Excel- lent minds, a high degree of freedom and outstanding work conditions create the foundation for basic research at the very highest level. And thus 20 Nobel Prize Laure- ates are among the ranks of the Max Planck Society to date. The Max Planck Society is an internationally recognized, autonomous science organization with a longstanding tradition. In 1948, it succeeded the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (KWG), which was established in 1911 and which num- bered renowned researchers among its ranks such as Albert Einstein and Otto Hahn, as well as Max Planck himself. A total of 15 KWG researchers were awarded a Nobel Prize, making Germany the leading scientific nation in the first half of the 20th century. With the German federal administration and its federal states each providing half of the Society’s financial resources, the Max Planck Society received basic funding of some EUR 1.86 billion in 2019. F Otto Warburgs Tagebuchnotizen von Februar–April 1945 Kärin Nickelsen Warburg’s diary notes February–April 1945 Personal notes in the form of a diary, written by the German cell biologist Otto Warburg in the weeks before the collapse of Germany’s Third Reich (Feb.-April 1945), were found at the end of one of his labo- ratory notebooks, which are preserved in the Archives of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. These notes are unique in form and content: there seem to be no other surviving diary notes of this type. Written from a very personal perspective, they provide a detailed account of how Warburg experienced local events in this decisive and turbulent period. Furthermore, they clearly demonstrate Warburg’s embittered attitude towards some of his long-standing collaborators, whom he suspected of having denounced him to the Nazi authorities. In this paper, Warburg’s notes are fully transcribed and integrated into the historical context.     No. 46 October 8, 2014 (Sel) Nobel Prize winner at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen and the German Cancer Research Center: Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Stefan Hell For the second time a researcher at the DKFZ has been awarded the highest distinction in science: Professor Stefan Hell, director of the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen and department head at the DKFZ, has been awarded this year´s Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work in the field of ultra high resolution fluorescence microscopy. This follows the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine for Harald zur Hausen. “Stefan Hell is an absolutely exceptional scientist,” says Professor Otmar D. Wiestler, Chairman of the Management Board and Scientific Director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). “We are delighted and very proud to have a second Nobel Prize winner from the DKFZ, following Harald zur Hausen, within just a couple of years.” The highest distinction in science rewards many years of tireless research work during which Stefan Hell achieved a ten- fold increase in the resolution of light microscopy, making it possible for scientists to obtain images of structures ten times smaller than anyone had previously thought possible. “He has taken microscopy to a completely new dimension,” Wiestler says. “During my PhD thesis work, I already suspected that the matter of light microscopy had not yet been entirely thought through,” Stefan Hell remembers. At that time light microscopy was believed to have reached its limits, at a barrier of 200 nanometers, as defined by Ernst Abbe in his famous diffraction law of 1873: For two dots to be distinguished in the focal plane of the objective, they have to be separated by a distance equal to at least half the wavelength of visible light.
