A New Ceratosaurian Theropod from the Early Cretaceous of Spain Filling the ceratosaur gap: A new ceratosaurian theropod from the Early Cretaceous of Spain Bárbara Sánchez-Hernández and Michael J. Benton Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (3), 2014: 581-600 doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.4202/app.2011.0144 Ceratosaurian theropods evolved in two bursts, first in the Middle and Late Jurassic and then in the Late Cretaceous, leaving a 20 Myr gap in the Early Cretaceous during which remains are rare. We describe here a new ceratosaurian theropod, Camarillasaurus cirugedae , from fluvial deposits of the Camarillas Formation (lower Barremian, Lower Cretaceous) of Camarillas, Teruel Province, NE Spain. The new theropod is represented by a collection of associated bones, including a tooth, a possible cervical vertebra, two sternal plates, the proximal part of a right tibia, a broken right scapulocoracoid, the incomplete sacrum, five caudal vertebrae, an isolated caudal neural arch, a chevron, an almost complete presacral rib and some fragments of vertebrae, ribs, and other elements. Camarillasaurus is differentiated from other theropods by the extreme depth of the tibia proximal end, and a deep longitudinal groove on the tibia. The new dinosaur is a ceratosaur, phylogenetically close to the base of the clade, and perhaps more derived than the Chinese basal ceratosaur Limusaurus. The new taxon is significant in the evolution of the ceratosaurian dinosaurs, being placed temporally between its more common Jurassic and mid-Upper Cretaceous relatives, and it is one of only a few from Laurasia. Key words: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Ceratosauria, Cretaceous, Teruel Province, Aragón, Spain. Bárbara Sánchez-Hernández [[email protected]] and Michael J. Here we provide an overview of 11 new dinosaur tracksites found during a fieldwork campaign in the year 2011. The majority of these tracksites (seven) preserve small- to medium-sized tridactyl tracks here assigned to indeterminate theropods. Only one footprint presents enough characters to classify it as Megalosauripus isp. Ornithopod tracks identified asCaririchnium isp. and Iguanodontipodidae indet.

  • ESTADO DE LAS INVESTIGACIONES SOBRE LOS VERTEBRADOS DEL JURASICO SUPERIOR Y CRETACICO INFERIOR DE GALVE (TERUEL)L J
Estudios Geol., 60: 179-202 (2004) ESTADO DE LAS INVESTIGACIONES SOBRE LOS VERTEBRADOS DEL JURASICO SUPERIOR y CRETACICO INFERIOR DE GALVE (TERUEL)l J. 1.

A revised chronostratigraphy of the Barremian-Early Albian sedimentary record of 21 the Maestrat Basin (E Iberian Peninsula) is provided based on a comprehensive synthesis of 22 previous biostratigrahic data, a new ammonoid finding and numerical ages derived from 23 87Sr/86Sr values measured on shells of rudists, oysters and brachiopods. The succession, which 24 comprises eight lithostratigraphic formations, is arranged into six major transgressive- 25 regressive sequences and plotted against numerical ages, geomagnetic polarity chrons, 26 ammonoid zones and the stratigraphic distribution of age-diagnostic ammonoids, orbitolinid 27 foraminifera and rudist bivalves. The oldest lithostratigraphic unit sampled, the marine 28 Artoles Formation, is Early to Late Barremian. Above, the dinosaur-bearing deposits of the 29 Morella Formation and its coastal to shallow-marine equivalent, the Cervera del Maestrat 30 Formation, are of Late Barremian age and span at least part of the Imerites giraudi ammonoid 31 zone.

C. Sweetman, D. M. Martill Palaeobiology Research Group, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, PO1 3QL, United Kingdom [email protected], [email protected] Received: 20/11/09 / Accepted: 30/06/10 Abstract Micropalaeontological processing of vertebrate-bearing horizons within the Early Cretaceous (Barremian) Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight, southern England, reveals a rare, but diverse assemblage of pterosaurs. Besides the previously known euorni- thocheiran Caulkicephalus, the new material demonstrates the presence of three species of istiodactylid, a ctenochasmatid, and a distinct form that cannot easily be placed in a higher taxon. This elevated diversity is in keeping with pterosaur diversity from other Early Cretaceous localities, having some similarities with assemblages from the Early Cretaceous of Brazil, China and Spain. The apparent absence of toothless forms in the Wessex Formation may represent a preservation bias or collecting artefact.

C/ Pedro Cerbuna 12. Universidad de Zaragoza. 50009 Zaragoza, Spain.
