UNITY . HUMILITY . SERVANTHOOD . THANKFULNESS Head Coach Jen Greeny Jen Greeny, after three seasons at the helm of the Washington State University volleyball program, has made significant progress in rebuilding the program to the level of national prominence that it was when she played and was an assistant coach. The Cougars produced an 18-win season with five conference wins in 2013, the most wins since the 2009 season. Other notable accomplishments in the 2013 season included: going undefeated in the nonconference portion of the schedule (13-0); a 3-2 win over No. 16 Arizona State, the first victory over a ranked team for Greeny at WSU; a 3-2 win over No. 4 USC after WSU was down two sets and came back from a fifth-set 14-8 deficit to win 21-19, stopping six consecutive match points; and a 3-2 win at No. 23 California, the first win over Cal for WSU since 2003, and the first at Berkeley since 2003. The youthful Cougars proved to be fierce competitors in 2013, winning five of the nine five-set matches they played, the most five-set matches won since 2008. Four of those wins came over teams that went on to play in the NCAA Championship tournament. In March 2011, Greeny became the 12th coach in the history of the Cougars volleyball program. She has compiled a three-year record of 43-54 at WSU and has a seven-year career record of 155-78 (.665). As Jennifer Stinson, Greeny played and coached at WSU during the program’s most successful years on the Palouse and when hired, Greeny made a commitment to not only restore the program but to take it to the next level of success. To that end, she and her staff produced a 2013 recruiting class ranked 14th-best nationally and the 2014 class is equally impressive. The AVCA Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year was WSU’s Kyra Holt who also garnered All-Pac-12 honorable mention and Pac-12 All-Freshman honors. Cougar freshmen Emmy Allen and Hailey Bethune were named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention team. Holt is the most honored WSU player since 2011 when senior Meagan Ganzer became the first Cougar to be named to All-Pac-12 and All-Pacific Region teams, breaking a ten-year drought. Under Greeny’s mentoring, Ganzer became the fourth All-America player in WSU history and the first selected since 1996. Greeny, and her assistant coach Burdette Greeny, have coached eight All-Americans and three players who have had successful professional careers: Ganzer played in Puerto Rico, Romania, and Germany, Camryn Irwin in Austria, and Anile Clemente, a three-time All-American at Lewis-Clark State, played in Denmark. Greeny has also changed the academic culture of the program with consecutive semesters of a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. As the head volleyball coach at Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, Idaho) from 2007-10, Greeny accumulating an impressive 112-24 record (.824) while turning the Warriors’ program into one of the premier NAIA teams. She took the reins of a struggling program and led it to success, winning four consecutive Frontier Conference regular season titles and four consecutive berths to the NAIA National Tournament. The Warriors finished in the top 13 in the nation each year and ended the 2010 season at 31-3 (.912), the best mark in the history of the program. Greeny was a four-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year and the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association’s Northwest Region Coach of the Year. Jennifer Stinson was a stellar multi-sport athlete at Davenport (Wash.) High. At WSU she became the seventh player in WSU history with 1,000 career kills. A three-time All-Pacific-10 Conference selection, Greeny’s statistics are prominent in WSU’s all-time career lists ranking third in block assists (360), fourth in total blocks (419), and seventh in solo blocks (59). She trained with the 1997 U.S. National volleyball team. Greeny also excelled in the classroom where she was WSU’s Athlete of the Year in 1998-99. She was a CoSIDA District VIII Academic All-America first-team and second-team selection her final two years and was a Pac-10 Volleyball All-Academic selection three times. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from WSU in 1999. Greeny spent 4½ years on WSU Head Coach Cindy Fredrick’s volleyball coaching staff. At the time of her departure, Greeny had been involved in six of the 10 seasons Cougar volleyball qualified for postseason action, three as a player and three as an assistant coach. During her playing career, WSU was ranked as high as fifth in the country and made the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championship Tournament. Greeny was instrumental in WSU’s second and only other appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, in 2002, this time as an assistant coach. Greeny and her husband, Burdette Greeny, a former standout pitcher at WSU and an assistant volleyball coach at WSU, have two young daughters Lauren and Leah. 4 2014 WASHINGTON STATE VOLLEYBALL PASSION . UNITY . HUMILITY . SERVANTHOOD . THANKFULNESS Burdette Greeny, Assistant Coach Burdette Greeny may not have originally envisioned a career coaching collegiate women’s volleyball but his innate competitive nature and passion to see young peo- ple develop to their top potential both on and off the court have made him highly successful in this role. Greeny joined the Cougar volleyball program in March 2011 as an assistant coach after holding the same title at Lewis-Clark State College for three seasons prior to being promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2010. His recruiting prowess is a large reason the Cougar volleyball program produced an 18-win season in 2013, the most wins since the 2009 season. WSU’s 2013 recruiting class, ranked 14th-best nation- ally, was a strong indicator of Greeny’s outstanding talents on the recruiting trails. Not only did WSU sign an UnderArmour first team All-American, two honorable mention All-America players, and a Gatorade State Player of the Year, but in their first year of collegiate play three of those freshmen earned postseason honors. The 2013 AVCA Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year was WSU’s Kyra Holt who also garnered All-Pac-12 honorable mention and Pac-12 All-Freshman honors. Cougar freshmen Emmy Allen and Hailey Bethune were named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention team. Five freshmen from that highly- touted recruiting class contributed with substantial playing time in 2013. In three seasons at the helm of WSU, Head Coach Jen Greeny and her staff led the Cougars to improve- ment in total wins both in non-conference and conference matches.
