Emeritus Michael Wiwchar, C.Ss.R UCC Saskatchewan Nation Builder Award Recipient Michael Wiwchar was born to Wasyl and Anna (Chajkowska) Wiwchar in 1932 in Komarno, Manitoba. He grew up with two brothers and one sister. His early schooling and aspirations took him to the Redemptorist minor seminary in Roblin, Manitoba where he completed his high school followed by his novitiate in Yorkton. Michael took his temporary vows in 1953. He then entered the major seminary Holy Redeemer in Meadowvale, Ontario to begin his theo- logical studies for the priesthood. He professed his perpetual vows in 1956 and was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha in Winni- peg, Manitoba on June 28, 1959. Following ordination, he returned to Meadowvale for his final year of theology and in 1960 he enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Ottawa, and for his Pastoral Year at St. Paul’s University, Ottawa. During his early missionary and priestly years, 1961-1981, he served at St. Vladimir’s College in Roblin as a teacher, Socious, Prefect and Director, Vocation Director and Campaign Director. In addition, he was the Sports Director and Coach of many sports, excelling in hockey. As concert director and tour manager he led the College boys on tours throughout North America, bringing the gift of Ukrainian song, music and dance to many communities. In his pastoral and missionary role, Fr. Michael served as assistant pastor and pastor for parishes in Roblin, Swan River and Ethelbert areas, as well as St. Joseph Parish in , Ss. Peter and Paul in Saskatoon, and St. John the Baptist in Newark, New Jersey. He was consecrated the third Bishop Ordinary of Chicago’s St. Nicholas Eparchy in 1993. His focus was revitalizing the growth of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, providing leadership training for laypeople in each parish to ensure that the Church was prepared to take its rightful place in the new Millennium. During this time he worked diligently to raise millions of dollars to assist the Church in Ukraine, which was emerg- ing from the underground. On November 29, 2000 Bishop Michael was appointed Eparch of Saskatoon Eparchy and on December 9, 2000 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of St. Nicholas Eparchy, Chicago. To serve their needs, Bishop Michael spent three years travelling between both . He officially retired as Bishop Emeritus on June 27, 2008 but contin- ues to serve his people with love and devotion. He is a man of extraordinary ministry who has devoted his life to service and his people. Whenever called, he has responded with dedication and kindness. He has worked tirelessly to support the Ukrainian Catholic Church in North America and Ukraine. In 2019, as a further demonstration of his commitment to his beloved Church and community, he established the Bishop Michael Wiwchar C.Ss.R. Charity Fund at the Saskatoon Community Foundation to support charities in the Ukrainian Catholic communi- ty. Bishop Emeritus Michael now lives a quiet and prayerful life in the former Little Redemp- torist monastery in Ituna, Saskatchewan.
