Dear Prospective Student,

The University of Rochester is one of America’s finest institutions of higher learning. With over 160 years of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, Rochester has forged a proud academic tradition. Rochester students, faculty and staff strive daily to bolster this rich history through their own ingenuity, creativity and discovery. In the humanities, our students and faculty are studying the masters while creating their own art, music and prose. Social sciences like our political science, economics and psychology departments have earned national recognition for teaching and research. The hard sciences at Rochester such as engineering, optics, bio-medicine and physics are all on the cutting edge in terms of creating knowledge and advancing their respective fields. The Rochester Curriculum is the primary reason that traditional learning co-exists with innovative research and discovery on our campus. Our curriculum is student focused and adheres to the philosophy that everyone does their best work when they follow their own interests. We do not have core requirements at the U of R. Instead, from freshman year onward, students take the classes that interest them. Students have the freedom to seek out coursework that they are passionate about and faculty whom they wish to learn from and collaborate with on research, writing and special projects. Students and faculty alike thrive in our unique educational setting. The Soccer Program at Rochester also boasts a proud tradition. During more than 7 decades of competition the program has earned a winning percentage over 0.629 and individual players have earned 24 All-America honors. Since 1986 we have participated in the NCAA Tournament on 16 occasions, won 10 University Athletic Association titles and 6 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. As our university motto “Meliora” suggests, the soccer program strives to be “ever better” as we keep finding new ways to achieve higher and higher standards. In 2010, the program earned a school record 6th straight NCAA Tournament berth while playing the 5th most difficult schedule in the nation. In 2014, Rochester Men’s Soccer had its 15th straight winning season on its way to the NCAA tournament for the 9th time in the last 10 years. As the program embarks on its 82nd year this fall we look to continue this well established tradition of excellence. As a national research university, we recruit only the best student-athletes from across the nation. Our facilities are outstanding and include a state of the art weight room, a beautiful 120x75 grass training field, a 5,000-seat lighted stadium with FieldTurf© surface, and we utilize Rightplay performance analysis software to break down each game for team and player development throughout the season. We consistently seek to test ourselves against the best with our University Athletic Association matches and by scheduling nationally ranked opponents and Division I programs. Like our curriculum, our Soccer Program focuses on students. Our staff supports the players in their personal, academic and athletic goals and we challenge them to achieve their full potential in each area. We design training programs for speed, strength, agility, fitness and ball work, and our players develop as athletes during their time here. We also help our players grow in terms of their understanding of themselves and the world around them. Sports psychology, leadership training, service and mentorship programs, and an international tour are all vital components of a four year career at Rochester. Our program is seeking intelligent, talented and thoughtful young men who strive for excellence and growth as students, athletes and as human beings. We bring people into our program who are self-motivated and who thrive on challenge. We offer these enthusiastic individuals an environment that both pushes them to achieve their potential and supports them in their pursuit of personal excellence within a team framework. If this is the type of college and soccer program you are searching for, then take a serious look at the University of Rochester.

2015 Season Preview

The University of Rochester Men’s Soccer Team embarks on the 2015 season looking to build upon its rich soccer tradition. The Yellowjackets return 19 varsity letterman from a squad that went to the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked #20 in the NSCAA national poll. Despite the loss of eleven seniors to graduation, a talented, young nucleus looks to build on to the program’s history and make their mark at Rochester.

Goalkeepers

Rochester returns three talented goalkeepers (Marshal Davidson ’16, Michael Shatkin ’17 and Redd Brown ’18) while welcoming an incoming freshman, Patrick Conway. Shatkin brings the most on field experience from the 2014 campaign with 19 starts and a 0.86 goals against average. Both Davidison & Brown worked extremely hard in the offseason to make the spring season very competitive for the starting spot. All three GK’s had solid performances against University at Buffalo during the spring season match. This leaves the coaching staff with plenty of talent and depth to choose from this fall.

Defenders

The back line will return three athletic, experienced players in Jeff Fafinski ’16, Mike Sergent ’16 and Zach Kanaley ’17. Fafinski and Kanaley bring pace and skill at the wing back positions – making Rochester tough to beat on the outside and dangerous in attack. Mike Sergent appeared in 11 games during the 2014 season and had a strong spring season at center back. Junior Tanner Chester and sophomores Sam Cekala and Pete Martin look to step into more prominent roles and add depth in 2015. The Yellowjackets also welcome several first year backs in Lasha Alkhazishvili, Milan Fatschel, David Gang and Lucas Loecher.

2015-2016 MEN’S SOCCER 3

Midfielders

Rochester returns a versatile and skillful group of centeral midfielders in senior Tyler Buck, juniors Ben Swanger and Mike Cross, and sophomore Aleks Dombrowski. Swanger looks to continue his integral role in the middle of the park for the Yellowjackets. He started all 19 games last year and had a strong impact in the NCAA Tournament with a goal in both games. Buck, Cross and Dombrowski bring toughness and passing ability. On the flank, Alex Di Perna ’18, Geoff Rouin ’18 and Alessandro Incerto (a junior transfer), will bring pace and skill along with more experience to the Rochester midfield. Talented incoming players including Patrice Dougé, Alec Hay, Bryce Ikeda, Dalton Munkombwe and Robin Tran are all eager and capable of making an impact for the Yellowjackets..

Forwards

The Yellowjackets return a fast and tenacious corps of strikers in 2015. Junior Jeff Greblick returns as the most experienced front Runner with 39 games under his belt. Andrew Greenway adds strength and hard running along with a powerful shot. Brendan Kelly ’17 and Alec Greenhalgh ’18 are both dynamic attacking players with great 1v1 instincts. Both are versatile and can play upfront or withdraw into midfield. 2015-2016 MEN’S SOCCER 4 Senior Bios Tyler Buck #10 Marshal Davidson #29

The academic enterprise is academic environment within which they exist. the primary element. • A consistent and challenging level of athletic • Athletic excellence properly relates to the caliber competition should be provided for both women of experience offered to students. and men.

For twenty-seven years, the University Athletic Association has served as a bold statement of what college athletics can and should be - that it is highly desirable and possible for a group of committed institutions to conduct a broad- based program of intercollegiate athletics for men and women; to compete with like academic institutions spread over geographically expansive areas; and to seek excellence in athletics while maintaining a perspective which holds the student-athlete and the academic mission of the institution as the center of focus.

The UAA is a significant expression of the principle that the provision of a high-quality college athletic experience is worth the commitment required of an institution. It is worthwhile not only because it benefits the student-athletes, but also because it benefits the entire campus community and, in turn, the institution itself. Perhaps more importantly, the UAA is a strong statement that the success of intercollegiate athletics is wholly dependent upon institutional integrity and the ability of institutions to complete the full integration of athletics into the academic fabric of higher education.

It helped him in the classroom and it helped him on the soccer pitch. The larger the stage, the larger the reward. Zoric had the perfect view of the United States Women’s National Team at the 2015 FIFA World Cup Final in Canada as the team doctor for the Americans.

“To be on that stage and around players at that level,” he said, “it was electric. It was an amazing experience.”

He has been part of the medical staff of the USWNT since 2008. His first experience with a major soccer event came in 2012 – at the Olympic Games in London. He has continued to travel with them to international training camps and tournaments, and in the lead-up to the World Cup finals, he was with the team for some qualifiers and some friendlies. His arrival on the world stage was precipitated by a stringent academic career which also gave him the opportunity to play soccer – and he was suitably rewarded for that.

Zoric’s ties to Rochester began at birth – when he was delivered at Strong Memorial Hospital. His father, Igor, earned a doctoral degree in physics on the River Campus. After graduation, the Zorics returned to their native Croatia. “As long as I can remember I had a soccer ball at my feet. My mom hated buying me new shoes because they would be scuffed and dirty in minutes,” Bojan said. As luck would have it, his father visited Rochester for a work conference. He told Bojan that while on campus, he bumped into Rochester head coach Mike Pilger and they talked. “Coach Pilger began contacting me to recruit me,” Bojan said. Rochester provided a great option for him. He could study and play soccer.

While at Rochester he majored in molecular genetics with a minor in chemistry. As a freshman, he played on a Rochester team that finished 12-5-1 (4-3 in the University Athletic Association) and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast Regional title with victories over Elmira and Hamilton. In his sophomore year, the Yellowjackets rebounded from a 1-3-2 start. They reeled off 10 straight victories and earned an NCAA playoff bid. The final mark was 11-3-3 (5-1-1 UAA) after a shootout loss to Ithaca in the NCAAs. Rochester was 7-8-1 in his junior year (2-4-1 UAA). Everything fell into place in his senior year. Rochester won the UAA title with a perfect 7-0-0 record (12-1-3 before the NCAAs) and was selected as the top seed for a four-team NCAA regional. The 7-0-0 UAA record marked the first time in the then-11-year history of the league that a team was unbeaten and untied. Bojan earned First Team All-UAA accolades. He tied for the team point-scoring lead with five goals, eight assists, and 18 points.

He excelled in the classroom and laboratories as well. Zoric was named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. In the spring, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. “Soccer gave me structure,” he said. “I came from Europe where school was free. Now I was in a situation where my parents had made sacrifices to help pay for my education. I needed to do well academically to be able to play soccer.” He graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors in 1998.

When medical school beckoned, he did a series of interviews before finding the perfect fit at UCLA. After four years of medical school at UCLA, he was accepted into a five-year Orthopaedic residency program at Harvard University. And after that, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman- Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. Following the fellowship, the first job he took was in Los Angeles. One of his colleagues was a team doctor with U.S. Soccer. The doctor asked if Zoric was interested in helping out with the United States women’s soccer team.

The World Cup Final was, in his words, “pretty amazing. Every game up to that point had been tight. As the clock ticked down in the closing minutes, I kept saying the same phrase: “Stay calm, stay calm. It’s not over –-- yet.” In Zoric’s eyes, this was the perfect game. The player in him applauds the two quick goals within five minutes, four goals after 16 minutes. “This was exactly the type of game I like to see,” he said – and not just for the goal scoring. “No one needed me” Translation: he never was called into the field to analyze an injury.

These days you can find Zoric back in the Boston suburbs at Sports Medicine North, where he works as an Orthopaedic surgeon. “I’m back to reality,” he says with a chuckle. The excitement of that summer afternoon will never recede, though. “It’s still great, great memories,” he says, “an unbelievable experience.” 2015-2016 MEN’S SOCCER
