  • THE SCIENCE BEHIND the NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION an Examination of the Geology, Soils, and Climate That Define Napa Valley As a Premier Grape Growing Region
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION An examination of the geology, soils, and climate that define Napa Valley as a premier grape growing region. By Gerald D. Boyd Napa Valley is a name that conjures up many images, thoughtful reflections and names of legends and leaders that are emblematic of the contemporary meaning of the valley as a major wine region. In 1966, with the opening of his eponymous winery in Oakville, Robert Mondavi, Napa’s elder statesman, recognized the unique qualities of Napa Valley soils and the wines they produced. “We knew then that we had the climate, the soil and the varieties that made our own distinct style of wine that could be the equal of the great wines of the world, but it did require the winegrowing and the wisdom to know how to present it to the world.” By the early 1970s, in another part of the country, I became acutely aware of Napa’s growing reputation when I made my first wine trip to France. As a newly minted wine writer, based in Colorado, I sensed that California wines were on the verge of making a major impact in the world wine market and that Colorado was hardly a thriving wine region. Fact is, although California wines were gaining shelf space in Denver, it was clear that Americans were then more Euro-centric in their wine tastes. It was a sign I took to heart while planning for my first trips as a wine writer. I mistakenly figured that the French winemakers on my travel itinerary would be well versed on California wine, so I should be prepared.

  • 2011 Kenwood Zinfandel Reserveproduct-Pdf
2011 Kenwood Zinfandel Reserveproduct-pdf - Sonoma County, California Why We're Drinking It Sold out at the winery, and only produced in the best years, this Reserve Zin is packed with jammy, juicy ripe fruit and exemplifies the massive, bold yet somehow still wonderfully balanced style that defines the best Zins from Sonoma County. Kenwood is pretty much a household name, especially when it comes to Zin, and this historic Sonoma winery deserves much of the credit for the popularity of quality Zinfandel today. While many of Kenwood’s releases can hardly be considered small production or boutique, their Reserve Zin is made in quite limited amounts and only in those vintages that warrant it. The 2011 vintage was spectacular for Zin, as evidenced in this broad-shouldered, super juicy red. Spicy, with a judicious note of herbs and floral aromatics, the 2011 Reserve was aged over 20 long months in a combination of French (62%) and American (38%) oak and includes a small amount of Syrah for added grip. The wine is drinking at its absolute peak right now and makes a delectable match for slow-cooked red meats, barbecued pork ribs or pasta tossed in a red sauce. Reasons why we love it: Kenwood’s roots stretch all the way back to 1906, when Pagani Brothers Winery opened up shop in what is today Kenwood’s home. Since 1970 Kenwood has turned out vintage after vintage of great wines released always at reasonable prices. For this Reserve Zinfandel winemaker Pat Henderson selected one barrel at a time (including the addition of 3% Syrah) from the best lots of Kenwood’s 2011 harvest.

  • Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
SONOMA COUNTY CABERNET SAUVIGNON For more than three decades, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series remains the ultimate expression of artistry and ne winemaking by blending the nest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma County. THE ARTIST Clare E. Rojas (born 1976) tells stories though painting, music, installations and video work. Her narratives used to be based in folk art tableaus that tackled gender stereotypes. Recently she has moved into pure geometric abstractions. She sees them as part of a continuum free of limitations and tied to her interest in color, line, shape and space. The geometric abstractions reference West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art. “For me the shift to abstraction was personal. There are a couple of challenges I find in abstraction. One is letting go of the idea that the viewer is supposed to perceive my work one way. There is no right or wrong way to look at the work.” Based in San Francisco, CA Clare takes inspiration for her art from her surroundings. For the Untitled piece featured on the 2013 label, Clare was moved to capture the reflection of light and shadow of a landscape over the course of a day, capturing time in moments. THE VINEYARDS Since its first vintage in 1975, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series has SONOMA COUNTY LAKE SONOMA represented the “best of the best” of our Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year ROCKPILE SONOMA COAST select vineyards located throughout Sonoma County’s premier Cabernet Sonoma County appellations are picked at the peak of flavor and then carefully crushed, DRY CREEK FORT ROSS VALLEY ALEXANDER VALLEY fermented, and aged.

Contact: Lana Gersten | 312.846.1655 | [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wine Industry Giants to Descend on Florida this January for the 16th Annual Naples Winter Wine Festival Naples, FL – September 8, 2015 – A star-studded lineup featuring some of the most celebrated vintners from around the world will head to Naples, Florida for the 16th annual Naples Winter Wine Festival, taking place from January 29-31, 2016. In attendance will be proprietors from more than 40 wineries in 13 global wine-producing regions, eight countries, and three continents. These top vintners will pour some of the most sought-after and collectable wines in the world for Festival guests. “One reason the Naples Winter Wine Festival is so special is that we consistently attract the world’s most beloved and celebrated vintners,” said Sandi Moran, Vintner Chair and Co-Chair of the 2016 Festival. “The influence of this year’s vintners on the global wine world is unparalleled, and we are so grateful that they are contributing their time to help us raise millions of dollars for children in need.” Leading the impressive lineup are Paul and Emily Michael of the Peter Michael Winery, who have been selected as Honored Vintners because of their unwavering commitment to the Festival and uncanny ability to produce many of the most highly rated wines in the world. Of the 214 reviews of their wine by legendary critic Robert Parker, Jr., 200 were awarded 90 or more points and five received perfect 100- point scores. Also in attendance will be Ted Baseler of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena, who will hold a special tasting on January 28, one day before the Festival officially begins, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Judgment of Paris.” At this notable event in U.S.

FWM_SanMateoProgCover_final_bleed_Layout 1 5/13/14 3:21 PM Page 1 —From Our Table To Yours— Family Winemakers . .fi ghting for small, family-owned wineries Family Small, family-owned wine producers across the state are the foundation of Family Winemakers of California. Formed in 1990 to lobby for the rights Winemakers of its members to freely produce, market and sell their products, we currently represent over 450 producers. of California Direct-to-consumer sales blossomed after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Granholm v. Tasting Heald. Now consumers in 41 states have a broader choice in wine. .and it’s because FWC provided key funding and steered the litigation battle. FWC has worked to keep taxes and fees on wine from rising, created new wine sales opportunities like farmers markets and event permits, stopped vine-killing pests, pushed for smart water rules, fought misguided labeling, and lobbied to keep state alcohol law up-to-date on the use of technology. Our legislative and regulatory work is augmented by the trade and consumer tastings we organize for our members to help them succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. This is our 24th year hosting events in the state. FWC’s fi rst tasting was held in 1991 at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Many of our members pour at our Bay Area tasting, as well as in Southern California. The wineries at these tastings are just as dedicated today as they were in the beginning to producing the fi nest wines they can. You’ll taste their passion captured in each bottle.

  • Nov 2019 Holidays in Sonoma
NOV 2019 HOLIDAYS IN SONOMA Greetings, Much like last year, the 2019 vintage gave us a late start to the growing season followed by mild weather. Since we weren’t faced with too many heat spikes, we were able to harvest the fruit at its ideal ripeness. The quantity of fruit is on par with the 20-year average, and the quality is excellent. Another spectacular harvest! Sauvignon Blanc came in crisp and bright, Pinot Noir is elegant and balanced, and Cabernet Sauvignon is nice and full bodied this year. We will be busy into December barreling down our 2019 reds as they nish fermentation and topping up our barrel-fermented Russian River Chardonnay for its long slumber until bottling next year. I’m also pleased to share that Sonoma County was recently named “Wine Region of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast.
