The charity has enabled work across each of these components and has published several reports which have provided the basis of new legislation, government policy or practice. For the last decade, the charity has focused on developing the Safe Systems approach, and in particular leading the establishment of the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) in the UK and, through EuroRAP, the global UK-based charity International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). Since the inception of EuroRAP in 1999, the Foundation has been the UK member responsible for managing the programme in the UK (and, more recently, Ireland), ensuring that these countries provide a global model of what can be achieved. -

It focuses on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries but it reaches back to the seventeenth century. It is Anglocentric but Wales and Scotland play more than walk-on roles. It is primarily Congregational but it draws from English Presbyterianism and it feeds suggestively into the United Reformed Church. More suggestively yet, it shows how what is apparently peripheral, or more certainly localised, eccentric, or exceptional, is in fact representative. Today's inheritors of the Reformed tradition need to be quite as aware of that as today's supposedly more objective historians. The Dawsons of Aldcliffe, for example, were excep tional in their sustained prosperity but there was not an aspect of contemporary Congregationalism which their lives did not touch or illuminate. Chapel thespians are footnotes at best even in the best chapel histories but Dorchester's Hardy Players shed light on many interconnexions in chapel culture. Joseph Priestley and the Intellectual Culture of Rational Dissent, 1752-1796 Simon Mills Department of English, Queen Mary, University of London A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 I confirm that this is my own work and that the use of material from other sources has been fully acknowledged. 2 Abstract Joseph Priestley and the Intellectual Culture of Rational Dissent, 1752-1796 Recent scholarship on the eighteenth-century polymath Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) has focused on his work as a pioneering scientist, a controversial Unitarian polemicist, and a radical political theorist. This thesis provides an extensive analysis of his comparatively neglected philosophical writings. It situates Priestley’s philosophy in the theological context of eighteenth-century rational dissent, and argues that his ideas on ethics, materialism, and determinism came to provide a philosophical foundation for the Socinian theology which came to prominence among Presbyterian congregations in the last decades of the century. Throughout the thesis I stress the importance of rational debate to the development of Priestley’s ideas. The chapters are thus structured around a series of Priestley’s engagements with contemporary figures: chapter 1 traces his intellectual development in the context of the debates over moral philosophy and the freedom of the will at the Daventry and Warrington dissenting academies; chapter 2 examines his response to the Scottish ‘common sense’ philosophers, Thomas Reid, James Beattie, and James Oswald; chapter 3 examines his writings on materialism and philosophical necessity and his debates with Richard Price, John Palmer, Benjamin Dawson, and Joseph Berington; chapter 4 focuses on his attempt to develop a rational defence of Christianity in opposition to the ideas of David Hume; chapter 5 traces the diffusion of his ideas through the syllabuses at the liberal dissenting academies at Warrington, Daventry, and New College, Hackney. -

During the summer of 1756, he was also taught math- ematics by a remarkable rural genius, John Dawson, a local surgeon who was entirely self-taught and who during the summer months accepted students from Cambridge University, at least 11 of whom graduated with first class honours in mathematics. Haygarth always kept in touch with his highly respected tutor, and statistical data prepared by Dawson formed part of his later writings. Sedbergh School has always had close links with St John’s College, Cambridge, and so it was natural that he went on to that College as Hepplethwaite Scholar in 1759. After three years, Haygarth decided to complete his medical education at Edinburgh, which was then rap- idly taking over from Leyden as a place of pilgrimage for young students. He studied in Edinburgh for three years, being greatly influenced by the leading phys- ician of the Edinburgh school, William Cullen, par- ticularly by his teaching on fevers. Haygarth also made important friendships with contemporaries such as William Falconer1 of Chester, Thomas Percival2,3 from Unitarian Warrington, and the Virginian Arthur Lee, later to be a figure of signifi- Early life cance in the history of American independence. -

It is hoped that further volumes covering the fourteenth-century ordinations at York will appear shortly. This present volume includes the later years of Archbishop Richard Scrope’s ordinations (for 1400-5), the sede vacante ordinations lists 1405-8, the whole of those ordinations recorded in Archbishop Henry Bowet’s register (1408-23), and the first part (for 1423-4) of the subsequent sede vacante ordinations.1 As was the case with Archbishop Kemp’s register2 the lists of ordinations in the two archiepiscopal registers covered by this present volume are registered in two separate sections, those undertaken ‘by authority of the archbishop’ and those ‘by authority of the vicar-general’. -

Niccol`oFontana Tartaglia (1499/1500 in Brescia { 13 December 1557 in Venice) was an Italian mathematician, engineer (designing fortifications), a surveyor (of topography, seeking the best means of defense or offense) and a bookkeeper from the then- Niccol`oFontana Tartaglia Republic of Venice (now part of Italy). He published many books, including the first Italian translations of Archimedes and Euclid, Universita' di Bresia and an acclaimed compilation of mathematics. Tartaglia was the first to apply mathematics to the investigation of the paths of can- nonballs, known as ballistics, in his Nova Scientia, \A New Science;" his work was later partially validated and partially superseded by Galileo's studies on falling bodies. He also published a treatise on retrieving sunken ships. Galileo Galilei (15 February 1564 { 8 January 1642), was an Italian astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher, and math- ematician who played a major role in the scientific revolution during the Renaissance. Galileo has been called the \father of obser- Ostilio Ricci (1540{1603) was an Italian mathematician.
