is no surprize that Australia produces a wide array of styles, flavours and grape varieties. Today we have over 1000 wines available to taste, from 41 different regions across Australia. We hope you enjoy making new discoveries as well as trying the latest vintages of old favourites. It is encouraging to see the interest in premium Australia from across the market as the UK as a total retains its number one position in terms of volume of imports from Australia. Australia continues to be the most popular country of origin in the off-trade, with 23% market share. The market growth at price points over £6.00 per bottle is reflected by the value of bottle imports overtaking that of bulk for the first time since 2012. The 2017 vintage in Australia was up by 5% on the previous year, producing 1.93M tonnes and increasing the purchase price of grapes by 7%, reflecting the increased demand from the world markets. China is now the largest destination by value, with over 30% of exports, followed by the USA with 19% and the UK with 14%. Red production increased by 12%, while whites were in slight decline driven mainly by Chardonnay. In addition to the many wines available at the exhibitor tasting, we have our focus table tasting on classic and iconic Australian wines to remind you of some of the heroes of the regions. We also have two focus rooms, showcasing the 50 best wine as chosen by independent wine merchants as well as 60 of the gold medal and trophy winners from the IWC, IWSC and DWWA competitions last year. We are also delighted to welcome the Australian Wine Research Institute who will be presenting a master class on the rotundone compound found in Shiraz, alongside master classes from the Margaret River and McLaren Vale regions. Please share your discoveries with us and your fellow tasters. Join the online conversation with the hashtag #ADTwine. We’ll be tweeting from @Wine_Australia and on Instagram from @wineaustralia. The Wine Australia team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and we are joined today by our CEO, Andreas Clark and General Manager, Stuart Barclay. We hope you enjoy the event. • In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie.

  • Hall of Fame Initiative and I Congratulate the Names Below for Making This Imperial Grade
100 Best Australian Wines 2011 matthewjukes.com tastingnotes Welcome to the 100 Best Australian Wines list for 2011. As always, this century of greats is the result of exhaustive tastings over the last twelve months and it represents the finest one hundred Australian wines available on the shelves in the UK this year. 2011 sees the evolution of my Hall of Fame initiative and I congratulate the names below for making this imperial grade. Firstly, these twelve magnificent producers have been the most consistent wineries in the 100 Best Australian Wines list since its inception in 2004, being included in every single list and they are to be applauded. DE BORTOLI, FOX GORDON, JACOB’S CREEK, MCWILLIAM’S, MITOLO, PENFOLDS, PETER LEHMANN, ST HALLETT, THE LANE VINEYARD, TYRRELL’S, WIRRA WIRRA, YALUMBA In addition, the concluding eleven members of the Hall of Fame have made it into all bar one of the 100s and they are: CHAPEL HILL, CULLEN, GROSSET, HARDY’S, JANSZ, KNAPPSTEIN, LEEUWIN, MAJELLA, MOSS WOOD, MOUNT HORROCKS, STONIER It is fascinating to see that boutique operators rub shoulders with giants and while large portfolios like Penfolds have notched up a massive 29 wines over the years, with De Bortoli (24), Yalumba (23) and Peter Lehmann (21) there are also a few notable names like Jim Barry (13), Tim Adams (13), Petaluma (12) and Tamar Ridge (10) who have missed out on two years of lists and so narrowly miss receiving the HoF accolade, but still have performed at a massive run rate more recently. So twenty-three estates gain Hall of Fame status (between them hauling 40/100 spots in this year’s list!) and their portfolios of wines, along with this year’s 100 Best, will be used as the vanguard of my continued push to celebrate and educate the world about fine Australian wine.
