NCAA Initial Eligibility Case Study - • Possible reasons: – He didn’t meet the course specific requirements (4 English, 3 Math, 2 Science, 1 additional Eng-Math-Sci, 2 Social Science, 4 additional core) – One of the 16 that he and his counselor thought was a core course had not been approved by the NCAA – Didn’t graduate on time, repeated a grade • Can this be fixed? – Most likely….can take one additional core in the summer; get the course approved by the NCAA; file a waiver if there’s precedent Other Options – Two Year Colleges 2-4 Transfer Qualifier 1. Spent at least one Full-Time semester or quarter at the 2-year college 2. Transfer GPA of 2.500 or better 3. Completed an average of 12 semester or quarter hours of transferrable- degree credit acceptable toward a degree program at SU for each Full-Time term of attendance 4. Meet applicable PTD requirements at certifying institution Non-Qualifier 1. Graduated from the 2-year college 2. Completed a minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter hours of transferrable- degree credit acceptable toward a degree program at SU; including: 6 semester or 8 quarter hours of transferrable English 3 semester or 4 quarter hours of transferrable Math 3 semester or 4 quarter hours of transferrable Natural/Physical Science 3. Attended the 2-year college Full-Time for at least 3 semesters or 4 quarters (excluding summer terms) 4. Minimum transfer GPA of 2.500 Other Options – Division III Division III Academic Standards Division III schools provide an integrated environment focusing on academic success while offering a competitive athletics environment. Division III rules minimize potential conflicts between athletics and academics and focus on regional in-season and conference play. While Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships, 75 percent of Division III student-athletes receive some form of merit or need-based financial aid. If you are planning to attend a Division III school, you do not need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Division III schools set their own admissions and eligibility standards. You can visit NCAA.org/d3 or contact the Division III school you are planning to attend. Other Options – NAIA NAIA regulations •If you will graduate from a U.S. high school this spring and enroll in college this coming fall, the requirements are simple. An entering freshman must: – Be a graduate of an accredited high school or be accepted as a regular student in good standing as defined by the enrolling institution and – Meet two of the three following requirements. If as an entering freshman you do not meet at least two of the three standards, you cannot participate in athletics for the first full year of attendance (2 semesters, 3 quarters, or equivalent). • 960 SAT • Achieve a 2.0 GPA • Graduate in top half of your class • Coaches’ Involvement with Academics • Be educated on Admissions Standards & NCAA Initial Eligibility Requirements. • Understand 16 core class requirements & the NCAA sliding scale. • Know both academic eligibility and amateurism eligibility. • Be “hands on” in following up with your student-athletes regarding academic progress each semester. • Emphasize Freshman – Senior progression. • Ask questions about the admissions process/deadlines. • Guard against Senioritis and “downward trends”. • Stress “best effort” EVERY time your student-athlete takes the SAT/ACT. • Call any school’s academic or compliance department if you have questions.
