The programme enabled 190 young people, aged between 5 and 8 years old, to participate in the sessions throughout the west region. This would not have been possible without the support of the ‘Regional Champions’, the ‘Activitors’, the parents and the other key volunteers. Our thanks go to these people and to everyone else who has helped to make the programme possible at the nine delivery centres: Clydesdale CC, Dumfries CC, East Kilbride CC, East Renfrewshire CC, Greenock CC, Hillhead CC, Renfrew CC, Uddingston CC and Vale of Leven CC. Batting first, the Western Premier champions were dismissed for just 97 by the Eastern Premier champions, Heriots CC. However, the Ayrshire side somehow defended their total – bowling Heriots out for just 92 and sealing their place in history as the first west club to win the play-off! Cricket Scotland is delighted to be able to confirm the appointment of Ammar Ashraf as the Community Engagement Coordinator for Glasgow. Ammar started on the 1st of September and is already putting some exciting plans into action to help to grow and develop cricket. Ammar can be contacted on 07841-455850 and by e-mail to: [email protected]. For more information about all the recent activities in and around Cricket Scotland please visit the website: http://www.cricketscotland.com/. Cricket Society of Scotland: This winter’s Cricket Society of Scotland programme of guest speakers gets underway at Titwood (Clydesdale CC), on Monday 9th October, at 7.30pm. The first speaker of the winter is Geoff Cope. Geoffrey Alan Cope was an off-spinner who represented both Yorkshire and England. His first-class career spanned the years from 1966 to 1980 - but success did not come easily to him. Despite capturing 40 wickets at less than 14 runs each in 1967, he did not command a regular place in the Yorkshire team until 1969 when Ray Illingworth moved on to captain Leicestershire. He was twice forced to remodel his action after being suspended in 1972 and 1978 - the legality of his action having been dubiously called into question on each occasion. Cope finally made his debut for England during the 1977/78 tour of Pakistan where he would have claimed a hat-trick in his first Test had captain Mike Brearley not made a political decision to deny that he had caught the third victim despite the umpire upholding the original appeal and the batsman walking uncomplainingly off! He ended his first-class career having captured 686 victims at 24.70 when, in 1980, his action was questioned for a third time. In later years Geoff was elected to the Yorkshire Cricket Committee, was appointed Director of Cricket in 2002, and was instrumental in getting Colin Graves (now ECB chairman) involved financially with the county when they appeared to be heading for bankruptcy. For further information about the west branch, please contact either of the Joint Secretaries Graham Hollier ([email protected]) or Ewen McConville ([email protected]). Umpiring News: Tuesday 26th September saw the first meeting of the West of Scotland Association of Cricket Officials (WoSACO) of the winter. The venue was Titwood (Clydesdale CC) and the main topics were a round up of the 2017 season and plans for the winter – and it was a good opportunity to socialise, with some food, after a long season. The next scheduled meeting is on Tuesday 31st October, at 7.30pm, at Clydesdale CC. More for information about WoSACO or its winter programme, please contact the secretary, Jim McClymont: [email protected]. WDCU / Senior Cricket News: The WDCU held an End of Season Club Forum at Shawholm (Poloc CC) on Sunday 17th September. Some information about the forum is available on the WDCU website (www.wdcu.co.uk) and anyone wishing further details should contact Iain Murdoch, the WDCU Administrator [email protected]. Western Warriors U15s: The Western Warriors U15s have now been confirmed as the 2017 Cricket Scotland U15 Inter- Regional champions, having gone undefeated - winning three of their championship matches and having the other three abandoned or cancelled. In total 18 players, from nine different west region clubs (Ayr CC, Clydesdale CC, Dumfries CC, Ferguslie CC, Glasgow Accies CC, Greenock CC, Poloc CC, Prestwick CC and Renfrew CC) played their part in the success. Congratulations to all those who were involved – and special thanks to Head Coach Paul Davies for all the work he did to help the squad make it three titles in a row!!! Statistically, throughout the eight U14 & U15 Western Warriors matches 30 players from ten clubs made appearances (the nine clubs previously listed plus Kelburne CC). Thanks must go to all the coaches and volunteers at these clubs for working with their players and assisting their development - and to all those people who have supported the regional programme this year. Congratulations to David Sturgess (Clydesdale CC) who finished as the leading run scorer with 200 runs at an average of 50.00 and to off-spinner Fletcher Rao (Prestwick CC) who finished as the leading wicket-taker, with 9 wickets at an average of 7.22. Sturgess was the only batter to score two 50s, with Angus Guy (Clydesdale CC), Ross Heginbottom (Clydesdale CC), Asad Khan (Clydesdale CC) and Adam Malik (Dumfries CC) all scoring one half-century – and Heginbottom recording the highest individual score, with 78. With the ball, Rao was the only bowler to take a ‘4-for’, with Shahzad Ahmad (Ferguslie CC), Rafay Khan (Renfrew CC), Faizan Rauf (Clydesdale CC) and Rao all taking a ‘3-for’ on at least one occasion. West Regional Development Centre U14 Challenge Series: The rain was the real winner in the 2017 West Regional Development Centre (WRDC) U14 Challenge Series – with three of the six scheduled matches, plus two re-arranged matches, plus a planned T20 day all being postponed! However, three matches were completed – with each team (the Eagles, the Foxes and the Sharks) winning one match. This has resulted in the Eagles and Sharks finishing on 11 points – and both teams will share the title. Congratulations to the players in both squads. Caithness County Council RECORDS’ IDENTITY STATEMENT Reference number: CC Alternative reference number: Title: Caithness County Council Dates of creation: 1720-1975 Level of description: Fonds Extent: 10 bays of shelving Format: Mainly paper RECORDS’ CONTEXT Name of creators: Caithness County Council Administrative history: 1889-1930 County Councils were established under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889. They assumed the powers of the Commissioners of Supply, and of Parochial Boards, excluding those in Burghs, under the Public Health Acts. The County Councils also assumed the powers of the County Road Trusts, and as a consequence were obliged to appoint County Road Boards. Powers of the former Police Committees of the Commissioners were transferred to Standing Joint Committees, composed of County Councillors, Commissioners and the Sheriff of the county. They acted as the police committee of the counties - the executive bodies for the administration of police. The Act thus entrusted to the new County Councils most existing local government functions outwith the burghs except the poor law, education, mental health and licensing. Each county was divided into districts administered by a District Committee of County Councillors. Funded directly by the County Councils, the District Committees were responsible for roads, housing, water supply and public health. Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archive 1 Provision was also made for the creation of Special Districts to be responsible for the provision of services including water supply, drainage, lighting and scavenging. 1930-1975 The Local Government Act (Scotland) 1929 abolished the District Committees and Parish Councils and transferred their powers and duties to the County Councils and District Councils (see CC/6).

  • Lady Mary, Countess of Caithness, Interceding with Middleton for Permission to Remove Her Father’S Head
Lady Mary, Countess of Caithness, interceding with Middleton for permission to remove her Father’s Head. PREFACE In collecting materials for “The Martyrs of the Bass,” published some time ago in a volume entitled “The Bass Rock,” it occurred to the author, from the various notices he met with of Ladies who were distinguished for their patriotic interest or sufferings in the cause of nonconformity, during the period of the Covenant, and particular- ly, during the period of the persecution, that sketches of the most eminent or best known of these ladies would be neither uninteresting nor unedifying. In undertaking such a work at this distance of time, he is aware of the disadvantage under which he labours, from the poverty of the materials at his disposal, compared with the more abundant store from which a contemporary writer might have executed the same task. He, however, flatters him- self that the materials which, with some industry, he has collected, are not unworthy of being brought to light; the more especially as the female biography of the days of the Covenant, and of the persecution, is a field which has been trodden by no preceding writer, and which may, therefore, be presumed to have something of the fresh- ness of novelty. The facts of these Lives have been gathered from a widely-scattered variety of authorities, both manuscript and printed. From the voluminous Manuscript Records of the Privy Council, deposited in her Majesty’s General Register House, Edinburgh, and from the Wodrow MSS., belonging to the Library of the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh, the author has derived much assistance. The former of these documents he was obligingly permitted to consult by William Pitt Dundas, Esq., Depute-Clerk of her Majesty’s Register House.

  • CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair
A GUIDE TO THE COUNTRYSIDE: CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair Clydesdale Horses There are now many more Clydesdale horses returning to the farms in the north of England and Scotland. Some farmers are buying horses to work, or for breeding, or just to have them as a hobby and for showing. There are a few farmers, throughout the whole country, who have never changed or mechanised their farms over the last fifty years or so. They have continued to work the land with horses of various breeds. Some farmers still only use horses on their farms, a practice that has been going on for centuries. Some farmers partly mechanised their farms when the use of tractors spread on British farms during the first World War, when the Fordson played a major part. The story of the A young boy holding his Father’s tractor started in America in 1889. Clydesdale horse in the farmyard Farmers who kept both tractor and horses, either maintained the horses for breeding or for the less heavier jobs on the farm. It’s a glorious site while travelling through the countryside to see a pair of Clydesdale horses ploughing a stubble field followed by scores of sea gulls hunting for mice and worms. I have many memories helping with the working, feeding and cleaning out of Clydesdale horses and getting to know the temperament of each individual horse on the farm. Like dogs, cattle or sheep, each Clydesdale horse is very different and each have their own characteristics and peculiarities. Can you help me cross this field? A pair of Clydesdale horses should be able to plough about one acre of land a day starting from about 8 o’clock in the morning till about 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
