Palavras-chave: rádio, DAB, internet, serviço público, Portugal Abstract There were no doubts about the success of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in the 90's. DAB seemed to be the obvious choice to replace the analogue broadcast in Europe.

  • Radio Mobility in the Digital Era: Interactivity, Participation and Content Share Possibilities in Iberian Broadcasters
Comunicação e Sociedade, vol. 28, 2015, pp. 291 – 308 doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.17231/comsoc.28(2015).2282 Radio mobility in the digital era: interactivity, participation and content share possibilities in Iberian broadcasters Teresa Piñeiro-Otero & Fábio Ribeiro Abstract In the context of the scientific research into radio, recent years have encouraged many theories about the meaning of a post-radio (Oliveira & Portela, 2011), thus enlisting several pa- rameters regarding the inclusion of contemporary radio in the digital and online environments. This digital migration has led to the development of mobile applications for radio, broadening the communicative potential of audiences (Aguado, Feijoo & Martínez, 2013), as well as pro- moting convergence of interactive content among listeners-users. Aware of this opportunity, the main broadcasters in Spain and Portugal have broadened their radiophonic scope to the mobile platform, especially geared towards smartphones through the development of mobile applica- tions, commonly known as apps (Cerezo, 2010). As a symbol of a culture in permanent changing, smartphones not only provide greater easiness in terms of access and interaction, but also af- ford larger opportunities for disseminating content among audiences, a phenomenon that some studies have labelled as user distributed content (Villi, 2012). This article presents an exploratory analysis of the current policies of the main Spanish and Portuguese radio broadcasters regarding mobile applications, evaluating the different levels of interaction and participation in these plat- forms. This observation led to the conclusion, among other findings, that the mobile platform represents a supplementary channel for traditional FM radio, rather than a new medium with its own language and expression.

Ph.D.odirzadeh, Ph.D.odirzadeh, Professor, Music A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON MUSICA POPULAR Joseph Medeiros, III San Francisco, California 2018 This thesis offers a multi-faceted understanding of Musica Popular, or Popular Portuguese Music, with perspectives ranging from the historical to personal, and conceptual. I take the position that three primary musical elements are responsible for the development of the Musica Popular sound - fado, folkloric, and marching band music. To demonstrate this, important artists and pieces within the genre are studied, along with a musical autoethnography of the production process of my own music, as a Musica Popular artist. This thesis concludes with a research model for popular music studies in general, and Musica Popular in particular, emphasizing hybridization as a force that appears to contribute to further development of this vital cultural music. I certify that the Abstract is a correct representation of the content of this thesis. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my parents/family for all the support they have given me throughout the years with my music.

  • Community Formation Among Recent Immigrant Groups in Porto, Portugal
Community Formation among Recent Immigrant Groups in Porto, Portugal By James Beard A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Stanley Brandes, Chair Professor Laura Nader Professor Alex Saragoza Summer 2017 Abstract Community Formation among Recent Immigrant Groups in Porto, Portugal by James Beard Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Stanley Brandes, Chair The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in migration to Europe, primarily by refugees fleeing conflict in the Middle East and Central Asia, but with significant flows of refugees and other migrants from North and sub-Saharan Africa as well. Portugal is not among the primary European destinations for refugees or immigrants; possibly, in part, because there are fewer migrants in Portugal, it is an E.U. country where new arrivals are still met with a degree of enthusiasm. Hard right, anti-immigrant parties—on the rise in other parts of the E.U.— have not gained much traction in Portugal. This work looks at the relative invisibility of immigrants in Porto, the country’s second largest city, which may make those immigrants a less visible target for intolerance and political opportunism, but may also impede a larger, more self- determinant role for immigrants and their communities in greater Portuguese society. A major contributing factor to immigrant invisibility is the absence (outside of Lisbon and southern Portugal) of neighborhoods where African immigrants are concentrated. In Porto, communities do not form around geography; instead, communities form around institutions.

Revista Lusófona de Estudos Culturais | Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies Vol. 1, n.1, pp. 206-223, 2013 PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING AND CULTURAL POLICY The Portuguese experience, 2002-2012 Augusto Santos Silva Universidade do Porto, Portugal Maria José Ribeiro Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Portugal Abstract: It is quite rare the assessment of public service broadcasting as an asset of cultural policy. However, there is a reasonable amount of elements that could feed a debate on this issue, be it political or academic. Considering the Portuguese experience between the years of 2002 and 2012, this paper examines the role of public service broadcasting as a cultural resource, and, specifically, its relevance for cultural public policy. This is an important area for empirical research, according to the standards of economics, sociology and communication sciences. And it implies the analysis of objective conditions, restrictions and possibilities of financial, legal and contractual contexts, and the consideration of the outputs and the impact of concrete broadcasting. Keywords: Culture; cultural policy; public media service. 1. The cultural relevance of public service media It is quite rare, in Portugal, the assessment of public service broadcasting as an asset of cultural policy. At the most, we can find impressionist approaches. However, there is a reasonable amount of elements that could feed a debate on this issue, be it political or academic. Some of these elements are the legal and contractual framework, indicators of activity and output or decisions and recommendations by independent regulators. This is indeed a very pertinent issue. On the one hand, radio and television are the most pervasive of mass media.

  • Sociolinguistic (Re)Constructions of Diaspora Portugueseness: Portuguese-Canadian Youth in Toronto
Sociolinguistic (re)constructions of diaspora portugueseness: Portuguese-Canadian youth in Toronto by Emanuel A. da Silva A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of French University of Toronto © Copyright by Emanuel A. da Silva (2011) Sociolinguistic (re)constructions of diaspora portugueseness: Portuguese-Canadian youth in Toronto Emanuel A. da Silva Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of French University of Toronto 2011 Abstract This dissertation demonstrates that notions of language and identity are not entirely about personal characteristics (what a person is born with, what is ―in his blood‖), nor are they entirely about agency (how a person chooses to present herself). Instead, they are largely about markets and about the multiple positionings of social actors within markets that are structured by ideologies of the nation state, immigration and the globalized new economy. This critical perspective challenges the normalized view that immigrant (diasporic) communities are simply natural social groupings or depoliticized transplantations of distinct ethnolinguistic units from their ―homeland‖. They are, like language and identity, carefully constructed and managed social projects that are shaped by forces from within and from without. In Canada, the conditions for the institutionalization and (re)production of ethnolinguistic differences, which also make and mark class relations, are strengthened by the state‘s multiculturalist policy. The Portuguese-Canadian community is one such ethnolinguistic market and the goal of this research is to examine which forms of portugueseness dominate the market, why and with what consequences for whom. Building from an ethnographic and critical sociolinguistic approach (Bourdieu 1977, Heller 2002), the qualitative data behind this research ii was produced through a two-year ethnography, participant observations and semi-structured interviews drawing primarily from six second-generation Portuguese-Canadians and members of their social networks.

  • The Acoustic Face of Culture
Revista Lusófona de Estudos Culturais / Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies, vol. 5, n. 1, 2018, pp. 191 – 208 Musicality of Portuguese: introduction to a sonority and phonetic acoustic in the Lusophone world Teresa Costa Alves Abstract The Portuguese language comprehends the space where Portuguese is spoken and under- stood as the mother tongue of communication between the people who inhabit it. It is a linguistic landscape that includes sounds as different as the diversity of the countries that make up this Lusophone space. The plurality of accents and musical genres – colonial product of a time that was not only history-related – reflects a range of sound possibilities in an attempt to synthesize an accoustic mediascape based on the Portuguese language. This space frets against both the ear and the representation of the Portuguese-speaking countries, and it consists of the main object of reflection of this article: the acoustic possibilities of Portuguese language and music to create phonetic particularities that distinguish the Portuguese speakers in a Portuguese-speaking world of about 300 million speakers.
