Wine Australia for Australian Wine Australia Day Tasting 2018 23 January • London #ADTwine Welcome to Australia Day Tasting 2018 Welcome to our Australia Day Tasting. We are delighted to return to B1, Victoria House again, to host what has become one of the largest tastings in the UK calendar, and it keeps on growing, with more wines, exhibitors and winemakers. The landscape of Australian wine has never looked more exciting, with over 60 regions producing innovative, compelling and diverse wines. With a geographical size similar to Europe, and with equally distinct climates, soils and terroirs, it is no surprize that Australia produces a wide array of styles, flavours and grape varieties. Today we have over 1000 wines available to taste, from 41 different regions across Australia. We hope you enjoy making new discoveries as well as trying the latest vintages of old favourites. It is encouraging to see the interest in premium Australia from across the market as the UK as a total retains its number one position in terms of volume of imports from Australia. Australia continues to be the most popular country of origin in the off-trade, with 23% market share. The market growth at price points over £6.00 per bottle is reflected by the value of bottle imports overtaking that of bulk for the first time since 2012. The 2017 vintage in Australia was up by 5% on the previous year, producing 1.93M tonnes and increasing the purchase price of grapes by 7%, reflecting the increased demand from the world markets. China is now the largest destination by value, with over 30% of exports, followed by the USA with 19% and the UK with 14%. Red production increased by 12%, while whites were in slight decline driven mainly by Chardonnay. In addition to the many wines available at the exhibitor tasting, we have our focus table tasting on classic and iconic Australian wines to remind you of some of the heroes of the regions. We also have two focus rooms, showcasing the 50 best wine as chosen by independent wine merchants as well as 60 of the gold medal and trophy winners from the IWC, IWSC and DWWA competitions last year. We are also delighted to welcome the Australian Wine Research Institute who will be presenting a master class on the rotundone compound found in Shiraz, alongside master classes from the Margaret River and McLaren Vale regions. Please share your discoveries with us and your fellow tasters. Join the online conversation with the hashtag #ADTwine. We’ll be tweeting from @Wine_Australia and on Instagram from @wineaustralia. The Wine Australia team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and we are joined today by our CEO, Andreas Clark and General Manager, Stuart Barclay. We hope you enjoy the event. In 2007, the Australian Wine Research Institute identified The master classes are ticketed events with a guestlist. Any remaining places will ‘Rotundone’ as the cause of the famous black (or white) pepper character often be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. So if you are not on the guestlist associated with this variety. but would like to attend a session, please come along to the Ballroom prior to the master class and we will fit you in if we can. Con Simos, Group Manager at the AWRI, will lead this presentation into rotundone and will discuss what causes it and how viticulturists can influence its presence in wine. He will also provide some fascinating insights from the latest research into how this character plays an important role in the regional differences of Australian Shiraz, illustrated through tasting wines from a number of different regions with varying rotundone levels. 11am • Margaret River Chardonnay 3pm • McLaren Vale Shiraz Presented by Sarah Ahmed • The Wine Detective Presented by Jennifer Lynch • McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association General Manager Margaret River has just celebrated 50 years since the first commercial vineyard was planted in 1967 and wines coming from the region have never been more The pristine coastline of the Gulf of St Vincent and the rolling hillsides of the exciting.
