For the urban excavator, its most valuable element is a check list of questions designed to guide the tactics of excavation. The graded list of burghs consisted of 108 ancient burghs, divided into four major groups on the basis of antiquity of burghal status, economic vigour, richness of historical source-material, richness of archaeological remains, and threats of develop- ment. In its final form, the document was submitted to the Committee for Rescue Archaeology of the Ancient Monuments Board for Scotland. Council has agreed that it should be distributed more widely. On the expenditure side, salaries, printing, stationery and postages were considerably higher, as expected, but the most obvious increase was in the transfer to the Publications Fund of £8,044-00 to meet the costs of the Proceedings volume 106. We had by last year exhausted the funds which had accumulated in previous years, and costs, subject to grants, must now be met by transfers from the General Fund. There is a balance of Income over Expenditure on the General Fund of £1,215-00 but this must be related to two items - subscriptions received in advance £1,325-00, and interests and dividends MEETINGS OF THE SOCIETY, 1976-7 | 397 £2,087-00 - both exceptionally high and not likely to be repeated at that level.
