Uaunton BARNICOTT &- PEARCE, ATHEN^UM PRESS 1907 BARNICOTT AND PEARCE PRINTERS Preface. T is usual to write something as a preface, and this generally appears to be to make some excuse for having written at all. In a pre- face to Tom Toole and his Friends — a very interesting book published a few years ago, by Mrs. Henry Sandford, in which the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, together with the Wedgwoods and many other eminent men of that day figure,—the author says, on one occasion, when surrounded by old letters, note books, etc., an old and faithful servant remon- " " strated with her thus : And what for ? she " demanded very emphatically. There's many a hundred dozen books already as nobody ever reads." Her hook certainly justified her efforts, and needed no excuse. But what shall I say of this } What for do 1 launch this little book, which only refers to the parish ot Mylor ^ vi Preface. The great majority of us are convinced that the county of our birth is the best part of Eng- land, and if we are folk country-born, that our parish is the most favoured spot in it. With something of this idea prompting me, I have en- deavoured to look up all available information and documents, and elaborate such by personal recollections and by reference to authorities.

  • Gwennap War Memorial
GWENNAP WAR MEMORIAL Compiled by Barbara Wilkinson The War Memorial at Gwennap was unveiled on Saturday 17 July 1920 to commemorate the dead of the First World War, and the ceremony was reported in the West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser on Thursday 22 July 1920. Other local newspapers also carried the story. GWENAPP’S CROSS UNVEILED BY THE LORD LIEUTENANT The Lord‐Lieutenant of Cornwall (Mr. J.C. Williams), on Saturday, unveiled the memorial erected by the parishioners of Gwennap in memory of 16 men from the parish who made the supreme sacrifice in the war. The memorial consists of a beautiful cross of Cornish granite, standing eleven feet high, which has been placed on a piece of elevated ground near the boundary wall of the parish churchyard. The inscription reads:‐ “To the honour of those who at the call of King and Country gave up all that was dear to them that others might live in freedom, 1914‐1918” Underneath are the following names: Harry Powys Rogers, James Phillips, Thomas Collins, James Gleed, Arthur Prowse, William Trenery, William Hitchins, Richard Ford, Thomas Carbis, William Tregoning, William Collins, John Hooker, Gilbert Pelmear, James Annear, Philip Russell, George Pelmear. The arrangements for the memorial, costing about £70, were made by a committee, consisting of the vicar, Rev. J.L. Parker (chairman) Messrs. Towan Hancock, G.E. Prowse and R.T. Harris. The clergy and ministers taking part in Saturday’s unveiling ceremony were the Revs. J.L. Parker (vicar), W.H.C. Nalton (vicar of Lannarth), H. Hopkinson (superintendant minister of Gwennap Wesleyan Circuit), and W.

  • The Dagg People in St. Kew Jim Dagg, February 2015
The Dagg People in St. Kew Jim Dagg, February 2015 St Kew parish, one of over 220 in the Duchy of Cornwall, is north of the town of Wadebridge, north of the Camel Valley and inland from Port Isaac in North Cornwall. About 1100 people are permanent residents of the 6500-acre parish and live in hamlets and farms connected by hedge-lined lanes. The lanes are narrow and twisting. Drive with care. Forty miles an hour can lead to some scary encounters with wildlife, other drivers or walkers. Both cyclists and eight and half foot-wide tractors are on a stop-for-nothing mission. The ancient hamlets are called Chapel Amble, Trewethern, Trewethen, St Kew Highway, St Kew, Trelill, Trequite, Tregellist, and Pendoggett. The origins of St Kew parish, lurk in the mists of time. Ancient beginnings have emerged in the work of many historians, archaeologists and people researching family records that are constantly being discovered. Although I am not one of those lucky types, I have developed a spectator interest during many visits to Cornwall, starting back in the early 1970s. Today, the parish is all quiet farmland. There once was a railway, but the station at St Kew Highway closed in the 1960s. Now a main road runs north to south, the A39, optimistically named the Atlantic Highway, and the B3314 road clips the north-west corner through Pendoggett, but all roads by-pass the church town of St Kew. 1 The heart of St Kew parish is St Kew hamlet and the parish church, St James the Great.

Although hidden from view, the house is situated in the centre of the unspoiled village of St Kew where the ancient church, the popular St Kew Inn and the excellent local primary school are all within a few hundred yards. A real haven for nature lovers, the property lies near the boundaries of two officially designated Areas, one being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty along the North Cornwall Coast, and the second being the Area of Great Landscape Value of the Camel and Allen Valleys. There are magnificent cliffs and secluded coves, fishing villages and rugged stretches of open moorland nearby, ideal for anyone who is enthusiastic about the outdoors.

  • Trequite Chapel Region: Cornwall Sleeps: 9
Trequite Chapel Region: Cornwall Sleeps: 9 Overview From the second you arrive at Trequite Chapel, the sense of magic will enshroud you. The surroundings, the attention to detail, the history and the beautiful touches all around the house, combine to provide a truly unique, wonderful property that is wholly unforgettable. This charming holiday home was converted from a former chapel, originally built in 1821. The high beamed ceilings, stone walls and slate floors all speak to the chapel’s past, whilst the reclaimed wood and stone that feature throughout the modern additions tie old and new together elegantly. This stunning, four-bedroom holiday home can comfortably accommodate up to nine guests, perfect for family gatherings or a break away with friends. We can almost guarantee that you’ll be wanting to revisit this stunning property time and time again, soaking in a little more of the magic and inspiration each time you stay. The ground floor boasts the main living areas, with a modern family kitchen and dining area, as well as a fabulous lounge. A stone wall divides the two spaces, with an open doorway, so you can walk between them unobstructed. In the living room, the high ceilings are supported by beautiful exposed beams. Modern skylights flood the room with light, whilst rough, textured walls add a warmth and cosiness to the otherwise bright and spacious room. A wood burning stove and large sofas furnish this remarkable space. The four bedrooms are spread around the property, with a bunk bedroom and a bathroom completing the ground floor. On the lower ground floor, there is a stunning en-suite double bedroom featuring full height chapel style windows overlooking garden.
