Marshall This thesis has two parts. The first part investigates the relationships between the Archiceroptera genus complex and other members of the Limosininae (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae). A focus is placed on the relationships within the larger epandrial process group, which contains Bitheca, Bromeloecia, Pterogramma, Aptilotella, and Robustagramma, along with Archiceroptera, Rudolfina and several previously unplaced species groups. Molecular and morphological data sets provide the first phylogeny of the group, and were used to support the inclusion of several unplaced species groups within Rudolfina and Archiceroptera, while one new genus is described. Pectinosina gen. nov. includes two species: P. prominens (Duda), previously placed in Rudolfina, and P. carro n. sp. The second part of the thesis deals with revisions of Archiceroptera Papp and Rudolfina Roháček. Rudolfina now includes 13 described species, nine of which are newly described here (R. bucki, R. exuberata, R. howdeni, R. megepandria, R. pauca, R. pilosa, R. newtoni, R. remiforma, and R. tumida). Archiceroptera now includes 29 species, of which 27 are newly described here (A. adamas, A. addenda, A. barberi, A. basilia, A. bilobata, A. bisetosus, A. braziliensis, A. brevivilla, A. browni, A. caliga, A. calligraphia, A. cobolorum, A. -

Marshall The genus Aptilotella Duda (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae: Limosininae) is redefined and revised. The type species, Aptilotella borgmeieri Duda is redescribed, and twenty-one species are described as new: Aptilotella andersoni, A. angela, A. caerulea, A. corona, A. diffisa, A. ebenea, A. gemmula, A. germana, A. gloriosa, A. gracilis, A. involucris, A. macula, A. pennifera, A. pichinchensis, A. pyropanda, A. quadrata, A. quatuorchela, A. radians, A. sphyra, A. umbracatus, and A. vivus. A phylogenetic analysis and key to species are presented, with illustrations and notes on distribution. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the family Sphaeroceridae (Dipte- ra: Acalyptratae) is reviewed in the context of a world catalog and bibliography covering the last decade (2000–2010). Bispinicerca Su & Liu, 2009, syn. nov., is synonymized with Opacifrons Duda, 1918 and the following new combinations are given: Opacifrons liupanensis (Su & Liu, 2009), comb. nov., Pseudopterogram- ma annectens (Richards, 1964), comb. nov., Pseudopterogramma brevivenosum (Tenorio, 1967), comb. nov., and Pseudopterogramma conicum (Richards, 1946), comb. nov. Thirty genera and 211 species were added to the family between 2000 and 2010, giving a current total of 141 genera and 1,550 species. A gallery with 32 macrophotographs is provided, depicting 32 species of 30 genera represen- ting 3 subfamilies of Sphaeroceridae. A world bibliography of Sphaeroceridae is supplemented with 306 references. Key words. The collection was started by Dr. L.H. Hale during 1970, and was resurrected and expanded from 1979 due to the foresight and energy of Dr “Jack” Tenorio, who also contributed a great number of specimens. Originally the collection was intended as an insect collection to assist identification of insects affecting agriculture, horticulture and silviculture in the Northern Marianas, and to contribute to the ability of pupils and students to learn more about the subject. During 2001 the collection was expanded to include all terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates, and a collection management protocol was established (see Appendices 1 and 2). The collection was originally owned by the CNMI Department of Land and Natural Resources , and was on loan to the NMC Entomology Unit for curation. During 2001 it was transferred to the NMC by agreement with Dr. “Jack” Tenorio, who emphasized the need to maintain separate teaChing material as well as identified specimens in the main collection. -

Crespi & Abbot: Evolution of Kleptoparasitism 147 THE BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF KLEPTOPARASITISM IN AUSTRALIAN GALL THRIPS BERNARD CRESPI AND PATRICK ABBOT1 Behavioural Ecology Research Group, Department of Biological Sciences Simon Fraser University, Burnaby BC V5A 1S6 Canada 1Current address: Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona ABSTRACT We used a combination of behavioral-ecological and molecular-phylogenetic data to analyze the origin and diversification of kleptoparasitic (gall-stealing) thrips in the genus Koptothrips, which comprises four described species that invade and breed in galls induced by species of Oncothrips and Kladothrips on Australian Acacia. The ge- nus Koptothrips is apparently monophyletic and not closely related to its hosts. Two of the species, K. dyskritus and K. flavicornis, each appears to represent a suite of closely-related sibling species or host races. Three of the four Koptothrips species are facultatively kleptoparasitic, in that females can breed within damaged, open galls by enclosing themselves within cellophane-like partitions. Facultative kleptoparasitism may have served as an evolutionary bridge to the obligately kleptoparasitic habit found in K. flavicornis. Evidence from phylogenetics, and Acacia host-plant relation- ships of the kleptoparasites and the gall-inducers, suggests that this parasite-host system has undergone some degree of cospeciation, such that speciations of Kopto- thrips have tracked the speciations of the gall-inducers. Quantification of kleptopar- asitism rates indicates that Koptothrips and other enemies represent extremely strong selective pressures on most species of gall-inducers. Although the defensive soldier morphs found in some gall-inducing species can successfully defend against Koptothrips invasion, species with soldiers are still subject to high rates of successful kleptoparasite attack. -
Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve
OJIBWAY PRAIRIE PROVINCIAL NATURE RESERVE One Malaise trap was deployed at Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve in 2014 (42.26278, -83.07246, 175m ASL; Figure 1). This trap collected arthropods for twenty weeks from May 1 – September 17, 2014. All 10 Malaise trap samples were processed; every other sample was analyzed using the individual specimen protocol while the second half was analyzed via bulk analysis. A total of 3235 BINs were obtained. Half of the BINs captured were flies (Diptera), followed by bees, ants and wasps (Hymenoptera), moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera), and true bugs (Hemiptera; Figure 2). In total, 757 arthropod species were named, representing 25.2% of the BINs from the site (Appendix Figure 1. Malaise trap deployed at Ojibway Prairie 1). All but 2 of the BINs were assigned at least to family, Provincial Nature Reserve in 2014. and 59.5% were assigned to a genus (Appendix 2). The acalypterate family Inbiomyiidae fam.n. (Diptera, Carnoidea) is described for the newly discovered Neotropical genus Inbiomyia gen.n. with its type species I. mcalpineorum sp.n. from Costa Rica. The genus ranges from Guatemala south to French Guiana and Bolivia and includes a total of fourteen undescribed species, ten of which will be described formally in a separate paper. Inbiomyia is distinctive, with characteristic, extremely shortened head with nonfunc- tional ptilinum and reduced chaetotaxy, shortened first flagellomere with very elongate, dorsoapically inserted arista, proboscis with largely separate labellar lobes that point in different directions, mid tibia lacking apicoventral bristle, unusual fusion of male sternites 5–7, reduced male sternite 8, elongate surstyluslike ventral epandrial lobes, cerci absent in both sexes, extremely truncate female genitalia, and large, extremely flattened eggs. The larva of Inbiomyia and its biology are unknown. Inbiomyia occurs mostly in primary lowland rain forest and often is associated with the decaying foliage of fallen trees. Inbiomyiidae belong in the superfamily Carnoidea. The previously doubtful monophyly of the Carnoidea is accepted tenta- tively on the basis of newly established synapomorphies of the male genitalia. Family level relationships of the Carnoidea are analysed quantitatively for the first time based on a matrix of fifty-eight morphological characters. The putative sister group relationship of Inbiomyiidae to the monotypic Australasian family Australimyzidae is supported by several synapomorphies, mostly from the male and female postabdo- men. -

Hailey Ashbee Advisor: University of Guelph, 2019 Steve Marshall Flightlessness in Diptera is discussed and incidence of wing reduction and loss in the Sphaeroceridae is reviewed. The genus Howickia Richards is particularly unique among genera which display flightlessness because it contains macropterous, brachypterous and apterous species, making it ideal for the study of the evolution of winglessness. This study illustrated, documented and phylogenetically analysed 26 Australian Howickia and Howickia-like species from the University of Guelph Insect Collection. COI data from sphaerocerids around the world as well as morphological data are used to determine outgroups for a morphology-based phylogenetic analysis. Results of the molecular analysis contentiously place Howickia within the strictly New World epandrial process group. Results of the morphological phylogenetic analysis establish one large clade and seven species groups. According to the phylogenetic analysis, wing loss has evolved independently at least three times in Australian Howickia. Several synonymies are suggested for consideration in a future revision.
