  • In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie.

  • The Next Generation of Australia's Leading Wine
THE NEXT GENERATION OF AUSTRALIA’S LEADING WINE GROUP HEADING TO TASMANIA FOR THE FIRST TIME ‘SUSTAINABILITY, INNOVATION AND RELATIONSHIPS’ IN FAMILY BUSINESS IS ON THE AGENDA PHOTO & INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE MEDIA RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 2017 Continuing their tradition of visiting some of Australia – and the world’s – greatest wine regions, the Next Generation of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW) are heading to Tasmania to continue their vinous education. This year’s trip follows their 2016 visit to New Zealand as guests of NZ’s leading wine group, the Family of Twelve. Australia’s First Families of Wine was established in 2009 to tell their tales, share their history and highlight the provenance behind some of Australia’s most iconic drops. Its twelve members represent over 1380 years of collaborative winemaking experience across 16 regions and 48 generations and remain proudly multi-generational and 100% family owned. Together they have shaped the Australian wine landscape over years of dedication, passion and commitment to the iconic vineyards they toil. Heading to Tasmania on Friday 24 November, the Next Gen as they are affectionately known, will be experiencing the best of Australian wine at the exhibitor tasting of the Hobart Wine Show before heading to MONA for an education of a different kind! Saturday will see the group leaving Hobart and heading to the stunning East Coast of Tasmania, visiting Brown Brothers’ vineyards and learning more about Tasmanian winemaking and sustainability practices from Brown Brothers’ local Viticulturist, Ben Fleer. And no visit is complete without experiencing the joys of Tasmanian produce, including local oysters and sparkling wine by the lagoon at Devil’s Corner, before they head to Launceston to host an event.

Yours to keep with our compliments. qantas First & business wines EDITOR’S LETTER Just as a youthful premium wine given time in the bottle can transform from something simple and straightforward into a far more significant, complex and intriguing drop, Qantas has, over nine decades, evolved from a modest operation known as the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services into one of the leading airlines of the world. So it seems fitting that in this edition of the Qantas Inflight Guide to Wine we honour the airline’s 90th year by showcasing Australian wines, winemakers and JUDY SARRIS Editor, wineries that display the same sort of Gourmet Traveller WINE. enduring excellence and, in some cases, have reached a similarly ripe old age. On the following pages you will meet families who have produced premium wines for generations and read about prominent vineyards that have been operating for more than 150 years. You will also meet the panel of experts who have selected the fine local wines you’ll be wm0609cover NoBarSpine.indd 1 11/11/2009 4:59:05 PM enjoying on your flight. Of course, weight and space restrictions prevent Qantas carrying every label in its cellar; instead, your cabin crew will offer a selection of wines to complement dishes crafted by world-renowned chef Neil Perry.
