College Awards & Scholarships for Juniors

The following scholarships and/or awards are offered to juniors from specific colleges. Each year, these colleges notify the Guidance Office or the Principal’s Office of available scholarships and ask us to nominate the most qualified candidate(s). In order to do so, it helps us if we know which colleges you would consider attending if they offered you one of their scholarships or awards.

The Clarkson University Leadership & Achievement Awards

The recipients should be juniors who have achieved an academic class rank in the top 15% of their class. They should demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities, be recognized by students and faculty as having been a positive contributor to the school and community, be enrolled in a college bound program, and have an academic interest in engineering, business, science, or liberal arts.

One student will be selected for the Clarkson Leadership Award and one student will be selected for the Clarkson Achievement Award. The individuals selected will qualify for a $60,000 ($15,000 per year) or $48,000($12,000 per year) tuition scholarship, respectively, over four years should they apply, be accepted, and choose to enroll at Clarkson University.

Elmira College Key Award

The recipient must be a junior with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (90%) who demonstrates outstanding school and community leadership. One male and one female award may be given. Each recipient receives a $80,000 scholarship ($20,000 per year for four years) upon enrolling at Elmira College.

Marist College Greystone Technology Award

The recipient must be a junior with a strong academic record who is interested in majoring in a computer technology area in college. The recipient must be a member of their junior class who is one of the top students in computer science and mathematics; has demonstrated interest in computer technology; has a history of community service and is able to gain admission to Marist College on their own merits.

The winner will receive a plaque inscribed with their name and the award’s title, and the promise of a $5,000 scholarship annually to Marist College if the student is admitted and majors in one of the disciplines offered by the School of Computer Science and Mathematics (Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, & Systems, Mathematics, Math/Education). This scholarship will be renewable for four years contingent upon academic performance and the student remaining in good standing as a major in the School of Computer Science and 1

Mathematics. Children of full-time Marist employees are ineligible for the scholarship but remain eligible for the award.

Marist College Medal of Science

This award recognizes local high school students for outstanding academic achievement in science, coupled with significant community service in the area of health care. The recipient will be chosen based on two criteria: the highest 3- year average in science and math; demonstrated or documented service in the local community.

The winner will receive a medal inscribed with the award’s title, and the promise of a $5,000 scholarship to Marist College if the student is admitted and majors in one of the disciplines offered by the School of Science. The scholarship will be renewable for four years contingent upon academic performance and the student remaining enrolled in one of the majors offered by the School of Science. Children of full-time Marist employees are ineligible for the scholarship but remain eligible for the award

The Rensselaer Medal

The Rensselaer Medal is presented with two purposes: to recognize the superlative academic achievement of young men and women, and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering, and technology. This $30,000 per year merit scholarship is guaranteed for four years for each medalist who is accepted and chooses to enroll at Rensselaer. This is awarded to promising secondary school students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science.

To be honored with the Rensselaer Medal Scholarship, a student must: • Be ranked within the top 10% of the class • Be a member of the junior class • Demonstrate potential for success in a vigorous academic setting • Excel in advanced math and science courses (chemistry, physics, pre- calculus) • Exhibit significant interest and involvement in extracurricular activities

Student Sage Award

The Sage Colleges (the coeducational Sage College of Albany and the Russell Sage College for women) are looking for two students from the junior class who embody the Sage College motto: “To Be, To Know, To Do”. The candidates should be leaders and powerful communicators who are involved in the school and community by serving and inspiring others. Academically, they should maintain a grade-point average of at least a B+ and rank in the top 25% of their class.

Students should be able to demonstrate involvement in the community and balance numerous activities with enthusiasm and leadership.

If selected, the student nominees will be eligible for a scholarship or award of at least $60,000 over four years. The recipient will also receive a certificate of nomination.

Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience

The purpose of this award is to recognize students who exhibit the characteristics of an ideal Saint Michael’s student, based specifically on achievement in academics and community service. Two awards may be given, one to the top male student and one to the top female student based on the following criteria: • The students must be juniors in high school and must receive the award in their junior year. • The students must be inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent honors organization sponsored by the school • The students must demonstrate a sustained and sincere commitment to community service activities through their high school or organizations within the local community. Preference will be given to students who have taken on leadership roles within their community services endeavors.

The students will be presented with a certificate and a book, chosen by a Saint Michael’s faculty committee, on a topic concerning community service or social justice. Students who receive the Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Scholarship and Service are eligible to apply for the Saint Michael’s College Book Award Scholarship ranging from $13,000 to full tuition.

University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award

Each year, participating schools may nominate one outstanding junior to receive the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award. Winners of this award are eligible to be considered for a Bausch & Lomb Scholarship at the . Students are chosen based on the following criteria:

• Successful completion of a freshman- and sophomore-year science course, and one semester of a junior-year science course. • Academic excellence in science • Rigor of courses taken in the sciences • PSAT Math, SAT Math, and/or ACT Science/Math scores

The relative weighting of these criteria is left to the discretion of the faculty at the individual high school.

Winners of the Honorary Science Award are automatically considered for the Bausch & Lomb Science Scholarship, which provides each qualified student at least $10,000 per year (totaling $40,000 over four years). Selection for this scholarship is competitive and is based upon the overall strength of the student’s application for admission to the University of Rochester.

University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award

Each year, participating schools may nominate as many students as they wish for this award. Students nominated for this award meet the following criteria:

• Current junior • Strong leadership experience in school/community • High grades and challenging courses • Extensive involvement in extracurricular activities

The relative weight of these criteria is left to the discretion of the faculty at the individual high school.

Winners of the George Eastman Young Leaders Award are automatically considered for the George Eastman Young Leaders Scholarship, which provides each selected student at least $10,000 per year (totaling $40,000 over four years).

Selection for this scholarship is competitive and is based upon the overall strength of the student’s application for admission to the University of Rochester.

University of Rochester Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award

Each year, participating schools may nominate one outstanding junior to receive the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences. High school nominators must identify students who exemplify the revolutionary spirit of these two individuals and demonstrate a commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues. Only current juniors may be selected as award winners; students will be chosen based on the following criteria:

• Strong grades and rigorous course taken in the humanities and social sciences • A demonstrated commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues • Leadership • A dedication to community action

The relative weighting of these criteria is left to the discretion of the faculty at the individual high school.

Winners of the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences are automatically considered for the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Scholarship, which provides each qualified student at least $10,000 per year (totaling $40,000 over four years). Selection for this scholarship is competitive and based upon the overall strength of the student’s application for admission to the University of Rochester.

University of Rochester Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology

Each year, participating schools may nominate one outstanding junior to receive the Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology. The junior nominated for this award should meet the following criteria:

• A strong interest in innovation and/or information technology and a high level of achievement in this area • Exposure to new technologies outside of school, such as pursuing serious work opportunities in local laboratories or industry • Leading other students to new approaches to old problems; business plans for fundraising; innovative community service; after school activities; and best uses of internal communications tools such as chat and blogs

The relative weighting of these criteria is left to the discretion of the faculty at the individual high school. 5

Winners of the Xerox award are automatically considered for the Xerox Scholarship, which provides each qualified student at least $10,000 per year (totaling $40,000 over four years). Selection for this scholarship is competitive and based upon the overall strength of the student’s application for admission to the University of Rochester.

Wells College 21st Century Leadership Award

This Award program is designed to recognize students who embody the spirit, integrity, and intellectual qualities of strong leaders. Qualified candidates must have a cumulative grade point average of 90% and demonstrated leadership ability and/or potential through school and community activities. This award carries with it a potential $40,000 Scholarship for Leaders ($10,000 per year) for four years of study at Wells College.

Wilkes University Colonel Emerging Leader Award

This Award is granted to high school juniors who demonstrate academic and leadership potential. Selected students would be guaranteed a minimum of $10,000 per year and would benefit from the personal engagement and research opportunities offered this nationally recognized research university. To qualify, students must have a minimum 85% cumulative grade point average and at least a 1000 SAT, 21 ACT or 900 PSAT score. (Students who have not yet taken the PSAT, SAT or ACT may still qualify if they demonstrate continual, active participation in two extracurricular programs, two community service projects, or a combination of both).
