Jason Lezak was born on Nov. 12, 1975 in Irvine, , where he grew up playing a num- ber of different sports. At age 5, he began swimming at Irvine Novaquatics, the aquatic center he still uses to train today. As a boy, Lezak competed in the Junior Olympics and earned All-American status as a senior in high school. Upon graduation, Lezak received a scholarship to UC Santa Barbara. After struggling his freshman and sophomore years, he placed a then career best 5th at NCAA cham- pionships his junior year. In his senior year, he went on to win the national title in the 100 freestyle. At the 2004 Olympic trials in Long Beach, Jason broke the American record in the 100 free- style. In Athens, he, and three American teammates, took the bronze in the 400 freestyle relay. He then fi nished those Olympic games by anchoring the 400 medley relay team, which broke the world record and won the gold medal. During the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Lezak took home a bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle and won a second Olympic gold in the medley relay. Lezak, however, is most recognized for anchoring the US 4x100 meter freestyle relay. Prior to that race, the French relay team, who was favored to win the event, told members of the media that they were going to “smash the Americans.” After the fi rst three legs of the race, the French team held the lead by an entire body length. Anchoring the French team was Alain Bernard, the 100 meter freestyle gold medalist, and when he entered the water, most of the world considered the race to be locked up by the French. Below are the on-air commentaries by NBC’s Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gains - “The trying to hang on to second, they should get the silver medal, Australia is in Bronze territory right now, but Lezak is closing a little bit on Bernard, can the veteran chase him down and pull off a shocker here? There’s no doubt that he’s tightening up. Bernard is losing some ground, here comes Lezak... UNBELIEVABLE AT THE END, HE’S DONE IT! THE U.S. HAS DONE IT! HE DID IT! HE DID IT! Phelps’s hopes [are] alive!”

Jason Lezak swam a never-before-seen 46.06 second split, the fastest 100 meter split in world history, to out-touch Bernard by .08 seconds and win the gold. Lezak’s come-from-behind swim also kept Michael Phelps’ historic quest for eight gold medals alive, which Phelps would eventually accomplish. Jason Lezak currently holds three World records, is a three time Olympian and has seven Olympic Medals.
