DECISION MEMORANDUM— INDIVIDUAL SANITARY MEASURE Denmark Daniel Oestmann and Priya Kadam David Smith and Kevin Gillespie EQUIVALENCE REQUEST: Denmark requested an equivalence determination for an alternative post-mortem inspection i.e. visual inspection instead of palpation and incision of lung and liver and their associated lymph nodes of slaughtered market hogs. For purposes of determining equivalence, Danish market hogs are of the 220-240 pounds /six months of age range; the alternative post-mortem inspection procedure is not applicable to sows, boars, and roaster pigs. BACKGROUND: On December 16, 2008 in an FSIS-Denmark bilateral meeting a team of FSIS experts met and reviewed Denmark’s Supply Chain Inspection system, and presentations by Danish officials. The Supply Chain Inspection system allows inspection of market hogs raised under an integrated quality control program coupled with an on-site verification at slaughter establishments of visually inspected carcasses and organs to ensure that passed carcasses and parts are wholesome and not adulterated. As a part of this inspection system, on December 24, 2008, FSIS approved Denmark’s use of an alternative post- mortem inspection procedure omitting the incision of mandibular lymph nodes for market hogs used to detect granulomatous lymphadenitis which is mitigated through on-farm controls that are assessed and reported through government oversight when hogs come to slaughter. As a part of this Supply Chain Inspection system, in April 2010, Denmark proposed another alternate visual only post mortem inspection procedure, omitting the palpation of mesenteric lymph nodes of slaughtered market hogs used to detect granulomatous lymphadenitis is mitigated through on-farm controls that are assessed and reported through government oversight when hogs come to slaughter. -

LIFE SCIENCE IN SKÅNE – a survey of companies in the sector 426 companies 7 500 employees Medtech largest subsector Half of companies are located in science parks LIFE SCIENCE IN SKÅNE – a survey of companies in the sector PREFACE This analysis has been prepared by Øresundsinstituttet as part of the Interreg- There are 426 life science enterprises in Skåne, and together they employ 7 500 people in the region. That is around 1 500 more than the number of people employed by the same compa- project Greater Copenhagen Life Science Analysis Initiative and was written by nies five years ago. In the interim, 92 new life science enterprises have emerged in Skåne. Kristoffer Dahl Sørensen, Sofi Eriksson, Camilla Neve Lieknins and Emil Persson. More than half of Skåne’s life science businesses are based in science parks, and medtech is the largest subsector in the region: these are several of the main results of the survey of Project manager for analytics: Jenny Andersson companies presented in this report. Chapter 17 Places of Refuge for Ships: The Danish Approach John Liljedahl INTRODUCTION Every year, about 60,000 ships pass through Danish waters, and this figure does not include domestic ferry traffic. The majority of the ships will, during a con- siderable part of their passage, be less than five nautical miles from the coast- line and will pass through a strait1 into the Danish territorial sea2 or pass in a 1 Passage by merchant vessels through the Danish Straits (the Little Belt, the Great Belt and the Sound) is regulated by a treaty between Denmark and most of the European States signed at Copenhagen on 14 March 1857, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Montego Bay, 10 December 1982, UN/Doc. The offshore turbines are connected by cable to the transformer at the Amager power plant 3.5 km away. Kongedybet Hollænderdybet Middelgrunden Saltholm Flak 2 From Idea to Reality The idea of the Middelgrunden wind project was born in a group of visionary people in Copenhagen already in 1993. However it took seven years and a lot of work before the first cooperatively owned offshore wind farm became a reality. Today the 40 MW wind farm with twenty modern 2 MW wind turbines developed by the Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative and Copenhagen Energy Wind is producing electricity for more than 40,000 households in Copenhagen. In 1996 the local association Copenhagen Environment and Energy Office took the initiative of forming a working group for placing turbines on the Middelgrunden shoal and a proposal with 27 turbines was presented to the public. At that time the Danish Energy Authority had mapped the Middelgrunden shoal as a potential site for wind development, but it was not given high priority by the civil servants and the power utility. -

While there was no formal postal service at this time, the German Hanseatic towns had a messenger service from Hamburg via Lübeck, Rostock, Stettin, Danzig and Königsberg to Riga, and this may have been the service used to carry this letter. RPSL Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig 1587-1920 The Duchy of Schleswig: Background Speed/Kaerius, 1666-68, from “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World” The Duchies of Slesvig (Schleswig in German) and Holstein were associated with the Danish Crown from the 15th century, until the Second Schleswig War of 1864 and the seizure by Prussia and Austria. From around 1830 sections of the population began to identify with German or Danish nationality and political movements followed. In Denmark, the National Liberal Party used the Schleswig question as part of their programme and demanded that the Duchy be incorporated in the Danish kingdom under the slogan “Denmark to the Eider". This caused a conflict between Denmark and the German states, which led to the Schleswig-Holstein Question of the 19th century. When the National Liberals came to power in Denmark, in 1848, it provoked an uprising of ethnic Germans who supported Schleswig's ties with Holstein. This led to the First Schleswig War. Denmark was victorious, although more through politics than strength of arms.
