(p řepis stru čného životopisu Otto Katze, který byl po řízen v roce 1981 pracovníky archivu KS Č p ři zakládání fondu osobní poz ůstalosti popraveného a rehabilitovaného Katze, viz P říloha č. 1, pozn. OK) 4 1 b.

Where nobody knows your nameBy PatrickA very informative read about one of the most consequential people of the twentieth century, of whom almost no one has ever heard. Along with his erstwhile boss Willi Muenzenberg, Katz planted the seeds for an attitude that still prevails today to one degree or another, about the benignity of socialism.Muenzenberg was Lenin's (and later Stalin's) master propagandist, who set out to make it, in Western intellectual circles, the mark of an intelligent, informed and decent person to be favorably disposed to the Soviet Union and anything that served the foreign policy goals of the USSR. To that end he established an empire which included newspapers, magazines, movies and books, first from Berlin and then Paris. One day in Germany, Muenzenberg met Otto Katz, who was from a family of prosperous Czechoslovakian Jews.

Stalin’s Agent is a biography of one of Stalin’s illegals who was known by the alias of Alexander Orlov (1895–1973). Orlov entered the history of Soviet espionage primarily due to three reasons: First, he was credited with presiding over the shipment of 500 tons of Spainish gold reserve to Moscow in 1936, thus effectively stripping the country of her assets in exchange for limited supplies of military equipment to republican Spain. Second, in fear of being executed by his paranoid bosses, who cannibalized the Soviet secret services cadre during the 1937–9 Great Terror, Orlov brilliantly outmaneuvered Stalin’s agents and defected (along with his wife and daughter) to North America. Moreover, rather than leaving empty-handed, he took $68,000, the entire operational fund he stole from the Soviet station in Spain, in addition to $22,800 he claimed he had ‘saved’. With this nice chunk of cash (an equivalent of $1,500,000 in present money), Orlov lived quietly, laying low until 1953. Third, that same year when the Soviet dictator died, he again played his cards right, immediately ‘coming out of the closet’ and making a name for himself with a bestselling book The Secret History of Stalin's Crimes (1953).

  • Stalinism Revisited Stalinism Revisited
CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK Stalinism Revisited Stalinism Revisited Stalinism Revisited brings together representatives of multiple generations to create a rich examination The Establishment of Communist Regimes in East-Central Europe of the study and practice of Stalinism. While the articles are uniformly excellent, the book’s signal contribution is to bring recent research from Eastern European scholars to an English-speaking audience. Thus the volume is not just a “state of the discipline” collection, in which articles are collected to reflect that current situation of scholarship in a given field; instead, this one includes cutting edge scholarship that will prompt more of the same from other scholars in other fields/subfields. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in understanding the technology of Stalinism in both StalinismStalinism thought and practice. Nick Miller Boise State University The Sovietization of post-1945 East-Central Europe—marked by the forceful imposition of the Soviet- type society in the region—was a process of massive socio-political and cultural transformation. Despite its paramount importance for understanding the nature of the communist regime and its RevisitedRevisited legacy, the communist take-over in East Central European countries has remained largely under- researched. Two decades after the collapse of the communist system,Stalinism Revisited brings together a remarkable international team of established and younger scholars, engaging them in a critical re-evaluation of the institutionalization of communist regimes in East-Central Europe and of the period of “high Stalinism.” Sovietization is approached not as a fully pre-determined, homogeneous, and monolithic transformation, but as a set of trans-national, multifaceted, and inter-related processes of large-scale institutional and ideological transfers, made up of multiple “takeovers” in various fields.

  • Brno Studies in English Volume 40, No. 2, 2014 ISSN 0524-6881 HAŠEK, ŠVEJK and the POLES It Might at First Seem Strange That
Brno Studies in English Volume 40, No. 2, 2014 ISSN 0524-6881 DOI: 10.5817/BSE2014-2-3 CHRISTIE DAVIES Hašek, šVEJK AND THE POLES Abstract The Good Soldier Švejk is often seen as an anti-war book satirising militarism. It is not. It is a consistent piece of fierce and ribald mockery of all those nations and bureaucratic institutions who had stood in the way of Czech nationalism and independence. By chance the Poles happened to be one of these nations. For Hašek and many of his Czech contemporaries the Poles were the very antithesis of the Czechs. During World War I nationally-conscious Czechs hoped that the Orthodox Russians would rescue them from oppression by the Roman Catholic Austrians; the intensely Catholic Poles hoped for exactly the opposite. The Poles revered their aristocrats and their Church whilst the Czechs were egalitarian individualists, a tradition which Masaryk saw as Hussite in its origins. Czech identity was born in those proto-Protestant times and crushed by the Catholic Hapsburgs as part of the Counter-Reformation. This is one reason why there is such savage mockery of individual Poles as soldiers, aristocrats and priests in Hašek’s work. The Poles stood for hierarchical forms of social order that Hašek, an anarchic Czech nationalist, detested and which he attacked with an often ob- scene and scatological humour, particularly the Roman Catholic Church. Key words Humour; mockery; pollution; Austro-Hungary; T. G. Masaryk; Catholics; aris- tocrats; Jaroslav Hašek; Švejk; Poles It might at first seem strange that a study of Švejk and Hašek should be de- voted to a detailed account of their relations with the Poles.

It is true that storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it, that it brings about consent and reconciliation with things as they really are, and that we may even trust it to contain eventually by implication that last word which we expect from the Day of Judgment. Because this is the first attempt (to my knowledge) at constructing such a listing. And because of a hope that others may smooth out the bumps over time. Whilst, of course, making selective use of it in their own work.1 This list was initially dependent on my own autobio (Waterman 2014), my personal three metres plus of autobios, and therefore excessively weighted towards the Communism of my early years, the internationalism(s) of all my years.

  • The Brown Book of the Reichstag Fire and Hitler Terror
Staging Antifascism: The Brown Book of the Reichstag Fire and Hitler Terror Anson Rabinbach The Brown Book of the Reichstag Fire and Hitler Terror, published in Paris in August 1933, was more than a book. It was a staged event and the center of an international campaign that convinced much of the world that the Nazis had conspired to burn the Reichstag as the pretext to establishing a dictator- ship. The campaign around the Brown Book and the trial of Georgi Dimitrov and the other defendants in Leipzig from September to December 1933 was so skillfully managed that it persuaded many observers outside Germany as well as reputable historians until the 1960s that the fire was the work of a Nazi conspiracy.1 Not until 1959–60, when the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel published a five-part series based on the research of the nonacademic historian Fritz Tobias, were the Brown Book’s falsifications and misrepre- sentations exposed. A few years later most professional historians were per- suaded that Tobias’s research was sound—the Brown Book had been discred- ited (at least in the Federal Republic of Germany), and the thesis of a “lone” arsonist widely accepted. During the past three decades a number of chal- lenges to the details presented in Tobias’s research have been mounted, though 1. In his biography of Hitler, Konrad Heiden wrote, “It may be assumed that the incendiaries were close to the National Socialists, but their identity and methods have remained unknown” (Der Fuehrer: Hitler’s Rise to Power, trans. Ralph Manheim [Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1944], 559).
