The YoungThe Palace 2019-20 Yearbook 2 018 -1 9 Welcome

Welcome to this year’s edition of the Young Palace Year Book. The idea of this publication is to give you a taste of the fabulous learning opportunities that our girls are provided with every day and to showcase their outstanding achievements. Amongst these pages you will find a wealth of extra-curricular clubs and activities, alongside music recitals, fixtures and outings from the beginning of the year. This year’s book will look a little different as it has been a year like no other. I am pleased to say that during this difficult time we have offered highly effective remote learning provision with outstanding outcomes for all girls. This has included registration, form time, assemblies, maths, English, topic lessons, cookery lessons, virtual residential trips, award ceremonies, small group maths and English lessons and much more. As a school we are proud that during lockdown 100% of core lessons were taught on Teams and that the pupils have returned to school engaged, enthused and achieving great things. Our here at Old Palace is to create a warm and caring environment where our girls become capable, confident and connected individuals, well positioned for a successful and meaningful future. As you browse through these pages my hope is that you will capture some of what makes Old Palace so special.

September Round Up

The new academic year got off to a flying start with a whole range of activities in all rooms. We had fun with denim on Jeans for Genes day and raised £37 for a very special charity that supports children in the UK with Genetic Disorders. The Pre School joined in with Prep to celebrate the European Day of Languages and thoroughly enjoyed a highly amusing puppet show put on by MFL teacher Mrs McMullen, where they learnt how to say ‘hello’ in Italian, Spanish and French. As part of the topic ‘People who help us’ we have had visits from Croydon Police and The London Fire Brigade, who taught us about the Green Cross Code, Stranger Danger and the LFB slogan ‘Get out, Stay out, Call the fire brigade out’. Meanwhile, the younger children have been talking about their families and enjoying the topic of ‘Harvest’ by making use of fresh fruit and vegetables in play, art and storytelling.

October Round Up

The start of the festival season has ushered in another very busy month, beginning with a number of Black History Month events. Activities started with some wonderful storytelling from Mrs Onigbogi, followed by cooking fritters with Mrs Hines and exploring African instruments and African discovery circle time with Hawa. For Harvest and Autumn, the Toddler room went to Lloyd Park to collect leaves, pine cones and conkers. Meanwhile, Pre School pupils made some lovely animal leaf pictures, harvested our potatoes and generally helped out with gardening. They planted flowers in the troughs and curry plants and lavender in the baby garden. To finish the month, there were pumpkins to carve and Diwali to celebrate; more lovely food to make and try, dancing and dressing up for everyone!

November Round Up

Nursery had an interesting month with the younger children getting fully involved with the theme ‘transport’. Babies, Toddlers and Transition used a wide variety of media and materials, experimenting with colours, shapes, textures, sizes and model making that resulted not only in some wonderful displays but also a large scale bus, bus stop, zebra crossing and traffic lights. These were used with enthusiasm in the garden to support imaginary play. With the onset of frosty mornings, the Pre School have been looking at the winter season, finding out about the colder regions of the world and how we adapt to the change of weather. As a group, they created a model igloo and made a lovely winter board full of snowmen and winter woollies! Thank you to everyone who donated to Children In Need; our Pyjama Day raised a magnificent £100.00 for the charity and the cake making was enjoyed by all.

March Round Up

The Nursery children were busy preparing for Mother’s Day. This involved a wide range of crafts and activities including: cutting, painting, sticking, planting and mark making, together with stories and discussions about our Mummies In Pre School there has been a lot of excitement as the focus was on one of our favourite topics ‘Dinosaurs’. This always provokes much thought and discussion; Q “What happened to the dinosaurs?” A “A rock from space hit the dinosaurs and then they were gone”. Children enjoyed collecting natural materials on the playing field to make a dinosaur land, solving the question of how to get the dinosaurs out of a frozen egg, exploring the dinosaur cave with torches, and seeing how combining materials can result in a small world volcano!

On Friday 13th March Nursery joined the Prep Reception girls for a charity walk for Sport Relief. They walked for over 45 minutes and raised a very healthy sum of £218.

June Round Up

Pre School and Transition children were very happy this week seeing their friends and getting back into a new routine. They settled in very quickly with lots of stories of how they had been keeping busy at home. We found that many have had new experiences; finding new friends next door, cooking, using a trampoline, keeping butterflies and hunting for ladybirds. The weather has been lovely and much of this week has been spent outdoors where the children tried racing on the running track, and collected natural materials for printing. They cut the printed paper into triangles to create 1-20 number line bunting; matching numbers, writing numerals and finding one more and one less. After finding a wild patch of sweet peas on the far side of the field, they used watercolours to paint their response to the wild garden.

The Young Palace Yearbook 2019-2020 9 Lockdown Nursery and Pre School

The children enjoyed lots of outdoor time playing games on the field, going on an outdoor shape hunt and helping with the gardening. They planted sweet peas and courgettes for the summer, taking turns to get water from the water butt using the watering cans. They all enjoyed making animals from cup cake cases for our display board and putting together a long number line of 20 flags, working out where numbers were placed in the line e.g. before or after, in front or behind, end or beginning. Transition have also been busy outside, using the bikes and enjoying the trim trail.

10 The Young Palace Yearbook 2019-2020 Lockdown Nursery and Pre School

In Pre School, the children decided they would like to leave for the Year 1 pupils who they had seen at a distance on the field. They left their messages under stones which they painted, excited to think the older girls would find them and even reply! All the groups had lots of fun outside. They had a go at playing cricket and enjoyed using the trim trail - pretending the ground was lava! On a rainy day, and working from the Pavilion, they played and watched the birds; spotting magpies, two green woodpeckers on the grass and a flock of parakeets. They did some work in pairs at the lightbox and played the fast and furious game of Dobble. This helped them negotiate and solve problems using rules, in a very fun and exciting way, which has resulted in us purchasing two more packs of Dobble cards!

The Young Palace Yearbook 2019-2020 11 Lockdown Nursery and Pre School

Mrs Anderson says: “It’s been an absolute joy to teach Pre School this week; the children have had so many great ideas that they’ve really kept us on our toes”. Pupils learnt about volcanoes and lava, making their own mixed media volcano pictures and experimenting with colour, design and form. Over the last two weeks there has been lots of activity in the garden as our new outdoor area takes shape. The children decided that they wanted to thank our caretaker, Peter, for all the work he has done making a new sandpit and moving our playhouses. They drew pictures and wrote letters, put them into envelopes and took them down to the workshop. Peter was thrilled to receive so much post and came up to the classroom later to thank them. Volcanoes led to dinosaurs and a trip to the library to research dinosaur bones and then make skeletons. In the garden they planted tomatoes and watered the courgettes. On the field they played duck, duck goose, climbed a tree and played football. All in all, it’s been a very busy week!

Primary Engineer and Hitachi Celebration Event On Monday 8th July, four girls from Preparatory, Amber, Abinesha, Isobel and Sariah, attended the Primary Engineer Hitachi Rail Celebration event with Mrs Wallis at the IET, Institute of Engineering and Technology, in London. All of the Year 5 girls had been working in pairs during DT lessons on making a wheeled locomotive powered by a motor and two batteries. Mrs Wallis then had the very difficult task of selecting only two teams to take part in the Celebration event. The Celebration Day was a chance for the two teams to test their locomotives and discuss their design and making process with the judges. The testing involved attaching their locomotive to two wagons and trying to pull the maximum It was a long day, with a break for lunch, weight over a distance of three metres but the girls had fun testing their designs and testing to see if the locomotive and seeing all of the other locomotives could travel forwards and backwards in a from lots of other schools. straight line. Maths Magic Year 2 have been learning about reflection symmetry in 2D shapes. We learnt what a line of symmetry is and why it is also called a mirror line. We folded a variety of 2D shapes to investigate whether they have lines of symmetry and how many. We discovered that for shapes with sides of the same length, the number of lines of symmetry is the same as the number of sides they have – an equilateral triangle has three lines of symmetry; a square has four lines of symmetry. Parallelograms and scalene triangles have no lines of symmetry and circles have an infinite number! We used mirrors and tracing paper to create some Maths magic, drawing accurate reflections of butterfly and monster pictures!

Art Installation Next time you are visiting the Preparatory School, keep an eye out for the window that was designed and realised by a group of girls across the school. This all started with the House Art competition to draw an image of what school means to them. With so many entries it was hard to choose, but with the help of Year 12 Art students and Mrs Broad they worked together to combine many elements into one final design, focused around the Four Pillars and the School crest. On Saturday, 22nd June, a workshop was run where the competition winners worked with clay to turn the design into ceramics tiles. They learnt numerous new skills and by working together were able to make fast progress, particularly in cutting out the very fiddly Michaelmas daisies. They added a border of their own hands and also chose a colour for the final finish. Once the tiles were made and bisque fired, the Senior girls returned to glaze them. It is always exciting to see them come out of the kiln after the glaze has been added, as some colours change quite dramatically at this stage. Over the summer Mrs Broad then installed the Art piece ready for the new academic year.

Year 5 Pizza Making Year 5 went to the DT room to make our own pizzas. First we all rolled up our sleeves and watched Madame McMullen make her own pizza. Then she told us to wash our hands. Madame McMullen brought round all the ingredients to each table. We were all super excited to make our own pizzas and a huge amount of chatter filled the room as everyone collected basil leaves. I love cooking and I love French, so having the two put together was fantastic. Catherine, Year 5

Absorbent or Non-Absorbent? – That is the Question! In Science, Year 2 is learning about everyday materials and their properties. This week, we investigated the absorbency of different types of paper – how good they are at soaking up liquid. Crepe paper absorbed less than we thought. The shiny side of the shiny paper was not wet, but the paper side absorbed more than we were expecting. We then thought about the link between absorbency and what materials are used for. Paper towels and kitchen towels soaked up the most water and we decided that they are good for mopping up spills. Tissues absorbed a lot of liquid but ripped. They are good to use when we blow our noses because there is less liquid to absorb and they are soft. Our next investigation will be on the properties of different types of fabric.

Art in Year 4 Year 4 girls have been exploring different viewpoints through photography in Art. Here are some photographs of the photographic magazines we have made from their work.

Joint Schools Concert Prep girls were fortunate enough to meet composer, Jack Oades, after the performance on Wednesday evening. They were particularly thrilled when he autographed their copies of his piece Te Deum! A real live composer! Avani and Catherine said: ‘It was a real surprise to bump into Jack Oades in the corridors at the Fairfield Halls after the performance. We were so excited that some of us screamed! We asked if he would autograph our copies of ‘Te Deum’ which he did with not much space to spare! It was a fantastic experience and we felt so pleased to have met him and so proud to sing in the world premiere of his piece.’

Year 1 Visits the Horniman Museum Year 1 had an exciting trip to the Horniman Museum for a workshop called ’ Toys around the World’. The girls studied all sorts of moving toys from Russia, Portugal and Africa, some of which were made from recycled materials. We also visited the famous Horniman walrus and looked at other animals on display in the museum. ‘My favourite toy was one with a bear who played the guitar when we pressed the button.’ Nia ‘My favourite part was when our workshop leader played us a song on an old toy accordion and we had a little dance!’ Kirstie

Year 5 Wins St Christopher’s Netball Tournament Huge congratulations to our Year 5 team, who were crowned winners of the St Christopher’s netball tournament on Friday. The girls worked hard over seven games throughout bitterly cold conditions and did not lose a single match. Lina and Marly excelled in the shooting circle and managed to convert seven goals in just one game! Kara and Daisy worked hard across the centre court to feed the ball into the circle from the centre passes. Andrea captained the team beautifully and Ava and Arisa’s defending meant our opponents could hardly score any goals all afternoon. Congratulations Year 5. A fantastic win!

Year 1 Fruit Salad Year 1 have been learning about healthy eating. In DT, the girls designed their own fruit salad and in English lessons, they wrote their recipe using lots of different bossy verbs! Year 2 Visit St Paul’s Cathedral On 15th November, 2J travelled by train to London to visit St Paul’s Cathedral and the Monument to the Great Fire of London. At St Paul’s we took part in a workshop. We were shown statues that were actually in the cathedral in 1666 and survived! Parts of them were missing because they had exploded due to the intense heat. We also acted out the story - playing the roles of Thomas Farriner and his family, the firefighters, Samuel Pepys and King Charles II - and learnt how the people of England supported those who had lost their homes, while the city was rebuilt. After lunch, we walked along the Thames Path to the Monument and Pudding Lane, spotting famous London landmarks along the way.

Fairy Tale Day Reception’s topic this term is traditional Fairy Tales. To support learning, we had a special Fairy Tale Day where the girls dressed up as their favourite character. In Literacy, we read stories and re-told them through role-play. We also focused on a character description of The Big Bad Wolf and made wanted posters. In DT we all worked together to make Fairy cakes. We read the recipe carefully and checked that we had all of the ingredients. After that we weighed, mixed and baked. Finally, the Fairy cakes were decorated – delicious!

A Celebration of Christmas (Years 3 -5)

On Monday, after school Years 3-5 delighted parents, teachers and friends with their Celebration of Christmas. Elements of the traditional Christmas story were re-told by Year 3 through readings, poetry and music. Year 4’s two nativity scenes (and song) had a modern twist with Herod claiming he had the ‘X Factor’ and singing Angels auditioning with arpeggios to God. Year 5 brought the true meaning of Christmas to us through retellings of the traditional Russian folk tale Baboushka and two Christmas scenes from the famous book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Prep Polyphonic sang three moving carols, including a lullaby, Little Child in four parts. The finale song for everyone was a rousing I wish it would be Christmas Every Day with actions and it was expertly accompanied by Nailah-Belle on drum kit and Mrs Newlands on the piano. The programme was selected and arranged by Miss Fitzgerald with help from Mrs McMullen who created the fabulous sets and props. Reception Celebrates Festival of Kings At the start of this term, the Reception class celebrated the ‘Festival of Kings’ by making and decorating their own crowns. This festival, which is celebrated in France and Spain, marks the day the three wise kings gave their gifts to baby Jesus. It is celebrated on 6th January every year and traditionally people in France and Spain eat a special cake called “la galette des rois” in French and “roscon des reyes” in Spanish. Most Spanish-speaking countries in the West also celebrate this day. In Mexico, for example, a mile-long cake is made and more than 200,000 people give it a try in Zocalo Square in Mexico City. The really fun part is that the cake has a special little king figurine hidden in it, and whoever finds it in their slice becomes king for the day and wears a crown.

Year 2 Create their own Tartan This term, Year 2 pupils have been learning all about Tartan with Mrs Coster. Some of the girls have surnames of Scottish origin e.g. Edwards – which means they already have an ‘official’ tartan. Others had to design their own. The girls selected between three and five colours (choosing ones which meant something to them such as a favourite flower), and made a Tartan out of paper strips. The results were very attractive, as we’re sure you’ll agree. “Tartan comes from Scotland. Scotland is above England.” “Scotland has some islands called ‘The Scottish Isles’.” “Tartan is made of wool. People wear it as scarves or skirts.” “A Tartan skirt is called a ‘kilt’.”

DT: The Diplodocus Who Came To Tea! In Reception we made sandwiches fit for a Diplodocus. As part of our learning on herbivores and carnivores, each girl was tasked with designing and creating a sandwich. They selected three ingredients a Diplodocus might enjoy. Young Voices Year 5 and 6 went to perform in Young Voices at the O2 Arena last Tuesday 4th February 2020 and all of us agreed it was an amazing experience! We enjoyed singing ‘Frightfest’ the most as it was full of spooky songs with some dance moves as well. We also liked singing the ‘Pop Medley’ and the ‘Queen Medley’ as they were both made up of well-known songs. We loved the lighting effects, especially when they used pink with white flowers and we enjoyed doing a mexican wave with the other 8460 children! The three hour rehearsal really tired us out and we were absolutely exhausted afterwards. Meeting Andy Instone (creative director) and the ‘Urban Strides’ dance group helped to keep us entertained though. Our conductor David Lawrence also kept us interested in what we were doing. The three special guest artists were Ruti (winner of ‘The Voice’), The Shires (a country music duo) and Tony Hadley (from Spandau Ballet). They sang various solos during the concert and the best part was we got to sing with them as well. They were accompanied by keyboards, percussion and other instruments that we had never heard before. When we had our packed teas we were chatting about the concert and whether our parents were coming to watch or not. Whilst we were waiting for the concert to start every time our school name came on the screen going round the arena we screamed and cheered, waving our two Old Palace banners. When it started all the lights went off and it felt really exciting but also a bit nerve-wracking as well. We loved singing with our friends and waving our torches. We sang very loudly! When the concert ended we were the last ones to be let out of the arena and then we had to wait in a long line to finally meet our parents at Tescos. We will never forget this phenomenal memory that Miss Orr, Mrs Coster, Mrs Jordan and most importantly Miss Fitzgerald gave us. Anaaya, Selina, Tia-Amelie and Kara, Year 5

Year 5 Goes Swimming

The Year 5 girls are all very good sports women and also most competitive. They have used a variety of equipment in their Swimming lessons this year including fins, hand paddles, pull buoys, kick boards, sinking bricks, spoons (a fantastic submerging game) and ball of all types. Here they are pictured with the latter which we have used as Lifesaving floating aids. The girls have also tried recovering ‘Bob’ from the bottom of the pool. He weighs the equivalent of an eight year old child when submerged and full of water. Mrs Tamplin calls him Bob because he doesn’t!

Year 2 - A Taste of the Caribbean On Monday 30th March, Year 2 had planned to have a day learning about Trinidad & Tobago, as part of our Humanities ‘Islands’ topic. Even though we were all at home, it still went ahead. We all wore red and black clothes, the same colours as the country’s flag, and completed a number of different activities. We produced posters about Trinidad and Tobago, including information such as its location, climate, currency, population, favourite foods and sports and the country’s national flower and bird. We designed and made our own carnival masks and drew or painted a hibiscus flower, which grows on the islands. Some of us even managed to find enough flour to make delicious ‘Trinbagonian Roast Bakes’! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to have a go at playing the steel pans, which originated in Trinidad and Tobago, but we still had a great day as you can see from Wthe photographs that we all sent in!

The Shaduf has a counterweight at one end to make it easy for the farmer to dip the bucket into the river and using the heavy stone weight, lift the water up and out of the river.

She was not only an astronaut but also a medical doctor, a teacher and a dancer. We think she’s a super role model because she worked hard and never gave up on her Space dream. In Maths, we made fantastic rockets from 3D shapes. We had lots of questions about Space: Lana wondered why the Earth stays in one place and Libby wanted to know how big the Moon was. We all made up our own Beatrix Potter character and wrote a story about it, with pictures to illustrate it. There were awards to be won with bronze and silver awards being given for all the work completed together in the mornings. Afternoons were spent working on challenges to gain a gold award and the very prestigious platinum award. There were projects to be completed and photos to be taken of shelters being built in gardens, nights spent under canvas, dinners cooked on a fire, geocaching, homemade drinks and cakes, bedrooms tidied, ponds being dipped into, Constable paintings, wormerys, houses for bugs, washing up stands, picnics and walks, birds arriving at bird balls, plus early morning and dusk adventuring.
