For Immediate Release Contact: May 13, 2011 Hannah Strickland 202-407-8577 [email protected] 2011 Men’s and Women’s Tewaaraton Finalists Announced Award Celebrates Eleven Year Anniversary on June 2nd Washington, D.C. – The Greater Washington Sports Alliance and The University Club of Washington, DC are proud to announce the 2011 Men’s and Women’s Tewaaraton Finalists. The Tewaaraton Award is presented to the most outstanding men’s and women’s collegiate lacrosse player as determined by two selection committees, consisting of collegiate coaches throughout all divisions of the sport. The selection process began with a list of over 100 of the nation’s top men’s and women’s collegiate players, which was then narrowed down to a selective list of more than 50. Of these, ten have been named as finalists, five men and five women, of which only two will be able to walk away with the sport’s top honor. “I truly believe that each of these finalists has showcased the ability to step forward and claim the Tewaaraton Award as their own this year. As I have stated throughout the season, the selection committees have done an extraordinary job at selecting the top contenders battling for this year’s award. Everyone is welcome to come out and see which of these finalist has stepped forward to claim their place in history at the June 2nd Award Ceremony” stated Robert Sweeney, President of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. From the NYTimes on Lacrosse Scholarships The Lax Track By ABIGAIL SULLIVAN MOORE IT is a blistering week in July, and thousands of girls and scores of college coaches pour into Love Point Park in Stevensville, Md., for the annual All Star Express. The tournament, a four-day extravaganza of athleticism and ambition, is billed as the recruiting event of the year for women's college lacrosse (lax, for short). Tractor-powered trams lug spectators to 12 fields marked off by huge helium balloons. In the middle is a corridor of vendors hawking chocolate chip cookies, lacrosse gear, preppy ribbon belts and hot-pink and lime-green flip-flops adorned with mini-lacrosse sticks. On Thursday and Friday, middle school and younger high school girls play. On the weekend, when 55 teams of seniors compete in up to seven games a day, the crowd swells to at least 12,000. Tournaments like this represent the latest, strangest chapter in the history of lacrosse. Originated centuries ago by American Indians, it is now one of the fastest-growing sports among high school students. Once played mostly in New England prep schools and other pockets in the East, the game has spread wildly through suburbs nationwide. In towns where weekends are spent carting children to athletic events and the names of top-tier colleges are stenciled on car windows, families see lacrosse as an opportunity for their sons and daughters to shine in the equally competitive arenas of college admissions and athletic scholarships. Many parents figure that, compared with soccer, basketball and football, lacrosse offers less rivalry for spots on college teams. -

Greg Lindberg: Welcome to another edition of the Saint Leo 360 Podcast. My name is Greg Lindberg. And on this particular episode, I'm pleased to be joined by a guest star from athletics. His name is Brad Jorgensen and he is our head coach of the men's lacrosse team here at Saint Leo University. Brad, thank you so much for joining us. Brad Jorgensen: Absolutely. Thanks for having me. I look forward to it. Greg Lindberg: Definitely. This is going to be fun. So first off, I do want to just get into your background a little bit and then talk about how you came to Saint Leo, and I know you've been here quite a while now. Brad Jorgensen: Sure. Greg Lindberg: So we definitely have a lot to chat it out as far as your time here. So first of all, Brad, talk to me about where you grew up and where you're actually from and all that good stuff. Brad Jorgensen: Sure. I grew up in a town called the Simsbury, Connecticut. It's north of Hartford by about 20 minutes, almost to the Massachusetts border. Spent most of my life in Northern Connecticut and Western Massachusetts before heading out to the Boston area after a couple of years as an assistant coach in Western Massachusetts. And from Eastern Massachusetts in the Boston area, I headed on down here. -

Transforming the NCAA DI Model
“Transforming the NCAA D-I Model” Summary of First Three Sessions The Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics held three public sessions of its four-part series, “Transforming the NCAA D-I Model,” in September and October 2020. The three previous webinars reviewed critical challenges to D-I college sports, including the state of athletics finances, an analysis of national revenue distributions from marquee championships, and the views of Division I leaders on problems and remedies for strengthening college athletics. The complete set of research documents, slide presentations, and session videos can be found here. In addition, the Knight Commission advanced recommendations in April 2020 to guide the emerging field of college athletes’ use of their name, image, and likeness, with the Commission recommending that athletes be allowed to earn compensation for their NIL rights from sources other than their institutions. The fourth and culminating session of this year-long study will take place on December 3, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. ET, when the Knight Commission announces its recommendations for reshaping the governance of NCAA Division I sports. Overview The first three sessions of “Transforming the NCAA D-I Model” built upon the Knight Commission’s three decades of work in college sports, bolstered by four new research projects: Ø A groundbreaking Knight Commission survey of D-I college athletics leaders (primarily presidents, directors of athletics, and conference commissioners) fielded between June 18 and July 14, 2020; Ø A novel analysis of the NCAA’s revenue distribution plan by an independent national professional services firm, CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA); Ø Updated institutional financial data on sports revenues and eXpenditures from the Commission’s College Athletics Financial Information (CAFI) database; and Ø A scholarly review of academic and legal literature on D-I structural reform published over the past decade. -

Before such an event can take place, what is needed is a realistic budget, a careful marketing strategy keeping in mind the ten P’s, a plan to motivate employees, a safe environment for spectators and participants, and an ethical framework for team preparation limits. -
