Dear Prospective Student,

The University of Rochester is one of America’s finest institutions of higher learning. With over 165 years of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, Rochester has forged a proud academic tradition. Rochester students, faculty and staff strive daily to bolster this rich history through their own ingenuity, creativity and discovery. In the humanities, our students and faculty are studying the masters while creating their own art, music and prose. Social sciences like our political science, economics and psychology departments have earned national recognition for teaching and research. The hard sciences at Rochester such as engineering, optics, bio-medicine and physics are all on the cutting edge in terms of creating knowledge and advancing their respective fields.

The Rochester Curriculum is the primary reason that traditional learning co-exists with innovative research and discovery on our campus. Our curriculum is student focused and adheres to the philosophy that everyone does their best work when they follow their own interests. We do not have core requirements at the U of R. Instead, from freshman year onward, students take the classes that interest them. Students have the freedom to seek out coursework that they are passionate about and faculty whom they wish to learn from and collaborate with on research, writing and special projects. Students and faculty alike thrive in our unique educational setting.

The Soccer Program at Rochester also boasts a proud tradition. During more than 8 decades of competition the program has earned a winning percentage over 0.629 and individual players have earned 24 All-America honors. Since 1986 we have participated in the NCAA Tournament on 17 occasions, won 10 University Athletic Association titles and 6 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. As our university motto “Meliora” suggests, the soccer program strives to be “ever better” as we keep finding new ways to achieve higher and higher standards. In 2016, Rochester Men’s Soccer had its 17th consecutive winning season. The Yellowjackets also earned their 10th NCAA tournament appearance in the last 12 seasons – a milestone that only 10 Division III men’s programs have accomplished since 2005.

As the program embarks on its 84th year this fall we look to continue this well-established tradition of excellence. As a national research university, we recruit only the best student-athletes from across the nation. Our facilities are outstanding and include a new dedicated locker room, state of the art weight room, a beautiful 120x75 grass training field, a 5,000-seat lighted stadium with FieldTurf© surface, and we utilize VidSwap performance analysis software to break down each game for team and player development. We consistently seek to test ourselves against the best with our University Athletic Association matches and by scheduling nationally ranked opponents and Division I programs.

Like our curriculum, our Soccer Program focuses on students. Our staff supports the players in their personal, academic and athletic goals and we challenge them to achieve their full potential in each area. We design training programs for speed, strength, agility, fitness and ball work, and our players develop as athletes during their time here. We also help our players grow in terms of their understanding of themselves and the world around them. Sports psychology, leadership training, service and mentorship programs, and an international tour are all vital components of a four-year career at Rochester.

Our program is seeking intelligent, talented and thoughtful young men who strive for excellence and growth as students, athletes and as human beings. We bring people into our program who are self-motivated and who thrive on challenge. We offer these enthusiastic individuals an environment that both pushes them to achieve their potential and supports them in their pursuit of personal excellence within a team framework. If this is the type of college and soccer program you are searching for, then take a serious look at the University of Rochester.

The upcoming campaign brings promise for a group that gained valuable experience in the 2016 season. The Yellowjackets return 8 starters and 24 varsity lettermen. They also welcome another talented incoming class of freshmen and transfers who hail from across the country. Redd Brown Goalkeepers Rochester returns goalkeepers Redd Brown ’18 and Patrick Conway ’19 while freshman Hugh Curran joins the corps from Arlington, VA. Both Brown and Conway are agile keepers who bring experience as upperclassmen and a combined 32 starts over the past two seasons. Curran is athletic with good size and shot stopping abilities to round out a competitive goalkeeping unit for the program. Defenders UR returns a pair of junior center backs in Lasha Alkhazishvili and Luke Loecher. Both started all seventeen matches last year as they gained experience and now look to anchor the back line in 2017. Sophomores Mouhammed Thiam and Gabe Sarch, and freshman Brendan Brazinski and Mike D’Amico add depth at the central defender position.

Nik Angyal Lasha Alkhazishvili Nate Leopold At wing back, the Yellowjackets have athleticism and skill with five players having had productive spring seasons. On the right, Nik Angyal ’19 is a tough, consistent defender with Cristian Baltier ’20 bringing quickness and skill. On the left, Patrice Dougé ’19 is strong and athletic, Milan Fatschel ’19 is pacey with clean technique and Nate Leopold ’20 is an attacking minded back who loves to combine and get forward in the attack.

Midfielders Bryce Ikeda Zach Lawlor Geoff Rouin In central midfield UR returns junior, captain Bryce Ikeda and sophomore Zach Lawlor. Ikeda has been a key player for the Yellowjackets over the past two seasons with 32 starts, 2 goals and 5 assists. He is a creative box-to-box midfielder who will be influential on both sides of the ball. Lawlor really came into his own as his freshman season progressed last year. He anchored the midfield in a holding role with his consistent passing efficiency. Alec Hay ’19, Josh Cooley ’20 and JR Eisold ’20 all had fruitful spring seasons as they increased their roles in the center of the park. Hay is athletic and a strong ball winner. Eisold is clean and skillful and knows how to pick a pass. Cooley is dangerous going forward in transition at his attacking midfield role. Seniors Stefan Sarkovich and Jono Morgan are creative attacking options in midfield as well. Incoming players include Ryan Aspenleiter, Anurag Dwivedi and Jacob Sciandra. Seniors Alex Di Perna, Geoff Rouin and sophomore Mitch Volis will utilize their pace and skill on the flanks. Di Perna and Rouin are experienced and will be instrumental in the UR attack. Volis made an immediate impact as a freshman with 4 goals and will step into an even larger role this fall. Senior Pete Martin was consistent and productive during the spring and in Germany. He will add depth and experience on the right flank. Rochester welcomes freshmen Patrick Hill-Junke and Josh Saitsky who both add more speed on the wing. Forwards Aleks Dombrowski Senior, captain Aleks Dombrowski, sophomore Aidan Miller and freshman Peter Love will be running up top for the Yellowjackets. They have big shoes to fill following Jeff Greblick who graduated this past spring and led the team in scoring for most of his career. Aleks Dombrowski is an industrious forward who is determined to get on the end of service and score for the blue and yellow in his final campaign. Aidan Miller has height and mobility making him an effective target playing with his back to goal and combining with midfielders. Geoff Rouin and Alex Di Perna are versatile and can also bring a different look when playing up top. Peter Love comes to River Campus from Northern California and will be eager to make an impact with his strength and pace. 2017-2018 Men’s Soccer 3 2017 Season Preview Senior Bios #29 Redd Brown #22 Alex Di Perna Position: GK Town: Chalfont, PA YR GP G AA SV% YR GP G A Position: RW/FW School: Central Bucks Town: Bloomington, MN West 2015 15 0.92 0.741 2016 5 2 0 School: Shattuck- St. Mary’s Height: 6’0” 2014 1 0 0 2015 11 0 1 Weight: 180 lbs. ➢ Athletic excellence properly relates to the ➢ A consistent and challenging level of athletic caliber of experience offered to students. competition should be provided for both women and men.

For 30 years, the University Athletic Association has served as a bold statement of what can and should be - that it is highly desirable and possible for a group of committed institutions to conduct a broad-based program of intercollegiate athletics for men and women; to compete with like academic institutions spread over geographically expansive areas; and to seek excellence in athletics while maintaining a perspective which holds the student-athlete and the academic mission of the institution as the center of focus.

The UAA is a significant expression of the principle that the provision of a high-quality college athletic experience is worth the commitment required of an institution. It is worthwhile not only because it benefits the student-athletes, but also because it benefits the entire campus community and, in turn, the institution itself. Perhaps more importantly, the UAA is a strong statement that the success of intercollegiate athletics is wholly dependent upon institutional integrity and the ability of institutions to complete the full integration of athletics into the academic fabric of higher education. 2016-2017 University of2017-2018 Rochester Men’s Men’s soccer Soccer 15

Brandon Campbell ’10

Brandon Campbell is a composer for film, television, and video games in Los Angeles, CA. He began his career scoring student films as an undergrad at Rochester while studying Music Composition and Economics. During his school breaks he interned at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions.

After graduating Brandon returned to Remote Control where he began working for Ramin Djawadi, and quickly became his writing assistant. Over the years Brandon has had the opportunity to contribute to a variety of projects: Person of Interest, Game of Thrones, and Prison Break in television; Warcraft, The Great Wall, Dracula Untold in film; and the Gears of War 4 videogame. You can also hear his music on the YouTube series Storytellers. More recently, Brandon completed the score for Legendary’s The Thinning and the upcoming indie feature 7x7.

“My focus on developing good habits and discipline began at the University of Rochester, largely due to my time spent with the men’s soccer program. Success in Hollywood relies heavily on work ethic, collaboration, relentlessness, risk-taking, and working well with others. These are all skills that I sharpened while playing soccer for UR. The experiences, friendships, lessons, and drive that I gained at Rochester have been an invaluable part of my success thus far as a film composer.”

Brandon is a Suffern, NY native where he graduated from Don Bosco Preparatory. He was a goalkeeper on the UR men’s soccer team from 2006-2009 and was a three-time UAA All- Academic team selection. Campbell graduated with honors with a B.A. in Music Composition and Economics. He now lives in Los Angeles and his studio is located in Santa Monica at Remote Control Productions. 2017-2018 MEN’S SOCCER International Tours An integral part of the Rochester soccer experience

In front of the Köln’s largest cathedral, the Kölner Dom Every player’s four-year soccer career at Rochester includes the opportunity to take an international tour. In the springs of 2005 and 2008, the Yellowjackets traveled “across the pond” to compete in Spain and Portugal. In the springs of 2011, 2014 and 2017 the team traveled to Germany and Holland.

Each trip consists of playing matches against semi-pro and amateur ranks. In addition to the soccer, the trips include educational excursions and tours of cities and towns such as Estoril and Lisbon in Portugal; Seville and Barcelona in Spain; and Cologne, Munich and Hamburg in Germany. Visits have included a variety of cultural sites including the extravagant garden of “El Alcazar” in Cordoba, the famous Montserrat monastery, the Salvador Dali Museum, Dachau Concentration Camp, Neuschwanstein Castle, the Kölner Dom and 2008 many more! Camp Nou slowly filling up before a Barcelona The team also has time for relaxation and rest in places like the Mediterranean versus Villareal match beaches of Spain, or the English Garden of Munich. And finally, the Yellowjackets are able to see their sport at the highest level. In 2005 the team was able to attend an S.L. Benfica match at the Estadio de Luz. In 2008 they 2011 experienced the Nou Camp as FC Barcelona hosted Villareal. In 2011 the team enjoyed the rare experience of being an away fan first hand, where they sat in the Schalke 04 ‘away section’ for their Bundesliga match at FC Cologne. In 2014 the Jackets even got to practice on the Schalke 04 training grounds. During the 2017 trip they witnessed a relegation battle where the home side, Hamburg, pulled out a 90th minute winner over Wolfsburg to remain the only Bundesliga side to never be relegated since its inception in 1962.

The foreign tours are an extraordinary experience in every way, bringing teammates closer together and providing the players with memories that last a Schalke 04 versus FC Cologne match lifetime a lifetime.
