The new IUCN Red List criteria have been revised by IUCN to reflect the need for greater objectivity and precision when categorising species for conservation action. The CAMP process, developed by the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, has emerged as an effective, flexible, participatory and scientific methodology for conducting species prioritisation exercises using the IUCN criteria. Since 1995, the Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions has been con- ducting CAMP Workshops for one of the major groups of conservation concern, medici- nal plants. -

Abstract Coastal regions of Karnataka and Kerala are well known for richness of native or indigenous plant species of ethnic value to meet the nutritional requirements. Approaches of nutritional use of native plant resources differ between geographic as well as ethnic groups. Based on folk knowledge, the present study deals with 19 plant species (in 17 genera and 16 families) used mainly for nutritional purpose. Various parts of plants used, seasonal availability and preparation of traditional dishes with brief account of medicinal value are discussed. Modern lifestyle seems to overlook indigenous knowledge and strength of native plant species in human nutrition. In depth scientific investigations will decipher nutritional versatility, unique formulations, value additions and industrial potential of indigenous plant species. Taxonomy and Conservation Status of Pteridophyte Flora of Sri Lanka R.H.G. Ranil and D.K.N.G. Pushpakumara University of Peradeniya Introduction The recorded history of exploration of pteridophytes in Sri Lanka dates back to 1672-1675 when Poul Hermann had collected a few fern specimens which were first described by Linneus (1747) in Flora Zeylanica. The majority of Sri Lankan pteridophytes have been collected in the 19th century during the British period and some of them have been published as catalogues and checklists. However, only Beddome (1863-1883) and Sledge (1950-1954) had conducted systematic studies and contributed significantly to today’s knowledge on taxonomy and diversity of Sri Lankan pteridophytes (Beddome, 1883; Sledge, 1982). Thereafter, Manton (1953) and Manton and Sledge (1954) reported chromosome numbers and some taxonomic issues of selected Sri Lankan Pteridophytes. Recently, Shaffer-Fehre (2006) has edited the volume 15 of the revised handbook to the flora of Ceylon on pteridophyta (Fern and FernAllies). The local involvement of pteridological studies began with Abeywickrama (1956; 1964; 1978), Abeywickrama and Dassanayake (1956); and Abeywickrama and De Fonseka, (1975) with the preparations of checklists of pteridophytes and description of some fern families. Dassanayake (1964), Jayasekara (1996), Jayasekara et al., (1996), Dhanasekera (undated), Fenando (2002), Herat and Rathnayake (2004) and Ranil et al., (2004; 2005; 2006) have also contributed to the present knowledge on Pteridophytes in Sri Lanka. However, only recently, Ranil and co workers initiated a detailed study on biology, ecology and variation of tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) in Kanneliya and Sinharaja MAB reserves combining field and laboratory studies and also taxonomic studies on island-wide Sri Lankan fern flora. -

Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, U.P., India 3Department of Pharmacy, Devsthali Vidyapeeth College of Pharmacy, Rudrapur, U.K., India Received: 10 July 2018 Revised: 2 August 2018 Accepted: 15 August 2018 Abstract Madhuca longifolia is also called Mahua or butternut tree, belonging to sapotaceae family. It is about 17m in height. Madhuca longifolia is an evergreen tree. It is mostly found in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It is gifted with many chemical ingredients which are responsible for various medicinal properties. It consists of terpenoids, proteins, starch, anthraquinone glycosides, phenolic compounds, mucilage, cardiac glycosides, tannins and saponins. Leaves are also contained quercetin, β -carotene, erthrodiol, palmitic acid, myricetin, 3-O-arabionoside, 3-O-L-rhamnoside, quercitin, 3-galactoside, xanthophylls. The timber is used in construction of houses, cartwheels, doors. It is a good source for nitrogen fixation. Various parts of the tree are used as fodder for cattles, as fertilizer as intercrop. Leaves of mahua are used in the treatment of eczema, wound healing, antiburns, bone fracture, anthelminthic, emollient, skin disease, rheumatism and headache. The flowers are utilized as tonic, analgesic and diuretic; bark for rheumatism, chronic bronchitis and diabetes mellitus and leaves as expectorant and for chronic bronchitis and Cushing's disease. In this review we make a compilation focused on the synonyms, botanical description, phytochemicals, pharmacological activity and medicinal uses of Mahua. -

Although pentamery is widespread and probably the ancestral condition, some clades are extremely variable in merism, with fluctuations between tetramery to hexamery and octomery, affecting different floral organs to different degrees. We assessed the different states of merism in Sapotaceae to determine the evolution of this character among different clades. The floral morphology and development of nine species from eight genera were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, floral characters related to merism were mapped onto a phylogenetic tree to analyse the distribution and evolutionary significance of merism in the family. Developmental evidence shows that changes in merism are linked to a concerted multiplication of organs among whorls and an increase in whorls through the displacement of organs. Although pentamery is reconstructed as the ancestral condition, a reduction to tetramery or an increase to a higher merism (mainly hexamery or octomery) has evolved at least five times in the family. -

The analysis on endemism revealed that thirty four taxa are endemic to Western Ghats and at the same time, broad scale phytogeographical affinities of the riverine flora extend to African, Australian, Holarctic, Indo-Pacific and South American floristic kingdoms. -

Since the Jurassic, Sri Lanka has been subjected to remarkable tectonic changes, thus its flora could have been influenced by that of a number of nearby landmasses, as well giving Sri Lanka the potential to have played a wider role in the assemblage of floras elsewhere. Firstly, as Sri Lanka originated as a fragment of the supercontinent Gondwana, part of its flora may contain Gondwanan relict lineages.
