INTRODUCTION This comprehensive book is the handy companion to our more detailed UK Combine Vols.1 & 2 and UK Pocket Book and similarly lists all operational or stored locos on the various , Preserved and Private railway lines / sites in the UK. Former UK stock ex- ported or preserved abroad is also listed. The full list of std gauge industrial steam locos is included for the first time in this edition. Northern Irish locos which used to be provided in a separate book is not currently included but may well be in the future.

Unless shown otherwise entries are laid out as follows: ^ denotes fictitious number

Locomotives / LU Locos (except Cl.01/5 - see section for explanation) No. / [Works No.] - [Previous Nos] - Pool - Depot / Location - Name

In the Location column: brackets eg (TO) denote a storage location for mainline stock

In the Pool column: Wdn = Withdrawn, Pres = Preserved, Priv = Private Owner / Industrial use.

We have tried to make this book as comprehensive and as user friendly as possible, especially to help newcomers to our hobby, so we hope you enjoy this publication prepared by Inter City Railway Society. Remember we are all volunteers and keeping track of changes then compiling the final book is a non-stop task done throughout the year. Hopefully any errors or typos have been removed during proof reading but some always slip through, so if you have any comments or know of further additions or amendments, please contact us. If we don't there is an error we can't fix it.

For a comprehensive list of all Locomotives operated by BR since 1948 showing all re- numberings with complete cross reference tables and disposal details then please consider our Ultimate Sighting Files Vol.1 Mainline Diesel Locomotives (UKRS10) and Vol.2 Shunters, Mainline Electric & Prototype Locomotives (UKRS11). These books are a handy way to record all your sightings showing the current status and irrespective of whether they no longer exist. They also contain comprehensive re-numbering cross reference tables.

PRESERVED STEAM LOCOMOTIVES This section includes most Preserved Steam Locomotives, except narrow gauge Industrials. These are, First Generation designs (various gauges either before the mid 19th century or later replicas), standard gauge and some narrow gauge steam locomotives that were built for and / or were operated by the Big Four / former constituent companies / British Railways. Other standard gauge Industrial locos are split into the following, WD Austerity 0-6-0STs, Fireless, Crane Tanks and Others. The status of each loco is shown as locos are only active whilst they have a current 10 year boiler certificate and the date that this expires has now been shown. Note it is possible that the certificate will not last for the 10 years due to faults being identified, however work then carried to improve its condition may lead to an extension or a fresh 10 year certificate. Knowing the boiler expiry date is particularly handy if you wish to see locos working and then plan to see those where expiry is imminent as many locos do not immediately return to steam and may become dismantled or stored for several years whilst works space / time and money can be found. Some locos have adopted the identity of a classmate eg 45407 is now 45157 or reverted back eg [34052]

New locomotives eg. 60163 built to replace missing classes or in the case of 9351 what might have been, are also included but only once construction has started on major components. The four former War Department (WD) locos are also included that never worked in the UK prior to being repatriated and given UK identities in preservation ie. 8274, 45170, 90733 & 90775 and these are denoted by (WD) in the area code. The former operating area for each loco is listed with the exception of recent new builds. As some locos often swap between pre and post BR numbers or other company identities, all are shown where applicable as is a works number if that is the only identification eg [6515] Note that for special anniversaries / galas some locos temporarily masquerade as other classmates long scrapped.

The WD locos that the LNER bought were represented by all the different manufacturers, with 29 in service and in store with the WD and 6 still under construction with AB. The split was AB (10), HC (14), HE (14), RSH (7), VF (14) & WGB (16). Six of the J94s were sold to the NCB after withdrawal by BR between 1963-66 of which only 2 are preserved 68077/78 (see Stan- dard Gauge Locos). Of the remaining locos preserved the split by manufacturer is AB (3), HC (3), HE (52), RSH (8), VF (2) & WB (7).

The locos are listed by works number, usually the most identifiable as their running numbers often change between the various WD, NCB or other numbers including fictitious BR 68xxx numbers. loco build dates omitted for clarity, loco re-built where two works numbers shown # re-built as 0-6-0 tender loco, $ re-built with side tanks
