BEAR FACTS / Q1 2015 13 pol.pca.org Courtesy of Porsche Centre Edmonton, I at- tended the 2015 Porsche Camp4 winter driving experience at Circuit Mecaglisse, near Estérel, Quebec, February 6-9, 2015. The Camp4 driving experience originally started in Finland and for the last four years has also been offered in Canada. The introductory level is Camp4, and 2015 then drivers can return for Camp4S, and finally Camp4 RS. In Europe they offer even higher levels of instruction.

I took the red-eye flight so that I could get into Montreal before the Friday afternoon rush Porsche hour, and so that I could enjoy the hour and a half drive north to Estérel during daylight.

The GPS on my rented BMW guided me with- out incident to the Estérel Resort, a two-hotel Camp4 complex on the shore of Lac Dupuis. The hotel is modern and well-appointed. After check in to the hotel, I registered for the Camp4 and attended the welcome dinner Friday evening. Article and event pictures provided by All participants are assigned to one of four run Bill McCay, recipient of the Polar Region’s 25th groups of ten drivers each. I wondered who the other participants would be, and as it turns out, Anniversary Grand Prize generously provided by they were much like the members of Polar Re- Porsche Centre Edmonton. gion—friendly, enthusiastic car guys (and gals). Our group was a bit unusual in that 6 members were from Mexico, and I was able to try out my Spanish. Many had never experienced the Ca- nadian winter, or even snow. We were seated together, and with the wine and great food (all included) we were fast friends.

After breakfast the next morning, we had a driver briefing and headed out to the bus for our half hour trip to Mecaglisse. There, we met our instructors and hostesses. One instructor is provided per run group, standing on course with a radio, giving instruction and feedback as we did a variety of exercises. The hostesses were there to help with staging the cars, and as enthusiastic cheerleaders.

The Mecaglisse facility is built on a spent gravel pit, in the Laurentian Mountains. There are six separate track areas, which can be combined for different configurations, such as small and large skid pads, road ways, slaloms, and road courses with elevation changes. All are cov- ered in ice, with the snow plowed to the sides. There had been an abundance of fresh snow prior to our arrival which, combined with the cold temperatures (-20 to -15C) provided a for- giving barrier for any off-course mishaps. When not hosting the Camp4 events (which run for photo courtesy of Porsche Cars North America the entire month of February) the track is used

BEAR FACTS / Q1 2015 14 pol.pca.org for tire testing, manufacturer testing, or corporate events in the winter and rally instruction in the summer. Our instructor, Franck Kirschoff, is one of the owners, and is an experienced rally driver.

During the two days of driving at Camp4, we alternated between the Cayman S, Carrera S, and Carrera 4S cars equipped with Nokian Hak- kapeliitta studded tires, in a variety of exercises to learn how to induce and recover from understeer and oversteer skids, and how to rotate the cars with throttle and steering inputs, trailbrak- ing, and the `rally flick’ maneuver. Cay- enne diesels were there to tow us out of the snow banks when we screwed up, and every one of our group had to get towed at least once.

A comfortable chalet is on site, with coffee, snacks, and a catered lunch is provided. The event was very well organized and all the staff was friendly and very well qualified. At the end of our driving days we were treated to excellent meals at the hotel and a local restaurant, with plenty of good wine.

Of all the cars, I was immediately more comfortable in the Carrera S and the Cayman, as they are 2WD, and I grew up in Alberta driving rear wheel drive vehicles in winter for most of my life. However, by the end of the second day, I was getting better at using the impressive capabilities of the Carrera 4S`s sophisticated AWD system.

The highlights of my time were when I rode along with the instructors—once when Franck did a lap of the skidpad, drifting the C4S using throttle inputs only (hands off the wheel!), the other when lead instructor Jonathan took me on a lap of the road course in the Macan Turbo. The capability of these vehicles is incredible in the hands of a good driver.

Thanks again to Porsche Centre Ed- monton for a very generous donation for our 25th anniversary Grand Prize draw. I think I will come back next year for the Camp4S event.

If you read the article in this issue on Auto Obsessed, you will know that as part of an upcoming Tech Session we will be discussing options and demonstrating upgraded cars so you can see and hear what can be done (location and timing details are at the bottom of this article). All of my installations were done by FX Audio, a premier supplier and installer of automotive audio equipment, built in radar detectors, and remote starters that came highly recommended – and Figure 1 the transformations were exceptionally well done. Although the examples we will discuss are for water-cooled Porsches, there are similar solutions for air-cooled Porsches as well. The Basic The most basic upgrade we did was to a 2004 GT3.
