Calling CAMRA members from all branches…..

 Enjoyed your holiday in Cornwall?  Had a few great local beers?  Visited a few great pubs but would like to go to another one or two?  Think it would be a great place to come back to with a few of your CAMRA friends?

Well please take up Cornwall CAMRA’s invitation to bring your local group down to Cornwall. We are inviting you to come down and join us for a pint or two of great local beer in lovely surroundings over the year. Cornwall is a fantastic county at any time of the year, not just in the summer!

Last year some members of the Wakefield Branch of CAMRA visited Cornwall to present an award to Rebel Brewery. They met up with some of our members and visited some of the local hostelries as well as the brewery. We enjoyed hosting them for their trip and they have even invited us back to Wakefield for a few beers.

We thought this was a great way to get to know other branch members and to showcase our local breweries and beers in visits, tastings and pints in a local pub or two. We can make some suggestions for pubs to visit, arrange some brewery visits and meet up with you during the weekend to enjoy swapping stories over a pint.

Take a pint of Cornwall home with you and bring back your CAMRA friends to enjoy the best of Cornwall’s beer and cider throughout the year. If you would like to arrange a visit please email me, Ann Burnett, the Social Secretary on [email protected]

We then moved on the short dis- tance to the Seven Stars that was St Austell Brewery’s first pub in the town. As part of a recent refurbish- ment one wall of the interior has a display showing the history of the brewery. The leaning bollard in the street was testimony more to the difficulty in traffic negotiating the narrow streets than the state of those on the walk- about ! It wasn’t long before we all squeezed on to a No.24 bus to take us to Charlestown where The Rash- leigh and Pier House were enjoyed before we all made our separate ways home. Another well organised grand day out on a Wednesday.

Despite this the beer festival held in Walpole Park, Ealing was a suc- cess. Having attended this festival several times in previous years your editor knew what to expect in that there were over 500 beers, including 370 cask ales, plus cider/perry, foreign bottled beer, English wines and this year 15 beers served straight from the wood. All this was housed in giant marquees with all kinds of food stalls around the perimeter of a large open air seating area. Fortunately there were passing clouds in an otherwise clear blue sky, but as the sun shone most of the time it was often too hot. All the shady spots under the chestnut trees had been bagged before my arrival.

GOOD BEER GUIDE PUB SELECTION

The 2019 Good Beer Guide is now available from the online CAMRA Shop, at the Falmouth Beer Festival, or our Cornwall Branch Pubs Officer, Rod Davis at the next meeting.

You may be asking how the selection process works for each year’s Guide? Well the hunt for suitable candidates to go into the each Good Beer Guide is a constant one. As the editor of the guide restricts the Cornwall Branch to the number of entries we are allowed to submit, only the very best, who sell consistently good real ale throughout the year, get selected. Contrary to popular belief, nobody gets ‘dropped’ out of the Guide – it is effectively scrapped each year and the CAMRA membership has to sit down and argue its way through a new set of candidates and do a re-write. To help us in our selection, we collect beer quality information through CAMRA’s National Beer Scoring System (NBSS) in which members are asked to contribute scores for beers that they have tasted in pubs throughout the year. This information is then used during the meetings in January and February each year to assist with the selection process.

The easiest way to score beers is by using the online pub guide WhatPub (http://whatpub.com) using your membership number and chosen password. Search for the pub on the data base using pub name, town or follow the drop down menus that are there to help. Submit your beer score from 0-5 and all these will be forwarded to the branch coordinator. A version of WhatPub optimised for use on a smart phone and a downloadable app are now avail- able, so that you can now score your beer in the pub while you drink it! If you don’t have online access at all (and we appreciate that not all members have this means of reporting beer scores) you can ask your NBSS Coordinator which in Cornwall CAMRA’s case is Steve Barber. He will normally be at any branch meeting with paper forms that he will then be able to enter your scores for you. To make this selection system work at its optimum we need many more members of CAMRA to submit their scores.

We ask members to score the pubs continually not just once or twice. Please spend a small amount of time beer scoring and be an active member.

The original independent guide to good beer and good pubs

Now in its 46th edition, the beer-lovers’ bible is fully revised and updated each year to feature recommended pubs across the that serve the best real ale. The Guide is completely independent, with listings based entirely on evaluation by CAMRA members. The unique breweries section lists every brewery – micro, regional and national – that produces real ale in the UK as well as describing their core beers. Tasting notes for the beers, compiled by CAMRA-trained tasting teams, are also included. This is the complete book for beer lovers and for anyone wanting to experience the UK’s finest pubs.

CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2019 sponsored by Cask Marque

Cask Marque has supported the Good Beer Guide since 1990. Every single listed pub that has been accredited by Cask Marque has the Cask Marque tick symbol next to it in the Guide – a further endorsement for cask ale drinkers.

Paul Nunny, Director of Cask Marque said: “The Good Beer Guide is still the leading publi- cation listing the best pubs in Britain and will be cele- brating its 46th year of publication. An entry in the book can have a significant impact on the awareness of a pub, which is why we continue to lend our support to its publication.”
