Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -

Ellen Page earned a best-actress Academy Award nomination as the title character, an almost impossibly glib teenager whose support crew includes a best-friend beau (Michael Cera), a sym- pathetic dad (J.K. Simmons), bold stepmom (Allison Janney) and a seemingly ideal couple (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) looking to adopt. The movie comes in single- DVD, two-disc DVD and Blu- ray high-definition releases that include 11 deleted scenes, plus commentary with direc- tor Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, who won the Oscar for original screenplay. The two-disc set and Blu-ray disc also have digital copies of the film for portable media players and a handful of fea- turettes, among them seg- ments on Reitman and Cody. The Breretons of Cheshire Page 1 of 68 The Breretons of Cheshire, England Researched and Written by Faye Brereton-Goodwin, Ontario, Canada [email protected] Copyright © Faye Brereton-Goodwin 2001 (February 2018 revision) The Breretons of Cheshire Page 2 of 68 This history is part of a larger 2002 document, titled ‘In Search of My Ancestors” which I dedicated to my father Albert Lionel (Bert) Brereton who served in the Navy, during the First World War and as a Sergeant in the 3rd Canadian Infantry, Princess Patricia's Regiment, during the Second World War. He returned to Canada in 1945, on a hospital ship and died when I was eight years of age. Unable to learn about my Brereton ancestors from my father or his parents over the years I searched for links to the past; at times travelling to Brereton sites. My journey has been both fun and rewarding. On our first trip to England, in 1993, my husband Bob and I visited Royal Leamington Spa in England and saw the home of my Great Aunt Ina Glass at 2 Clarendon Crescent (my Grandmother Brereton- Smallwood also resided there until her death at the age of 101 years). We also visited Brereton Hall in Cheshire, England and met with the owners of the property Mary and Derrick Creigh. For many years, under their ownership Brereton Hall had functioned as a private girl’s school. However, by the 1990’s much updating was needed to continue as a school and the decision was made to return the hall to its original function, as a private residence. -

EXTRACTS FROM WHITCHURCH HERALD 1869-1901 19/6/1869 The annual tea meeting of the Horseman’s Green & Threapwood Temperance Societies took place on Wednesday lst at Knolton near Overton. At half past three a very pleasing site presented itself in the appearance of the members and friends of the Threapwood Band of Hope and Temperance Societies, they found a most beautiful tea laid out for them, provided by Mr and Mrs John Crewe of Horseman’s Green. The programme was gone through in a most pleasing style. Melody: Pure Water Be Mine. Recitation: Aw’m Sure He’s Drunk To-neet, Dialogue: The Teetotaller’s Reply. Song: Poor Child of the Drunkard. Recitation: The Suicide. Song: The Drunkards Child. Recitation: The Lips that Touch Liquor Shall Never Touch Mine. After which this very interesting meeting was brought to a close and everyone left for their respective homes highly delighted with the day’s enjoyment. 26/6/1869 (Report of another meeting on Wednesday in connection with the Threapwood Band of Hope Society) this was held at the farm of Mr Pierpoint, near the Sarn Bridge, a large number of friends assembled at the National School Room and from thence proceeded down Threapwood up Tallarn Green and thence back to the tent at Mr Pierpoint’s. Soon after 4 o’clock the company sat down to a most excellent tea provided by Mr Burroughs of Tallarn Green. The Chair was occupied by the Rev G L Whitehouse of Threapwood.
