Sevillano, Ph.D University of Nebraska, 2011 Advisors: Óscar Pereira Zazo and Elizabeth Wilhelmsen This dissertation concerns the Castilian sonnets of Luís de Camões, a sixteenth century Portuguese poet known for his epic work Os Lusíadas (1572). Camões’ sonnets comprise the greater part of his minor works. I present those written in Castilian, which have not been fully explored. The study commences by focusing on its historical-literary context, revealing the background for the tradition of the lyric in the Iberian Peninsula, and incorporates a section dedicated to the history of the sonnet. In later chapters, I analyze the sonnets, and include endnotes that explicate the poetic language. Camões follows Petrarch, although stylistic factors betray him simultaneously as a Mannerist. The first edition of the Rimas (1595) appeared in Lisbon fifteen years after Camões’ death. Because this book was published posthumously, its sonnets have presented a challenge in ascertaining their authenticity. I detail how in 1595, Rimas features sixty sonnets; by the eighteenth century they number 400, and by the end of the nineteenth century, they are reduced to half. Most of this corpus was authenticated at end of the nineteenth century by the German critics: Wilhelm Storck and Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcellos. Out of the 30 sonnets in Castilian that I present, four are judged to be genuinely Camões. Since these four Castilian sonnets are incorporated into a number of Camões’ complete works and are classified as being authentic by the nineteenth and twentieth century critics, I have also classified them the same way, stating who has authenticated them into the Camões’ canon. The source is María de Lurdes Saraiva’s complete collection of Camões’ lyrics, in which she indicates the critics who label them as camoneanos, as well as the CD-ROM of his Vida e Obra, which both classify and separate them as authentic or apocryphal. The remaining 26 sonnets are apocryphal. I highlight that the poet’s authentic sonnets employ mythology, an element not so prevalent in the apocryphal ones. iv Copyright Copyright 2011, Rose M. Jorge Luis Borges (1898-1986) Obra poética, 1923-1977 ―La mayoría de los poetas del siglo XVI carece de ediciones y estudios críticos suficientes, que permitan medir su aportación en el desarrollo de la lírica española‖ (Checa Cremades 9). También Elías Rivers dice en su libro El soneto español en el Siglo de Oro: ―Aunque existen ya buenas ediciones de la mayor parte de los sonetistas más importantes del Siglo de Oro, la historia del soneto español está todavía por escribir‖ (8). A la lírica española de este siglo se puede añadir Luís Vaz de Camões, considerado el ―Poeta nacional de Portugal‖, quien fue también soldado, es decir, un hombre de armas y de letras. “A obra espanhola de Camões é a mais alta expressão e o mais feliz resultado do bilingüismo tão largamente praticado pelos escritores portugueses do século XVI” (Vieira de Lemos y Martínez Almoyna 24). El enfoque de este trabajo monográfico es presentar los sonetos castellanos auténticos y apócrifos de Camões como poeta clásico en una edición.

The choice of this topic is justified in view of the divergent previous modern historiography and because of the lack of a coherent historical investigation. The present study is based on a broad selec- tion of primary sources, in particular from classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance. Firstly, this article traces and clarifies the prehistory of the concept of Vulgar Latin in ancient and medieval linguistic thought. Section 2 demonstrates that the concept of Vulgar Latin as a low social variety does not exist in pre-Renaissance linguistic thought. Secondly, this article describes and analyzes how, why and when the con- cept of Vulgar Latin emerged and developed in the linguistic thought of the Italian Renaissance. Section 3 surveys the historical intellectual contexts of the debates in which this concept was formed, namely questione della lingua in the Latin and Vernacular Italian Renaissances. Section 4 demonstrates how the ancient concept and term of sermo vulgaris as a diaphasic variety was revived, but also modified, in the Latin Renaissance of the fifteenth century, when the leading humanists developed new ideas on the history, nature and variability of ancient Latin.

    Spanish Viplence in the Theatre ofGil Vicente Maria Dodman fOrk University One of the noted accomplisments ofthe Portuguese dramatist, Gil Vicente, has been his ability to portray 16th century Iberian societ;y. Indeed, most critics have pointed out this feature as well as Vicente's sharp criticism, especially towards the clergy and the nobility. In terms of violence, the Portuguese playwright lived through one of the most agitated and violent periods in Portuguese history. The violence that characterized the encounters with others in the new worlds, the violence ofthe Inquisition and the violence toward the Jews. Regarding the latter, Gil Vicente was one ofthe few who condemned such violent behaviour and advocated for kindness and tolerancel . Vicente also lived in a court where the presence ofthe Spanish was part ofdaily.affairs. At the service ofa bilingual court, the Portuguese playwright, like many of his contemporaries, and in addition to his Portuguese works, also wrote many bilingual and Spanish texts. For a writer who constantly critized the vanities and excesses ofthe clergy and the nobility, it should come as no surprise that he extends his criticism to the neighbouring Spain. Thus, the goal ofthis article is to examine the theme ofviolence within the portrayal ofthe Spanish" in vicentine theatre. Generally speaking, his views of the Spanish are, for the most part, negative. While Dante’s reception and his transformation into a cultural authority have traditionally been investigated from the point of view of the Commedia, I argue that these lyric anthologies provide a new perspective for understanding how the physical act of rewriting Dante’s poems in various combinations and with other texts has shaped what I call after Foucault the Dante function” and consecrated Dante as an author from the Middle Ages to Modernity. The study of these lyric anthologies widens our understanding of the process of Dante’s canonization as an author and, thus, as an authority (auctor & auctoritas), advancing our awareness of authors both as entities that generate power and that are generated by power.

Analyzing a specific corpus of the Vicentian theater (the pieces Rubena, Viúvo, Amadis de Gaula and Dom Duardos), the present paper tries to explain the historical motifs that permeate the theme of the ‘disguised prince’, considering the program of eulogy of the monarchy proposed by Gil Vicente, as well as an analysis of the nature of the humanist love spread by 16th century poets and philosophers. The disguise in the lower classes reveals the aristocratic essence of the courtesan, but also the ritualistic experience in the trajectory of the spiritualized love. Cooper Cardinal Pietro Bembo’s accomplishments as a poet, linguist, philologist, and historian are well known, but his activities as an art collector have been comparatively little studied. In his writing, he directed his attention to the past via texts—Ciceronean Latin and Petrarchan Italian—for their potential to transform present and future ideas. His assembly of antiquities and contemporary art served an intermediary function parallel to his study of texts. In this dissertation I investigate Bembo as an agent of cultural exchange by offering a reconstruction of his art collection and, in so doing, access his thinking in a way not yet accomplished in previous work on this writer. Chapter One offers a historiographic overview of my topic and collecting as a subject of art historical study. Chapter Two maps the competition and overlapping interests of collectors who bought from Bembo’s heirs.
