There's many a hundred dozen books already as nobody ever reads." Her hook certainly justified her efforts, and needed no excuse. But what shall I say of this } What for do 1 launch this little book, which only refers to the parish ot Mylor ^ vi Preface. The great majority of us are convinced that the county of our birth is the best part of Eng- land, and if we are folk country-born, that our parish is the most favoured spot in it. There are picturesque harbours and grand country houses set in vast acreages. There are impressive landmarks from the past such as Tintagel Castle, St Michael’s Mount and more standing stones and Neolithic sites than you can shake a stick at. They exist happily alongside the present day futuristic domes of Eden, the stately grey bulk of Tate St Ives, old Mine chimneys (sensibly bestowed with World Heritage status) and the spoil heaps of the clay pits near St Austell. 35 BEST OF CORNWALL 2020 However there is more to Cornwall’s appeal than It was clear that luck landmarks.     GWENNAP WAR MEMORIAL Compiled by Barbara Wilkinson The War Memorial at Gwennap was unveiled on Saturday 17 July 1920 to commemorate the dead of the First World War, and the ceremony was reported in the West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser on Thursday 22 July 1920. Other local newspapers also carried the story. GWENAPP’S CROSS UNVEILED BY THE LORD LIEUTENANT The Lord‐Lieutenant of Cornwall (Mr. J.C. Williams), on Saturday, unveiled the memorial erected by the parishioners of Gwennap in memory of 16 men from the parish who made the supreme sacrifice in the war. The memorial consists of a beautiful cross of Cornish granite, standing eleven feet high, which has been placed on a piece of elevated ground near the boundary wall of the parish churchyard. The inscription reads:‐ “To the honour of those who at the call of King and Country gave up all that was dear to them that others might live in freedom, 1914‐1918” Underneath are the following names: Harry Powys Rogers, James Phillips, Thomas Collins, James Gleed, Arthur Prowse, William Trenery, William Hitchins, Richard Ford, Thomas Carbis, William Tregoning, William Collins, John Hooker, Gilbert Pelmear, James Annear, Philip Russell, George Pelmear. The arrangements for the memorial, costing about £70, were made by a committee, consisting of the vicar, Rev. J.L. Parker (chairman) Messrs. Towan Hancock, G.E. Prowse and R.T. Harris. The clergy and ministers taking part in Saturday’s unveiling ceremony were the Revs. J.L. Parker (vicar), W.H.C. Nalton (vicar of Lannarth), H. Hopkinson (superintendant minister of Gwennap Wesleyan Circuit), and W.

    THE John Harris Newsletter Society No 60 Summer 2017 John Harris: miner, poet, preacher 1820-1884 This classic and beautiful picture of Wheal Coates, on Cornwall’s north coast between Porthtowan and St Agnes, taken by Tony Kent, of Truro, has been used on the flyer being sent to organisations and individuals worldwide to highlight the bi-centenary festival of John Harris in 2020. We are extremely grateful to Tony for allowing us to use this photograph. See page 3 for a picture of the complete flyer. JHS 2 Annual general meeting – 18 February ’17 Thirty four people, including descendants of William John Bennetts, attended the meeting and stayed for David Thomas‘ presentation of ‗The William John Ben- netts Photographic Archive’ (covering the Camborne district in the Victorian pe- riod). We are grateful to David and to those who provided and served the refresh- ments as they concluded a very pleasant, interesting and informative afternoon. At the meeting, we welcomed three new members to the Society and I am de- lighted to say that Mr Peter Bickford-Smith, of Chynhale, was appointed as our President for a four-year period which will give continuity through our 2020 Bi- Centenary Festival. Further information about Peter is included later in this news- Paul Langford letter. During the business meeting, thanks were expressed to Caroline Palmer for her maintenance of the Facebook page and to Diane Hodnett for keeping the website up to date. The fact that we are not a wealthy Society was shown by the financial statement that showed a balance at 31 December 2016 of £726.93.

Now we are looking at the AGM Horse Hike Reports coming up already. It’s been a tough winter but we have got Horse Hike Programme off more lightly in the far southwest. We just got rain, rain and more rain whilst up country got the white stuff. The horses ‘ploughed the fields and splattered the good grass off the land. and more … But they’ve been fed and watered by our unstinting hand.’ (apologies to the hymn!) Now with the recent dry weather the poached ground has set like concrete. Every bridleway and track continued to be as bad as ever under hoof. Horse hikes had to be cancelled but recently, we have had some lucky breaks to run a few good rides in reasonable weather. Chapel Carn Brea, Great Flat Lode, and a new venue at Marazion brought out a lot of riders. The recently opened new Gwallon bridleway will enable Marazion to become a regular ride. An informal Trec competition took place on the last day of February with a crash course and demo in the morning before real action in the afternoon.
