Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Harbour Porpoises in Relation to Their Prey S SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF PA HARBOUR PORPOISES IN RELATION TO T IAL AN IAL thEIR PREY The population status of harbour porpoises has been of D concern for several years due to anthropogenic influ- T EMPORAL EMPORAL ences, especially incidental bycatch in gillnet fisheries. Proper management of a wide-ranging species such as the harbour porpoise requires reliable information on distribution, migrations, status of biological populations, and habitat preferences. This PhD thesis examines these D IS issues. Harbour porpoise distribution is examined by means T of satellite tracking (Paper II) and acoustic surveys, along RIBU with the agreement in results between these two very dif- ferent methods (Paper III). The data from satellite tracking T ION OF are also used to identify the boundaries of a genetically distinct harbour porpoise population and new abundance estimates are calculated for this population (Paper IV). Next, the underlying causes governing harbour porpoise H ARBOUR PORPOISES IN RELA IN PORPOISES ARBOUR distribution are explored by reviewing available informa- tion on harbour porpoise diet (Paper V) and correlating the distribution of satellite tracked porpoises with distribution of a main prey species, herring (Paper VI). Finally, the seaso- nal variations in distribution of harbour porpoises observed in a Danish strait, the Sound, are explored by examining the stomach content of porpoises from the area. Overall, this PhD thesis introduces several new applications for satellite telemetry data that – in combination with acoustic surveys – has significantly contributed to the current knowledge of harbour porpoise distribution. Furthermore, the thesis provides evidence of a porpoise-prey relationship which is important information in the conservation of the species, T due to its influence on harbour porpoise distribution.     The Regime of Passage Through the Danish Straits Alex G. Oude Elferink* Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea, Utrecht University, The Netherlands ABSTRACT The Danish Straits are the main connection between the Baltic Sea and the world oceans. The regime of passage through these straits has been the subject of extensiveregulation, raising the question how different applicable instruments interact. Apart from applicable bilateral and multilateral treaties, it is necessaryto take into account the practice of Denmark and Swedenand other interested states, and regulatory activities within the framework of the IMO. The Case ConcerningPassage Through the Great Belt before the ICJ provides insights into the views of Denmark and Finland. The article concludesthat an 1857treaty excludesthe applicabilityof Part III of the LOS Convention to the straits, and that there are a number of difficultiesin assessingthe contents of the regimeof the straits. At the same time, these uncertaintiesdo not seem to have been a complicatingfactor for the adoption of measuresto regulate shipping traffic. Introduction The Danish Straits are the main connection between the Baltic Sea and the world oceans. The straits are of vital importance for the maritime communication of the Baltic states and squarely fall within the legal category of straits used for international navigation For a number of these states the Baltic Sea is the only outlet to the oceans (Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland). The earliest record of M. leidyi is from August 2005 and the early summer of 2006, and in 2007, the earliest records are from February and March, from the northern Little Belt and Kerteminde Bay. In the period April to June, the density of M. leidyi remained very low in the Great Belt, but numerous reports indicate that the ctenophore in July to September was widely distributed in all inner Danish waters, and "mass occurrences" have been reported from certain areas.
