Transformation of the Environmental Infrastructure is one of the key to drivers identified in the Black Country Strategy for Growth and Competitiveness. The full report looks at the six themes created under the ‘Urban Park’ theme and provides a spatial picture of that theme accompanied with the key assets and opportunities for that theme. Foreword to be provided by Roger Lawrence The Strategic Context Quality of the Black Country environment is one of the four primary objectives of the Black Country Vision that has driven the preparation of the Black Country Strategy for Growth and Competitiveness through the Black Country Study process. The environment is critical to the health and well-being of future residents, workers and visitors to the Black Country. It is also both a major contributor to, and measure of, wider goals for sustainable development and living as well as being significantly important to the economy of the region. The importance and the desire for transforming the Black Country environment has been reinforced through the evidence gathering and analysis of the Black Country Study process as both an aspiration in its own right and as a necessity to achieve economic prosperity. Evidence from the Economic and Housing Studies concluded that ‘the creation of new environments will be crucial for attracting investment from high value-added firms’ and similarly that ‘a high quality healthy environment is a priority for ‘knowledge workers’. The Economic Strategy puts ‘Environmental Transformation’ alongside Education & Skills as the fundamental driver to achieve Black Country economic renaissance and prosperity for its people.

Abstract The Anglo-Saxon period spanned over 600 years, beginning in the fifth century with migrations into the Roman province of Britannia by peoples’ from the Continent, witnessing the arrival of Scandinavian raiders and settlers from the ninth century and ending with the Norman Conquest of a unified England in 1066. This was a period of immense cultural, political, economic and religious change. The archaeological evidence for this period is however sparse in comparison with the preceding Roman period and the following medieval period. This is particularly apparent in regions of western England, and our understanding of Shropshire, a county with a notable lack of Anglo-Saxon archaeological or historical evidence, remains obscure. This research aims to enhance our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon period in Shropshire by combining multiple sources of evidence, including the growing body of artefacts recorded by the Portable Antiquity Scheme, to produce an over-view of Shropshire during the Anglo-Saxon period.

    Principal Centre – Bridgnorth Location 1 Summary of Settlement Study Area and Location Introduction Bridgnorth is a Principal Centre according to Shropshire Pre-Submission Draft Local Plan (2020). The study area boundary as defined within this Green Space Strategy is a 1.5km offset from the defined settlement limits. The town of Bridgnorth, in south east Shropshire, is located on a sandstone cliff and divided by the River Severn, with High Town on the western bank and Low Town on the eastern bank. The town grew as one of the busiest river ports in Europe, but river trade declined with the introduction of railways. Bridgnorth now has a population of over 12,000 people and the Town Council Area covers 1068ha with a population density of 11.3 people per hectare. It is a popular tourist destination due to its medieval street pattern, fine old buildings and steam railway. The geology and topography of the area provide strong environmental constraints, particularly around the river and cliffs and areas of high landscape value to the south and north of the town. It is bound on the east by the metropolitan Green Belt. Development context Existing development allocations in the town are set out in the SAMDev (2015)1, however the Shropshire Local Plan is currently being reviewed. Pre-Submission Draft Local Plan (2020) proposes other sites, which are not yet adopted. The sites currently allocated and those being proposed are set out below.     August 2012 North Birmingham News N E W S S H E E T S E V E R N V A L L E Y R U N Well guys and gals what an astonishing day Sunday the 11th March turned out to be. I have to confess when Secretary David Spencer asked me, very politely, to move the Severn Valley Run to early March I was full of doom and gloom. Traditionally February and March brings all kinds of inclement weather and the ever present threat of ‘salt’ to corrode our treasured motorcycles. With this in mind, I printed off an optimistic 20 route sheets but as the day approached and the forecast got better and just better I flew into panic mode and printed off an extra 10 copies. Thank goodness for the extra copies, Roger Slater and I arrived at the stroke of 10 to find Tony’s Diner at Quatford near Bridgnorth already ‘bursting at the seams’ and riders approaching from all directions. I estimate we had 40 immaculate riders and machines present of which 33 ‘signed on’. Yes gentlemen and ladies, you and your machines scrubbed up a treat!! Riders came from all points of the compass with representatives from the North Staffs, Midlands, Worcestershire and of course our North Birmingham Sections. The oldest machines present were Bill Orchard’s splendid 1925 flat tank Sunbeam and those fine supporters of our section, Pat and Brian Empsall with their 1928 Triumph Combination. The 1930’s were represented by Jonathan Jinks M20 BSA and Chairman Martin Round’s ‘first time out’ Red Hunter Ariel sporting a very novel ‘limp forward facing mirror’.
