North American Finns in the Soviet Union in the 1930S EVGENY At the Intersections of Nations, Diasporas, and Modernities: North American Finns in the Soviet Union in the 1930s EVGENY EFREMKIN A DISSERTATION* SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2014 © Evgeny Efremkin, 2014 Abstract In the early 1930s, approximately seven thousand North American Finns, many of whom were born in Canada and the United States, left for Soviet Karelia, an autonomous republic in north-western Russia, bordering on Finland. Through the case study of the Karelian fever (a term by which North American Finnish migration to Soviet Karelia is now known), this work analyzes processes of identity construction at individual, regional, and national levels. My argument is that transnational migrant labour became a means by which diasporic, regional, and national leaders defined and redefined the cultural and political borders of their imagined communities. Whereas the movement of people was physically and psychologically transnational, national and diasporic imaginaries on both sides of the Atlantic were engaged in a perpetual effort to include, and in other instances reject, the cultural, social, economic, and political memberships of these migrants in their communities. The study focuses on a specific community, but transcends geographical boundaries in a period of less than a decade and shows a vibrant, tumultuous historical process of identity formation, both structural and subjective. In addition to analytical frameworks of nation and diaspora, my work looks at immigrant lives in dissimilar and competing versions of modernity, western capitalism and Soviet socialism. Finns on the move across the Atlantic in the 1920s and the 1930s were transnational agents, who by virtue of their mobility infused elements of western modernization into the Soviet society. As a result, these Finnish migrants who moved across land and sea borders in search of a social, economic, and political haven, became embroiled in the process of modern nation-state construction, but also found themselves within a larger, global contest of alternative modernities, that is between competing notions of what the new subject of the modern nation-state should look like. What follows is a multi-sited ethnographic analysis of the way immigrants’ ethnic ii identities were forged, and contested in different social contexts and varying levels of scale. In other words, what were the ways by which social spaces such as diasporas (locally), nations (regionally), and modernities (globally) were culturally produced. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Roberto Perin, my thesis supervisor, who has extended his outmost support for the completion of this project. Through the case study of the Karelian fever (a term by which North American Finnish migration to Soviet Karelia is now known), this work analyzes processes of identity construction at individual, organizational, regional, and national levels. My argument is that transnational migrant labor – a subaltern force consisting primarily of nuclear and extended family units on the move in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in search of economic and social security – became a means by which diasporic, regional, and national leaders defined and redefined the cultural and political borders of their imagined communities. Whereas the movement of people was physically and psychologically transnational, national and diasporic imaginaries on both sides of the Atlantic were engaged in a perpetual effort to include, and in other instances reject, the cultural, social, economic, and political memberships of these migrants in their communities. While my study focuses on a specific community, it nonetheless transcends geographical and ethnic boundaries in a period of less than a decade and shows a vibrant, tumultuous historical process of identity formation both structural and subjective. Given that the migratory group and pattern under scrutiny involves analysis of socio-political and cultural discourses of nations outside the western hemisphere, i.e. the Soviet Union, my work looks at immigrant lives in different nation-states, but also in dissimilar and competing versions of modernity, western capitalism and Soviet socialism. The migratory group under investigation – Finns on the move between Canada, the United States, Finland, and the Soviet Union in the 1920s and the 1930s – were transnational agents, who by virtue of their mobility infused elements of western modernization into the Soviet society.     Fe1/llQscandia archaeowgicaX (1993) S. I. Kochkurkina ANCIENT OLONETS Abstract The Olonets Isthmus was colonized by man around 6,000 years ago. Stone Age and Early Metal Period dwelling-sites have survived from the earliest stages of settlement. Between the 10th and 13th centuries A.D. cemeteries with small burial mounds were established in the areas of the Olonka, Tuloksa, and Vidlitsa Rivers by the ancestors of the Livvik Kare­ lians and the Vepsians. The earliest written references to Olonets are in the Ustavnaya Gra­ mota of Svyatoslav Olgovich and in annalistic codes of the 13th century. Cadastre books of the 16th century contain a wealth of material on the history of Olonets. The strategic im­ portance of Olonets grew after the Treaty of Stolbovo (pi. Stolbova) in 1617, which was highly disadvantageous to Russian interests. In 1648-1649 timber and earthen fortifications were built at Olonets, and it evolved into the largest defensive and administrative centre of the Zaonezhye region. Together with documentary sources, archaeological excavations (conducted in 1973-75, 1988, 1990, and 1991) provide material for a study of how the tim­ bered town of Olonets and the courtyard of the fortress were built. They also reveal the fac­ tual contents of documentary sources, and describe material culture, which is not accessible through written sources. S.l. It contains most of the historical Karelia land inhabited with autochthonous Karels and more recently migrated Russians. Although tuberculosis (TB) incidence in Karelia is decreasing, it remains high (45.8/100 000 in 2014) with the rate of multi-drug resistance (MDR) among newly diagnosed TB patients reaching 46.5 %. The study aimed to genetically characterize Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates obtained at different time points from TB patients from Karelia to gain insight into the phylogeographic specificity of the circulating genotypes and to assess trends in evolution of drug resistant subpopulations. Methods: The sample included 150 M. tuberculosis isolates: 78 isolated in 2013–2014 (“new” collection) and 72 isolated in 2006 (“old” collection). Drug susceptibility testing was done by the method of absolute concentrations. DNA was subjected to spoligotyping and analysis of genotype-specific markers of the Latin-American-Mediterranean (LAM) family and its sublineages and Beijing B0/W148-cluster. Results: The largest spoligotypes were SIT1 (Beijing family, n = 42) and SIT40 (T family, n = 5). Beijing family was the largest (n = 43) followed by T (n =11),Ural(n =10)andLAM(n = 8).
