over Lesley Channell has been the warm- hearted and welcoming manager of Hayle Day Care Centre for twenty years. The centre has been running since 1982 and continues to grow and has become an integral part of the Hayle community. Over the years Lesley has welcomed more than a thousand new faces into the centre and has grown as fond of them as of family members. Tamsin Erikson has been working in tandem with Lesley since January and has already slotted in perfectly and is enjoying the experience of working with the wonderful clients and volunteers. Council Corner April and May 2018

Council Vacancy We still have a councillor vacancy for Hayle North. More information is on the council’s website. If you would like to get involved and take an active role in shaping the future of Hayle please contact the clerk, details below, to have an informal chat to find out what is involved. Electoral Boundary Changes (see back page for map) Changes to the electoral boundaries for Cornwall Councillors will be in place from 2021. The Local Government Boundary Commission has been undertaking a review of the divisional boundaries for and has decided that there should be 87 Cornwall Councillors from 2021. Nothing will change until then, but discussions by Cornwall Council and town and parish councils about how they would like to see the boundaries change have taken place over the last six months. Cornwall Council has decided to recommend that there should be two councillors to represent Hayle and Gwinear-Gwithian. Hayle Town Council has put forward a suggestion that there should be two divisions, one based on the existing Hayle South linked with Gwinear and the other the existing Hayle 5 North linked with Gwithian. This matches the two wards (now called divisions) of Hayle Town Council with the two wards of Gwinear- Gwithian Parish Council. Hayle Town Council has suggested that the demarcation should follow the railway line and the A30 to clearly define the divisions. Unfortunately, this was not accepted by Cornwall Council, who instead proposed that the division should be through Ventonleague, splitting Hayle in a most illogical and unsatisfactory way but not affecting any part of Gwinear- Gwithian. The Boundary Commission will now look at both proposals and come back for consultation on its preferred option which could be entirely different; it is expected that this will be in June 2018. The town council will have a few weeks to respond and may well seek public support for what it believes is the better option for everyone. Neighbourhood Plan The Inspector’s final report on the Neighbourhood Plan has just been received and no substantive changes have been made. There will be a referendum in the next month or two to decide whether or not the plan is adopted. Please look out for leaflets and information that will be coming through your letterbox confirming the arrangements. Hayle Town Council encourages you to vote! Neighbourhood Plan Goes To Referendum Our Plan has been approved by the Independent Inspector to go to a referendum of all registered voters in Hayle. The Steering Group is delighted that the Inspector required only a couple of minor amendments during the inspection process. The Final Plan is posted on our website: http:// np.hayle.net together with other documents. It is now up to Cornwall Council to set a date for the 8 referendum. Keep an eye on the local press and noticeboards or sign up to our email list at: http://np.hayle.net/ contact/. Once the referendum date has been announced, we will set dates for Open Days where you can come to learn more about the Neighbourhood Plan and its policies. Because of government regulations, neither the town council nor the Steering Group will be allowed to lobby you to vote in favour. We can, however, encourage you to vote – and a strong turnout will send a message to the Cornwall Council planners that Hayle is engaged in how their town develops. Here is a reminder of why Hayle Town Council wanted a Neighbourhood Plan:  To promote good design and protect the distinct character of the area  To ensure the right development happens in the right places  To improve traffic facilities and reduce congestion  To support local businesses and jobs  To protect our unique heritage  To protect green and open spaces  To get funding for local projects from developer contributions. [Developers must pay a Community Infrastructure Levy and the percentage of this that towns receive to use on local projects is 25% if there is an adopted Neighbourhood Plan or 15%, capped at £100, without.] 9 This is your plan and it will last until 2030. Please learn about it – and make sure you vote. John Bennett, Chairman, Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group Hayle Community Centre, 58 Queensway, Hayle, TR27 4NX [email protected], http://np.hayle.net

On Saturday, 14th April, Hayle Film Club will present a good old- fashioned weepie, FILM STARS DON'T DIE IN LIVERPOOL, with a bit of an ageist twist. Based on a true story, Annette Bening, in a career-best performance, stars as 1950s actress Gloria Grahame, who falls in love with Liverpudlian actor Peter Turner, 30 years her junior, played by the always wonderful Jamie Bell (who debuted as Billy Elliot way back in 2000). Later in the month, on Thursday 26th April, we will screen MY 12 PURE LAND, surely one of our most unusual and exciting films -- a modern-day feminist Western, in which three Pakistani women defend their land from 200 heavily armed men who seek to claim it as part of a family feud. (In Urdu, with English subtitles.) Visit our website after the 1st of May for information on our summer programme. All screenings take place upstairs at the Passmore Edwards Institute and begin promptly at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 per person (£4 for members; membership is just £7.50 per year). Book by phone (01736 600736) or online at www.haylefilmclub.org.uk. Free refreshments follow Saturday screenings. Tickets on the door subject to availability. All are welcome. Millpond Update

Ever since the Meteorological Office decided to move the first day of spring to St. David’s Day we have not been quite sure what to expect 20 and 2018 has no exception. Traditionally March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but this year it came in like a wolf “from Russia with love!” Blizzards swept across the South West. The last time I saw ice on the Swan Pool was in 2010 and the ducks which are still with us where looking decidedly puzzled by all this “White Stuff!” Fortunately it didn’t last long and now we are back to the normal sunshine and showers but the turtle’s basking log has been dislodged. I hope some kind person will put it back for them because they have grown to love it and basking helps to keep them healthy. At long last the Children’s Play Equipment is going back with a brand new play mat to keep the area clean. I hope that the council will return the blue duck and the seesaw for the smaller toddlers. This has always been a safe play area for the under tens in particular. We don’t want to see the younger children bullied to keep them off the new site as happens at the Recreation Ground which would be a great shame because they have had to wait over a year for their new play area. Most of our ducks have now moved up to Copperhouse to breed. The Gadwall have paid us their spring visit on their way to Iceland, the merlin has also wished us goodbye for another winter and most of the black-headed gulls will be back home in Wales. It is always sad to see them go, but we do have our thrushes, finches, blackcaps and blue tits and they will soon start nesting. We do have a few spring flowers along the 21

On St. Valentine’s Day we celebrated ‘Green Heart Day’. This is a Climate Coalition day to mark the impact of the changing climate. We wore hand- made green hearts to show our love of nature and to encourage action from Rope Walk. Some of the primroses, local decision makers to reduce lesser-celandines and bluebells pollution. You will find plenty of online advice if you wish to follow up on this. Our website has a wealth of information. I admit I did not venture far from home in the snow, so did not see the birds on Copperhouse Pool and how they were coping , but there are still plenty of them in residence as I write this. It’s always worth looking out for 22 the more unusual among the flocks, like avocet and pintail. Recently, dogs were seen chasing birds off Copperhouse Pool, which can cause the birds to use precious energy, threatening their survival. It is a criminal offence to scare the birds on the nature reserve. Our wonderful team of litter pickers recently removed seven bags of rubbish from Copperhouse. The next litter pick will be run by Surfers Against Sewage and will be at Carnsew Pool in April. See our website for details. www.rspb.org.uk

23 Letter to the Editor Once again many thanks for my copy of the Hayle Pump. Firstly I expect I am one of the oldest visitors to your town, coming as a baby in 1931 to stay with my grandparents at 32 Penpol Terrace, they being Thos. & Eliz Drew. Then with my parents, Dad being Thomas Jnr. visited throughout the 30s and 40s (war years) until called up for National Service, returning again mid 50s. The Pump brings such happy memories. I have enjoyed reading articles regarding Rick Rescorla. I remember in my school-days my grandparents’ neighbours were a Mr & Mrs Rescorla (next door) who I believe had returned from the USA (?) with a daughter, a Mrs Grievers. I visited Mr Rescorla, at that time bed- ridden. I also loved to sit on the bench opposite the house and remember Italian P.O.W.s being marched down the terrace after working on local farms. Also mentioned was the beached French crabber, my grandfather told me it either carried people fleeing from occupied France or was brought in by the Navy in suspicious circumstances?? After my National Service, visiting with a friend we bathed in the clear water surrounding the ship and swung on the rope from the yard-arm. As a child I also enjoyed being rowed from the weir to Lelant by Jack

Reporting from Bodriggy Academy Bug Mansion, Gardens and Woodland Walk, volunteer Sandie Morgan writes: A walk through the gardens at the beginning of March, after all the bad weather, must have lifted everyone’s spirits as the gardens came to life and daffodils, crocus and snowdrops all appeared, heralding the Spring. I have been asked many times where the Big Bugs have gone and are they coming back ? The good news is that they have been taken to Bodriggy for repair and will be returning soon along with some new friends! Unfortunately, due to bad weather and high winds, the Bug Mansion itself collapsed but thanks to Shirley Thompson, it has been rebuilt and

26 looks fantastic. The resident robin seems to like it as well. I feel that the beautiful flowers, foliage and wonderful wild life makes this part of Hayle a really special place and hope you agree. Our monthly meetings are held on the last Monday of the month in Passmore Edwards Institute at 7.00pm All are welcome.

Hayle Guitar Club We have the dates for the themed nights arranged for the next month or two and they are as follows: on the 4th of April we have an open mike and jam session, if you want to come on down and have a good experience playing your songs, this is the night. The following week, the 11th, we have the electric session, so bring your 'Strats and Gibsons' down and have a go. On the 25th of April we have a short workshop on the Pentatonic scale and various patterns that can be used. We had a similar night in March that went down well so we are going over it again. To finish off the month we have an electric guitar- rock, blues and solo session on the 30th of May. Everybody is welcome, bring down your choice of music and have a blast. From the news front, on the 7th Feb the Rock band, one of the many offshoots from the guitar club entertained, at the Queen’s Hotel, the

27 Alzheimer’s and In Care residents. They were singing and dancing to that good old rock - n - roll, the old songs aren't always the best but the memories that go with them always are. Another spin-off from the club is the band called ' Not Yet ' comprising Dave Cupples, Dave Ledbury and Jonothan Powel. They entertain and do charity events. On the 20th of Feb they arranged a concert in aid of Cancer Research in commemoration of Nichols who was well known in the music circles around Penzance. Also joining the entertainment was the local trio ‘Carneja’ consisting of Alison Powel, Jonothan and Phil. £100 was raised on the night. Some of the highlights of the night were their renditions of -- 'Black is Black' 'Don't be Cruel' 'Hey Baby' ‘Rhinestone Cowboy' 'Hello Mary Lou '. If you have a guitar or a bass or even a keyboard and a spare Wednesday night come on down to the Passmore Institute at 7p.m.and enjoy the night, even if you are still learning you will find everybody are only too willing to help . . The good news is that this popular event is being held again this year, but at Hayle Recreation Ground 28 instead of along King George V Memorial Walk. Events, which are still at the planning stage, include Classis Cars, BBQ, Dog Show, full music programme and refreshments. Full information in next issue. Hayle Summer Carnival Hayle Carnival Committee is pleased to announce a new venue for this year’s Carnival Queen and Attendants choosing ceremony. 30 Kim Potter Art Old Foundry Chapel Hayle. Kim's artistic career started when she left school at 15 and joined world famous ceramics company Royal Doulton as an apprentice 'Paintress'. A Paintress was someone who hand painted figurines, ‘flatware’ such as plates and character or ‘Toby' jugs. After serving her apprenticeship, Kim worked at many well-known studios such as Aynsley China and Wedgwood. Throughout Kim’s life she has been drawn to nature, to the sea and more specifically to the beautiful coastline of Cornwall, she says, as a young girl, when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up her answer was invariably 'a mermaid'! Kim's art is inspired by the ethereal influences of the coastal landscape and the constant brooding presence of the Atlantic Ocean. Take pride in your town! A lot of the art you see in Cornwall is very 'blue and yellow' reflecting Come and take the fabulous sunshine and wonderful part in golden beaches, however for those HAYLE fortunate to live here all year, each CLEAN-UP season brings its own bounty. Penwith DEMENTIA ACTION ALLIANCE Working towards a Dementia Friendly Community Dementia Action Alliance has been in existence since 2014. It works to help our area become dementia-friendly. What exactly does that mean? A dementia-friendly community is composed of everyone in the community – shops, public services, faith communities, organisations, businesses, emergency services, transport and community leaders as well as individuals – committing themselves to work together to help people with dementia remain a part of their community and not become apart from it. This involves learning a few things about dementia and doing very simple and practical things that can make an enormous difference. Our members are drawn from across the area, from business, the health professions, Rotary Clubs, local councils, research and the voluntary sector. We are a small team and always welcome new members who can work with us to make life better for those living with dementia. Please contact the Secretary on 01736 788107, or [email protected]. We have a Facebook page – “Penwith Dementia Action Alliance” - and website: www.dementiafriendlypenwith.btc

33 S.O.S. Save our Sand Beach Clean Plastic waste on our beaches seems to be in the news lately but anyone who spends time on the beach will know it’s been a problem for years. Big tides and onshore winds can bury or churn up stuff that’s gradually breaking down until it’s too small to pick up, and eventually, too small to see. But it’s still there, being ingested by marine life, and, at the top of the food chain, us! Among the usual haul of plastic bottles and packaging, glass, ‘disposable’ barbecues, and the year- round scourge of discarded offcuts of polypropylene line from the fishing industry, we had some unusual finds in 2017. An invasion of Portuguese Man- Of- War jellyfish littered the tideline, but we also found an oven door, a heavy duty boat battery, an Irish racing pigeon and a fine selection of swimwear and undies. The strangest was a cremation urn, complete with the remains of a lady from the West Midlands who presumably wanted to spend the rest of eternity on our lovely beach. If you feel like joining us for an hour or two this summer it would be great to see you at any of our events, or you could be one of the unsung heroes who take a bag with them every time they go to the beach and just pick up what they can. Rick Rescorla The personal story by Mervyn Sullivan Continued from last issue.

Rick’s return visits home to Cornwall... On his home visits Rick never failed to meet up with his old friend John Couch (no longer with us) a well- known character in the Foundry area who lived in the bottom house in Penpol Road. He could always be seen tending his vegetable garden and used this as an excuse to talk to nearly everybody passing by, locals and visitors alike. On meeting up one day on a visit home, Rick picked John up, tucked him under his arm, and ran fifty yards down to Hampson’s pasty shop, put him down, put his hand in his pocket and produced an American silver dollar which John had asked for a year before. “Is this what you asked for?” John was amazed... Rick, with his extremely busy life in the States, had remembered his old friend back home in Cornwall. It was to become

35 John’s prize possession. On another occasion Rick was returning home at teatime to his mother’s house opposite the Mill Pond, and noticed several people looking into the Pond. To his amazement he saw that someone had thrown the Foundry Hill school lollipop crossing pole out into the water. Without a second thought he jumped fully clothed into the pond, waded out, retrieved the pole and put it back into his mother’s garden where the crossing lady kept it, “Amy will be needing that in the morning to make sure the children can cross safely” Amy was the wife of another of Rick’s old friends, Geoffrey Williams who used to live in Mellanear Road. Rick was an avid speed reader and had what is called a “photographic memory.” History, local churches, films, classical music, world wars, politics, Shakespeare, famous artists, Greek philosophy.in fact nearly every subject was of interest to him, and he could discuss any subject at any level with anyone. An amazing knowledge. Rick would take his wife Susan all around Cornwall, showing her places of interest and visiting local churches. They renewed their wedding vows in the grounds of Lelant Church, the burial ground of his grandfather. We would visit art galleries and potteries and Rick would want to talk about their works with the artists, discussing techniques and materials.

36 One morning, after a hefy breakfast in a local café, we started out to give my dog a walk over to the beach. On the way he called into Philps pasty shop...”Just grabbing a mid-morning snack”...On reaching the beach we stood on the cliff overlooking the bay. It was a clear, still morning with no sound. “You don’t know how lucky you are...to stand here free and safe, with a view like that.” Then he said “Don’t say a word....” We stood in silence for a couple of minutes, then Rick raised his fist as though challenging the world and recited, word for word, the entire battle scene speech from the film Henry V. “Once more dear friends, once more...etc”. Even my dog was bemused. The next morning, on the dog walk, Rick came charging down a small sand dune on the Electric Works beach, acting the part of Lawrence of Arabia...on the third day my poor little dog was a bit reluctant to go for a walk. Rick’s favourite place to go was Trencrom Hill. To him this was a very special sacred place where he said he felt at home with his Celtic forefathers. He would sit alone on the giant granite boulders and contemplate as though amongst his ancestors. He had always said that when he died he wanted his ashes scattered on Trencrom Hill. Having being lost in the South Tower collapse no remains were ever found. Therefore no ashes to fulfil his lifelong wish. So on a later visit made over here to Cornwall, Susan, my wife Jan and myself climbed Trencrom on a very windy day, went 37 to the highest point and released a St 18th RNLI AGM....Page 33 Piran’s flag into the wind and it eventually fluttered down to become 22nd: SOS Beach Clean....Page35 entangled in the bright yellow gorse. 26th: Film Club Passmore Edwards Final episode next issue. Anyone wanting to help out can attend at the pool on any Saturday in April or May between 11:30 am and 15:00 pm. Just bring your old clothes and whatever tools you need. There are some painting jobs and quite a bit of cleaning to do this year, but on the whole it is not looking as big a task as we usually undertake.
