ComEd Corporate History
In 1887, Chicago Edison Company incorporated with capitalization of $500,000 to develop an incandescent-light business in Chicago. Led by then President Samuel Insull, Edison began service with a maximum load of 313 kilowatts, generated from the company's three-story building on West Adams near downtown.
On September 17, 1907, Chicago Edison Co. and Commonwealth Electric Light and Power Co. formally merged to create Commonwealth Edison Co., Inc. ("ComEd"). Over the next thirty years ComEd experienced rapid growth with the installation of its millionth meter in the new Chicago Daily News Building and the 1913 merger with south side utility, Cosmopolitan Electric.
In 1949, ComEd received a 42-year franchise as the exclusive supplier of electricity to Chicago. The following year, the company announced the study of nuclear power, culminating in 1960 with construction of the world's first full-scale, privately financed nuclear power plant, Dresden Station.
In 1994, ComEd became part of newly formed parent company Unicom; Unicom then announced a merger with Philadelphia-based PECO Energy Co. in 1999. Upon completion of the merger the new parent company took the name Exelon Corporation.
On March 12, 2012, ComEd’s parent company, Exelon, completed its merger with Constellation Energy.
On March 23, 2016 ComEd’s parent company, Exelon, completed its merger with Pepco Holdings. The merger brought together Exelon’s three (3) electric and gas utilities — BGE, ComEd and PECO — and Pepco Holdings’ three (3) electric and gas utilities — Atlantic City Electric, Delmarva Power and Pepco.
Currently, ComEd operates as a standalone organization of Chicago-based Exelon. ComEd and its more than 6,100 employees are responsible for maintaining more than 100,000 circuit miles of power lines which deliver electricity to approximately 4 million customers. Today ComEd is engaged principally in the purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to a diverse base of residential, commercial, industrial and wholesale customers in northern Illinois. All of ComEd's energy generation assets were either sold to third parties (i.e., Midwest Generation) or transferred to Exelon subsidiary Exelon Generation between 1996 and 2001.
