COVID-19 Relief and Rehabilitation

RR64, 30 June 2020 http://www.ciicovid19update.in

Introduction COVID-19 has been declared as a global pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO) and identified as a ‘Notified Disaster’ by Ministry of Home Affairs. COVID- 19 has severely disrupted lives and economies across the globe. This has tested public health preparedness to the optimum level even in developed countries who are still struggling to deal with the situation. Government of India announced a ‘lockdown’ in March across the country and advised citizens to maintain social distancing to check spread of the disease. With economic activities under suspension, and cases of COVID-19 increasing, a humanitarian challenge is unfolding day by day. People at the bottom of the pyramid, especially, the migrant workers in cities, factory workers, daily wage earners, farm laborers, etc. are the worst affected and struggling to arrange daily essentials such as food and medicine. CII is extending all possible support to the affected people during times of such crisis. The Relief and Rehabilitation Interventions of CII include awareness building regarding the best hygiene practices, importance of handwashing and social distancing, and distribution of Personal Protective Equipment, Hygiene kits, Ration kits and other daily essentials among vulnerable communities.

However, food eventually became a luxury which everyone couldn’t afford. After consuming all our savings, we were helpless with no means to survive. We planned to go back to our native place in Bihar by cycle without our luggage. Some locals helped for a few days, but they couldn’t feed us for long. The support provided to us by PepsiCo India and CII Foundation helped us immensely. We now have a month’s ration available with which we can sustain ourselves during the lockdown.
