Dear Patriotic Members and Friends,

As we begin the New Year of 2013 I wish everyone the best and may all your wishes be attained. We had a magnificently successful 2012 and in this edition you can review our activities accomplished with the help of you all. We again were commended with awards for increasing Membership, CommunityInvolve-ment/Caring for America and Literacy thanks to your diligence and hard work. Countless hours were spent at precincts, G.O.P. and candidate headquarters. Although several of our candidates were defeated, our efforts in 2013 must remain focused on our mission of electing Republicans locally and nationally.

Our aim this year must be to engage and educate the high school and college students in our midst to learn the words on our coins: Liberty, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust and our Constitution have special meaning to us as citizens. We must uphold the rights these words imply. The Charlotte Mousel Scholarship is an opportunity for high school juniors or seniors to participate by writing an essay on “What the Constitution means to me”. Please contact me for further information. Our plans for later this year will include young people in numerous ways.

Please join us on Wednesday, February 6th at the North Ranch Country Club at 5:00 P.M. for an excellent chance to meet other members and guests and meet and hear Lt. Col. Steven Chealander relate his stories as military aide for President .

The support of our military is still very important. On the rear cover find information how everyone can support our troops and veterans. I know we are all so appreciative of the sacrifice these men and women serving as well as their families. Think about perhaps hosting a spouse to a meeting, giving moral support, or help each in your own way. We have many spouses in this area who could use a phone call, or words of encouragement . We will be having opportunities to support these brave people. Consider lending your talent to one of our committees. Time given for purposeful, meaningful causes helps keep us ‘healthy.’

Thank you for continuing to support T.O.R.W.F. Please renew and perhaps bring others to our events. We love meeting new people.

My best to you,

Beatrice Restifo

President

Keeping our theme “SOARING LIKE AN EAGLE WITH NEW VISION” in 2011 with many accomplishments including NFRW awarding TORWF the Diamond award, the CFRW awarding the Membership and Newsletter Awards, TORWF maintained our high quality programs and events which brought our attendance to record highs for both years.

One of the most impressive events was our INTERNATIONAL RONALD REAGAN CENTENNIAL elegant celebration luncheon held at the prestigious, private Regency Club on Wilshire Boulevard, , with twenty Consuls General from countries around the world where President Reagan made an impact ; U.S. State Department representative; Michael Reagan; and overflowing attendance. Reverend Doctor Gary Alan Dickey led us from the eighteenth floor reception to the terrace overlooking Beverly Hills while regaling us with his wonderful bagpipe sounds for the release of fifty white doves for peace. We then followed the bagpipe sounds to the seventeenth floor Regency Dining Room for a special Regency luncheon and program. The address of the Dean of the Consular Corps was a highlight in which he declared much respect and admiration for President Ronald Reagan. Professor Robert G. Kaufman, Ph.D., of the School of Public Policy, Pepperdine University, spoke on President Reagan’s legacy and his effect on the world.

Professor Kaufman’s other lectures were “Two Visions of National Security”; “Ronald Reagan’s Doctrine vs Barack Obama’s” during 2011. In 2012 he gave a brilliant talk on “How To Elect A New President.”

One of our missions is to empower and showcase women who have achieved high quality accomplishments in their fields by presenting a ‘DYNAMIC WOMEN’S FORUM”. During 2011 Linda Livingston, PhD., Dean of the School of Business and Management, Pepperdine University, acted as moderator. We were very fortunate to have the Wisconsin’s Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch participate, the youngest woman to hold that office. Deanell Reese Tacha, the first woman Dean of the School of Law, Pepperdine University, and Hannah Grossman, M.D., the first woman Chief of staff at Los Robles Hospital, Thousand Oaks, Ca. completed the panel.

At our annual “Beacon of Light Awards” Gala Christmas/Holiday luncheon at the Sherwood Country club, Thousand Oaks we were honored to present Arizona Governor Janice K. Brewer with the “Beacon of Light” Americanism Award. Michael Reagan was awarded the “Beacon of Light” Freedom Award. Proceeds from a previous book signing by Michael Reagan were presented to Mr. Reagan to support his Reagan Legacy Foundation, which provides scholarships to U.S. Navy staff on duty on the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Aircraft Carrier and their families. Edward Francis was awarded the “Beacon of Light” Humanitarian Award for philanthropy and founding the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic where students are given a venue to appear before a professional symphonic orchestra. This event surpassed any other attendance this year. We began 2012 with Round Table Discussion at evening dinner at the North Ranch country Club with the great conservative advocate Andrew Breitbart. His talk was extremely effective and informative energizing the audience about the upcoming election and how each person should become involved. We were saddened two weeks later to learn of Andrew’s unexpected and untimely death. We miss him dearly and will dedicate our 2012 Gala Christmas/Holiday Luncheon in his honor.

At our March 2012 Membership-Political Reception at the Licata Lounge, Civic arts Plaza, we were honored to have Fredrick Alexander as stand in for George Washington representing the spirit of the “Founders” in a moving talk about the dire straits of our Republic today and what has to be done to save our nation. Many candidates for Republican offices attended.

3 Looking Back to 2011 and 2012

We believe in supporting our youth and including them in some of our meetings. At our April dinner meeting “YOUTH APPRECIATION DAY” hosted eighteen high school students most of whom would be eighteen years old by November 6th when they would be eligible to vote. Those eligible registered and will be voting November 6th for the first time. The Banquet Manager, who is Hispanic, at the Westlake Village Inn, where the meeting took place, had just become a U.S. citizen and registered to vote for the first time. Delores Chavez Harms. CFRW Southern Division Hispanic Outreach Chair spoke on “How To Encourage Hispanics To vote Republican.” Copies of the “Red Book”- Democrats and Republicans Contrasted were made available in English and Spanish for wide distribution.

The June 2012 exceptional luncheon meeting, “Secrets of the Secret Service” featuring Joseph Beaty, Executive Special Agent in Charge of Los Angeles Office. His anecdotes of his service to many presidents kept everyone in rapt attention with many requests for his return.

July 2012 evening reception at the Four Seasons Hotel when we were extremely fortunate to hear Ben Shapiro., dear friend of Andrew Breitbart, now Editor-at-Large for Breitbart News and radio commentator on 870 AM KRLA, 6:00 to 9:00 A.M. spoke on “Defending Liberty.” He spoke again at the September 2012 meeting with an inspiring talk on the Romney-Ryan ticket. The screening of “THE CONSERVATIVES” film by prize winning film maker, producer Stephen K. Bannon and the Young America’s Foundation was an exceptional presentation aimed at young voters and general public.

Two exhilarating events in October excited the members and guests. First on October 12th at the Westlake Village Inn, Wine Cellar, reception began with Caring For America event. Battalion Commander Stephen J. Ruda, Public Safety Section, Fire Prevention Bureau, L.A. Fire Department was presented with a commendation for superb attention to his duty of protecting the public safety as well as a $500.00 check for the L.A. Fireman’s Widow and Orphan Fund. Bruce Herschensohn, Professor at the school of Public Policy, Pepperdine University, spoke on his book “OBAMA’S GLOBE”- A President’s Abandonment of U.S. Allies Around the World.” He captured the audience with his insights and knowledge.

The October 20,2012 Community Involvement event included forty T.O.R.W.F. members and guests plus seventeen students from California Lutheran University from several foreign countries attended the Cabrillo Theater’s presentation of “1776” at the Civic Arts Plaza. T.O.R.W.F. hosted a post performance reception for the members, guests, students and cast. Artistic director Lewis Wilkenfeld and many cast members attended. This was a fantastic evening for all while supporting the Cabrillo Theater.

The Gala Christmas/Holiday Luncheon and presentation of our annual “Beacon of Light Awards” at the Sherwood Country Club is always a spectacular event when Reverend Doctor Gary Alan Dickey leads us to the terrace with his bagpipes music for the annual dove release for peace, then to the holiday luncheon, program, Christmas Caroling, Christmas Market, and presentation of the “Beacon of Light Awards.” This year Michael Reagan, 2011 Beacon of Light recipient, presented the “Beacon of Light” Humanitarian Award to John L. Notter, financial director of the D.K.Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research around the world, and the Conrad Hilton Foundation, with funds for the homeless and other causes. Deanell Reese Tacha, the first woman Duane and Kelly Roberts Dean and Professor of Law at Pepperdine University School of Law, received the “Beacon of Light” Americanism Award. Michael Reagan was presented a check for continued support for The Reagan Legacy Foundation. This Gala was dedicated to the memory of Andrew Breitbart, a gallant conservative warrior, for all his good work.

Americanism

DEFINITION OF DEMOCRACY About the time our original 13 states adopted their new Constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the Athenian Republic some 2000 years prior: A democracy is always temporary in nature: it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the World’s greatest civilization from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence. 1. From bondage to spiritual growth 5. From abundance to complacency 2. From spiritual growth to great courage 6. From complacency to apathy 3. From great courage to liberty 7. From apathy to dependence 4. From liberty to abundance 8. From apathy back to bondage Professor Joseph Olson of Hamlin University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota, believes that the United States is now somewhere between the complacency and apathy phase on Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the Nation’s population already having reached the ‘government dependency’ phase.

5 Christmas-Holiday Gala 2012

This was an elegant, festive event with many facets. The day started with an overflowing crowd of more than 200 attendees for a reception in the Conservatory of the Sherwood Country Club. There was much excitement: Dickens Carolers, elegant boutiques, Michael Reagan once again graciously doing a “book signing.” Our guests loved speaking with him as he is so personable with many stories to relate. Our “Beacon of Light” awardees enjoyed meeting our guests during the reception before Doctor Reverend Gary Alan Dickey, dressed in his kilts, playing his bagpipes, led our guests to the terrace for our annual “dove release” for peace. Our “Beacon of Light” Americanism awardee, Dean Deanell Reese Tacha, and “Beacon of Light Humanitarian awardee, John L. Notter, each released a dove. The others (fifty in all) followed circling overhead many times in the beautiful blue sky, a spectacular sight, while in the background we heard the original, dramatic musical rendition of Albert Darakjian’s “Wings of the Eagle.” Rosemary Licata introducing the “Beacon of Light” - We followed Dr. Dickey’s bagpipes sounds into the Americanism Award. Michael Reagan, 2011 “Beacon festive Christmas Dining Room for our luncheon of Light”- Freedom Award recipient, administering and program. While enjoying our Sherwood the award to Dean Donell Reese Tacha. Holiday Luncheon our 2013 Executive Officers were installed by our dear friend District Attorney Gregory Totten. Many dignitaries were in attendance. We believe in showcasing accomplished leaders. This year we bestowed the “Beacon of Light” Americanism Award to Dean Deanell Reese Tacha, the first woman dean of the School of Law, Pepperdine University, who recently retired after twenty five years as judge, most recently at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the tenth circuit, appointed by President Ronald Reagan. The “Beacon of Light” Humanitarian Award was given to John L. Notter for his extensive cancer research philanthropy, and other endeavors locally and around the world. Thank you to all who brought the hundreds of stuffed toys for the My Stuff Bag Foundation to help support abused children. Everyone enjoyed the magnificent day and the Christmas Holiday Spirit of the Sherwood Country Club. Rosemary Licata

7 The War of Sound Bites

Catherine Jayne, PhD (818) 665-6630 [email protected]

Democrats and President Obama are waging a highly sucessful war of sound bites. They have persuaded many Americans that the wealthy do not “pay their fair share” of taxes, despite the fact that a very small percentage of taxpayers pay well over half of all individual income taxes. They tell us that “Wall Street” is against “Main Street.” They have demonized the “1%.” They have convinced millions that the system is stacked against them and that they need big government to get ahead.

While their sound bites are effective, the arguments backing them are farcical. Obama claims he wants to pay more in taxes and doesn’t understand why many upper income earners don’t feel the same way. But most of America’s wealthy, and Americans in general, are nothing like Obama. He hasn’t worked for years developing a business that he needs to pour his excess cash back into to survive the competition. He does not have to meet payroll at the end of the month before he pays himself a salary. Most businesses are at the whim of economic cycles. As President of the United States, Obama has joined an elite circle who will always hold huge earning power almost regardless of how the economy is doing.

Obama also recently called his tax-the-rich agenda the “new economic patriotism.” America’s last respectable call for patriotic tax increases occurred during World War II when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor triggered a willingness among Americans to sacrifice. Today our bloated government and years of reckless spending inspire little more than disdain for our leaders. Most importantly, Americans don’t need prompting for true patriotism, a most recent example of which was the Benghazi crisis in which four brave Americans lost their lives. Obama spent more effort dodging the embarassing political fallout than getting to the truth of how and why these four heroes died.

In making his most common argument for wealth redistribution - fairness - Obama is highly hypocritical. Days before the fiscal cliff deal, he signed an executive order granting pay raises for all federal employees, including Congress. It was largely the profligacy of this Congress and the President which led to the downgrades of America’s credit rating, the first in the nation’s history. What could possibly be fair about a Congressional pay raise on the one hand and, on the other, tax hikes on America’s job creators in the private sector who, for the most part, have to achieve real results to get an increase in their earnings? Obama’s hypocrisy is sending the message to America that it is not necessary to earn what you get. His goal is clearly not just new economic patriotism. It’s also America, reinvented, what leftists have been after since the dawn of Marxism.

America is hardly in need of reinvention. Our system of government has been responsible for more wealth creation and freedom than any throughout history. While Obama’s ideas are not new, the progress they are making in America is. Obama has seized control of the political narrative and cast Republicans as the party of the rich who would raise taxes on the middle class before they would call on the wealthy to shoulder more of the burden. In doing so, he is winning the war of sound bites. The Republican party is not the party of the wealthy. It is the party that rejects government dependency and embraces those who believe in the American Dream and the individual’s ability to make it a reality. We’re the party of individualism, the American Dream and freedom - sound bites that need to take hold before it’s too late.

“It is the natural course of events that liberty recedes and government grows.” Thomas Jefferson
