Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -

Ellen Page earned a best-actress Academy Award nomination as the title character, an almost impossibly glib teenager whose support crew includes a best-friend beau (Michael Cera), a sym- pathetic dad (J.K. Simmons), bold stepmom (Allison Janney) and a seemingly ideal couple (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) looking to adopt. The movie comes in single- DVD, two-disc DVD and Blu- ray high-definition releases that include 11 deleted scenes, plus commentary with direc- tor Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, who won the Oscar for original screenplay. The two-disc set and Blu-ray disc also have digital copies of the film for portable media players and a handful of fea- turettes, among them seg- ments on Reitman and Cody. He rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he recorded the garage band classic "Gloria". His solo career began under the pop-hit oriented guidance of Bert Berns with the release of the hit single "Brown Eyed Girl" in 1967. -

Astral Weeks Chelsea Fernando ‘17.5 David Rome Prize 1 In 1688 the Swiss physician Johannes Hofer invented the term nostalgia from the Greek nostos, or “homecoming,” and algos, or “pain.” The word was used in his dissertation to describe “the sad mood originating from the desire for return to one's native land,” a condition also known as mal du Suisse after frequent reports of Swiss mercenaries in the lowlands of France and Italy succumbing to a melancholic longing for Alpine landscapes. Napoleon believed that the sentiments suffered by his soldiers upon hearing the Swiss milking song “Khue-Reyen” would lead them to desert or to commit suicide, and so declared its playing punishable by death. 2 Whether it was intentionally or by accident I’m not quite sure (the memory is cloudy now), but it was certainly my father who introduced me to Astral Weeks. It is either that he presented the CD to me with his own two hands on our front porch just as he was returning home, or that I found it independently while exploring his unpacked belongings after I’d followed him inside the house. At present I have a feeling that it was the latter—I most likely found the record amongst a slew of others that he’d brought home that day (maybe including Elvis Costello, Wilson Pickett, or Joan Armatrading) and gravitated to it simply because of its soothing cover art: a thick black border, deep purple lettering, fine silhouettes of small leaves overlapping the hazy image of a man with long auburn hair and a pale blue shirt. -
