Order: Lepidoptera: Moths CLASSIFICATION Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Order: Class: Insecta Order: Lepidoptera Family: Subfamily: Genus: Lepidoptera Species: part A- Moths Both Moths and Butterflies make up the order Lepidoptera. For part a - we look at Moths. World-wide there are over 160,000 species of Lepidoptera. Currently there are over 22,000 species of Lepidoptera in Australia with approximately 21, 000 species being moths. Moths can be identified for the most as they fold their wings upright or rest with their wings laid out flat. In general their antennae are feathery. Some female moths do have thread-like antennae. Their body is covered in tiny, fish like scales. Moth caterpillars make silk from which they make a cocoon. Moths can be found Australia wide. The largest moth in the world is the Australian Hercules moth – Coscinocera hercules. This moth can have a wing span of up to 32 cm. Moths undergo a complete metamorphosis. When a fresh caterpillar hatches from an egg it eats the leaves on which the eggs were laid on. Before reaching the stage of full growth a moth caterpillar will shed its exoskeleton 5 or 6 times, this varies between different moth species. Most adult moths have a mouth part which is like a tube and is referred to as a proboscis. The adult moth uses this tube to suck nectar from flowers. Some moths do not feed at all in the adult stage, one such moth is the Hercules moth which lacks any mouthparts. Two moth caterpillars from the Saturnidae family. These caterpillars are harmless. (DLV) PAPUA NEW GUINEA I 30 MAY– 16 / 20 JUNE 2018 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ VELASCO and JOSH BERGMARK Our first tour to Papua New Guinea –including New Britain- in 2018 was a great success and delivered a high number of quality birds. A total of 21 species of Birds-of-paradise (BoPs) - undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary, and “out of this world” bird families in the world-, were recorded, perhaps most memorable being a superb male Blue BoP, seen at close range near Kumul for as long as we wished. Just as impressive though were spectacular performances by displaying Raggiana and Greater BoPs in excellent light, stunning males King and Twelve-wired BoPs in the Kiunga area, a cracking adult male Growling Riflebird at Varirata, several amazing King-of-Saxony BoPs, waving their incredible head plumes like some strange insect antennae in the mossy forest of Tari Valley, great sightings of both Princess Stephanie´s and Ribbon-tailed Astrapias with their ridiculously long tail feathers, superb scope studies of Black –doing full display!- and Brown Sicklebills, uttering their machine-gun like calls, and so on. While Birds-of-paradise are certainly the signature family in PNG, there is of course plenty more besides, and this year the cracking and little-known Wallace´s Fairywren was awarded bird of the trip, ahead of BoPs, crowned pigeons and owlet- nightjars! We recorded a grand total of 33 species of pigeons and doves, -they reach their greatest diversity here in New Guinea, as do kingfishers-, including 11 Fruit Doves, and, during the extension, the rare Eastern Bronze Ground Dove.

    Care guide Northern Emperor Moth Caterpillars, Syntherata escarlata These caterpillars are the larvae of the Northern Emperor Moth found in north-eastern Australia. The adults (moths) of this species are quite varied in colour ranging from brown, rusty-brown, orange, yellow and some even have streaks of pink. The larvae (caterpillars) are initially yellow/brown and covered in stiff hairs. The final instar caterpillars are bright green with a cream stripe along the flank, and have rows of red tubercules all sprouting short stiff hairs. They belong to the family Saturniidae which includes other well-known Australian species such as the Emperor Gum Moth (Opodiphthera eucalypti ) and the Hercules Moth ( Coscinocera Hercules ). This species has been recorded as feeding on a wide variety of plants. It is commonly found in north Queensland on Corkwood ( Melicope elleryana ). Once ready to pupate, the caterpillars create a silk cocoon (with silk produced from their mouth parts). The cocoon is brown and oval in shape, with a fibrous appearance. It is usually secured to a stem with a nearby leaf or two woven in to hide the cocoon. The pupation times can vary depending on temperature, however moths can emerge (eclose) around two weeks after producing the cocoon. Adult Northern Emperor Moths do not possess mouthparts and do not feed. As such they rely on energy stores built up during the larval stage and do not live long as adults. The sole purpose of the adult stage is to reproduce. Males have large feathery antennae which are used to detect the pheromones (airborne hormones) produced by females.
