At age 5, he began swimming at Irvine Novaquatics, the aquatic center he still uses to train today. As a boy, Lezak competed in the Junior Olympics and earned All-American status as a senior in high school. Upon graduation, Lezak received a scholarship to UC Santa Barbara. After struggling his freshman and sophomore years, he placed a then career best 5th at NCAA cham- pionships his junior year. In his senior year, he went on to win the national title in the 100 freestyle. At the 2004 Olympic trials in Long Beach, Jason broke the American record in the 100 free- style. In Athens, he, and three American teammates, took the bronze in the 400 freestyle relay. He then fi nished those Olympic games by anchoring the 400 medley relay team, which broke the world record and won the gold medal. During the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Lezak took home a bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle and won a second Olympic gold in the medley relay. Lezak, however, is most recognized for anchoring the US 4x100 meter freestyle relay. Prior to that race, the French relay team, who was favored to win the event, told members of the media that they were going to “smash the Americans.” After the fi rst three legs of the race, the French team held the lead by an entire body length. Anchoring the French team was Alain Bernard, the 100 meter freestyle gold medalist, and when he entered the water, most of the world considered the race to be locked up by the French. Below are the on-air commentaries by NBC’s Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gains - “The United States trying to hang on to second, they should get the silver medal, Australia is in Bronze territory right now, but Lezak is closing a little bit on Bernard, can the veteran chase him down and pull off a shocker here? There’s no doubt that he’s tightening up. Bernard is losing some ground, here comes Lezak... UNBELIEVABLE AT THE END, HE’S DONE IT! THE U.S. HAS DONE IT! HE DID IT! HE DID IT! Phelps’s hopes [are] alive!” Jason Lezak swam a never-before-seen 46.06 second split, the fastest 100 meter split in world history, to out-touch Bernard by .08 seconds and win the gold. Lezak’s come-from-behind swim also kept Michael Phelps’ historic quest for eight gold medals alive, which Phelps would eventually accomplish. Jason Lezak currently holds three World records, is a three time Olympian and has seven Olympic Medals. • 44Th Annual Leo Boivin International Midget AA/AAA Showcase
44th Annual Leo Boivin International Midget AA/AAA Showcase March , 2017 LEO BOIVIN This esteemed hockey showcase proudly carries the name of Prescott native, and NHL legend Leo Boivin. Leo Boivin began playing hockey at the age of seven on the St. Lawrence River and outdoor ice surfaces of Prescott, Ontario, near Ottawa. It was with the Bruins that Leo's reputation as a hard-hitting, defenseman grew. Tim Horton regarded him to be the toughest blue liner to beat in a one-on-one situation. He was nicknamed "Fireplug" for his compact stature and devastating body checks. Although there were bigger men on the blue line, especially closer the end of his career, none hit harder than Leo Boivin. After retiring, he stayed in the game as a scout. He went behind the bench as the interim coach of the St. Louis Blues during the 1975-76 and 1977-78 seasons, and coached the Ottawa 67's of the OHL for a time, but at the end of the day he preferred scouting to coaching. Leo Boivin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986. Nowadays, Leo can be found at the arena named after him during the tournament weekend, smiling for photos with fans and enjoying great Midget hockey. Be sure to say hello! HISTORY Now in its 44th year, this tournament has come a long way from the eight team one-day event first started in 1972 to the current 16 team tournament that welcomes the world! This tournament has set the standard, with its reputation for hospitality and excellent organization.
