PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

• Riff Types, Timekeeping Cymbals, and Time Feels in Contemporary Metal Music
Transcending Time (Feels): Riff Types, Timekeeping Cymbals, and Time Feels in Contemporary Metal Music Jose M. Garza, Jr. NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: hps://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.21.27.1/mto.21.27.1.garza.php KEYWORDS: heavy metal, rhythm and meter, time feels, riff, drums, cymbals, popular music, subgenres ABSTRACT: Over the past fifteen years, much of the music-theoretical scholarship on heavy metal has addressed metric processes (Lucas 2019, Capuzzo 2018, Hannan 2018, Lucas 2018, Lennard 2016, Smialek 2008, Pieslak 2007) and the use of the voice (Smialek 2017, Young 2018). A significant portion of the literature deals with the band Meshuggah, but the music of countless artists scaered across manifold subgenres remains unexplored. Widening the focus on such a large repertoire not only helps remedy this issue, but serves to inform one recent music-theoretical topic that relies on a broad stylistic understanding: time feels. To date, scholars have mainly limited the discussion of time feels to the kick and snare drums (e.g., de Clercq 2016), and indeed, these instruments ultimately determine a feel. I argue, however, that different uses of guitar, bass, and cymbals can reinforce, clarify, or contradict the feel laid down by the kick and snare. In this article, I describe several categories of guitar and bass riff types and timekeeping cymbals. I then discuss how their associations with certain time-feel contexts inform further analyses. To this end, I draw from post- millennial metal music in various subgenres including black metal, death metal, doom metal, grindcore, metalcore, progressive metal, sludge metal, and thrash metal.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Riff Kills Man! 25 Years Of Recorded Hard Rock & Heavy Metal by Martin Popoff Martin Popoff. Born in Castlegar, British Columbia, Popoff's interest in heavy metal began as a youth in Trail, British Columbia, in the early 1970s, when bands such as Led Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly were in the collections of the older brothers and cousins of Popoff and his friends. Black Sabbath played even heavier music, and became the group his circle of friends thought of as "our band, not the domain of our elders". [3] Other heavy rock albums of the era, such as Nazareth's Razamanaz and Kiss' Hotter Than Hell , further shaped his emerging musical tastes. Angel City and April Wine were among Popoff's favourite bands as a teenager. [4] Of popular music magazines around at the time, Popoff recalls being a regular reader of Circus , Hit Parader , and later, Kerrang! blew our minds." Popoff does not identify any specific writers as being particularly influential on his own writing style, saying "it never registered who wrote what." [4] Popoff received a B.A in English from the University of Victoria in 1984 and an MBA in marketing at McMaster University in 1987, working for Xerox before co-owning a print brokering company. [1] For a while in the 1980s he also played drums in a bar band called Torque. In 1993 he released his first book, the independently published Riff Kills Man!: 25 Years Of Recorded Hard Rock and Heavy Metal , a collection of 1,942 critical reviews of heavy metal records.

Book review in July 9, 2004 issue of Heavy metal book review The Collector’s Guide To Heavy Metal - Volume 1: The grades, the first for heaviness and the second for musical Seventies merit. That would explain how symbols, thrashing rhythms, speedy playing and “nutty the music critic and Goldmine contributor managed to pen vocals, while essentially discounting all ballads. But some six books about heavy metal and one albums rank so low on his heaviness scale about Southern rock - containing a total (Nick Gilder’s catalog, April Wine’s mid of more than 7,700 reviews of songs and 70’s output), it’s fair to question why albums - in 10 years. Popoff even bothered to inclued them. Of course, Popoff’s flippant writing Excluding Kansas and Jethro Tull while style indicates he may dash off a couple giving a nod to REO Speedwagon and dozen reviews every hour or so. But his Desmond Child is almost unforgivable. work is admirable (and valuable) for at Yet Popoff doesn’t seem to take himself least two important reasons: First, he’s (or the book’s entries) too seriously, so more thorough and exhaustive than most readers shouldn’t, either.

  • Why Collect Heavy Metal?
COLLECTING HEAVY METAL MUSIC BY KARSON JONES THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY WHY COLLECT HEAVY METAL? Heavy Metal, more than most forms of popular music, has endured scathing criticism from all sides. Music critics, politicians, and parent groups have all decried the musical degeneracy1 and moral decrepitude2 of the genre. In the face of this, however, metal has simply become more popular and more extreme in its sound, imagery, and values. Heavy metal music and culture has, for most of its existence, fallen very much outside the mainstream and in many ways defines itself as anti-establishment. Many might ask whether this music, being so frequently derided, is worthy of academic study and whether libraries should be adding it to their collections. The fact is that, regardless of how one feels about the music and culture of heavy metal, an increasing amount of social scientific and musicological research is being done on the subject. There is also evidence that heavy metal is increasingly being included in post-secondary curricula.3 Research collections and archives are needed to support this study and teaching. These collections need to contain not only the academic literature and the seminal sound recordings, but also the visual art, fashion, and other ephemera that are inseparable from the metal experience. At various institutions, one will find substantial collections dedicated to other marginal genres and subgenres of music, national musics, and even individual bands or performers, yet metal has been, for the most part, ignored so far.4 There is a dearth of library literature on this topic. In 2002, Robert Freeborn performed a search in Library Literature for the keywords heavy metal and retrieved four results, only one of which was in English.
