Makes me wish I could die, too!” — Cory Doctorow THE MACHINE COULD TELL, FROM JUST A SAMPLE OF YOUR BLOOD, HOW YOU WERE GOING TO DIE. It didn’t give you the date and it didn’t give you specifics. It just spat out a sliver of paper upon which were printed, in careful block letters, the words DROWNED or CANCER or OLD AGE or CHOKED ON A HANDFUL OF POPCORN. And it was frustratingly vague in its predictions: dark, and seemingly delighting in the ambiguities of language. OLD AGE, it had already turned out, could mean either dying of natural causes, or shot by a bedridden man in a botched home invasion. The machine captured that old-world sense of irony in death — you can know how it’s going to happen, but you’ll still be surprised when it does. We tested it before announcing it to the world, but testing took time — too much, since we had to wait for people to die. After four years had gone by and three people died as the machine predicted, we shipped it out the door. There were now machines in every doctor’s office and in booths at the mall. You could pay someone or you could probably get it done for free, but the result was the same no matter what machine you went to. Perhaps that’s why so many of these stories end badly for the characters who do want to know. We all want perfect knowledge of the future, but we can’t have it, so we make up stories to convince ourselves that we shouldn’t want it. Sour cosmic grapes. It’s clear that despite being someone who sometimes spends many hours in front of a computer, like Ferriss and Tynan, he isn’t content with the skinny-nerd stereotype. Winter’s webpage features a picture of him doing a single-arm handstand: he’s wearing a Google T-shirt, thin-soled “five-finger” shoes—also preferred by Tynan—and a surprisingly serene expression for someone who is upside down (figure 4.1). Looking on the bright side, although Kate Beaton's drawing style is not my favorite personally, it is expressive and seems to fit the content of the comic strips quite well. Beaton's book is crammed full of smart, funny, and shhh! No era or tome emerges unscathbed as Beaton rightly skewers the Western world's revolutionaries, leaders, sycophants, and suffragists while equally honing her wit on the hapless heroes, heroines, and villains of the best-loved fiction. Weren't we talking about Middle Ages stuff? Rochester and giggles at the problematic lives of peasants in Medieval England. This is more of a for-everyone Hark! A Vagrant. Beaton, for taking some of the world's most problematic characters fiction or otherwise and making them loveable again. Ratings and Reviews Write a review. Some of my favorites include Sherlock Holmes and his Watsons, pirate nemeses, and the various French Revolution figures. My favorite sequence would have to be the journey of Lewis and Clark, but the ones Hark! A Vagrant the Bronte sisters wer Hark! Hark! A Vagrant Vagrant features sexy Batman, the true stories behind Hark! A Vagrant Nancy Drew covers, and Queen Elizabeth doing the albatross.     Reading Between the Panels: A Metadata Schema for Webcomics Erin Donohue Melanie Feinberg INF 384C: Organizing Information Spring 2014 Webcomics: A Descriptive Schema Purpose and Audience: This schema is designed to facilitate access to the oftentimes chaotic world of webcomics in a systematic and organized way. I have been reading webcomics for over a decade, and the only way I could find new comics was through word of mouth or by following links on the sites of comics I already read. While there have been a few attempts at creating a centralized listing of webcomics, these collections consist only of comic titles and artist names, devoid of information about the comics’ actual content. There is no way for users to figure out if they might like a comic or not, except by visiting the site of every comic and exploring its archive of posts. I wanted a more systematic, robust way to find comics I might enjoy, so I created a schema that could be used in a catalog of webcomics. This schema presents, at a glance, the most relevant information that webcomic fans might want to know when searching for new comics. In addition to basic information like the comic’s title and artist, this schema includes information about the comic’s content and style—to give readers an idea of what to expect from a comic without having to browse individual comic websites. The attributes are specifically designed to make browsing lots of comics quick and easy. This schema could eventually be utilized in a centralized comics database and could be used to generate recommendations using mood, art style, common themes, and other attributes.

Delisle and his family spent a year in East Jerusalem as part of his wife’s work with the non-governmental organiza- tion Doctors Without Borders. They were there for the short but brutal Gaza War, a three-week-long military strike that resulted in more than 1000 Palestinian deaths. In his interactions with the emergency medical team sent in by Doctors Without Borders, Delisle eloquently plumbs the depths of the conflict. Some of the most moving moments in Jerusalem are the in- teractions between Delisle and Palestinian art students as they explain the motivations for their work. Interspersed with these simply told, affecting stories of suffering, Delisle deftly and often drolly recounts the quotidian: crossing checkpoints, going ko- sher for Passover, and befriending other stay-at-home dads with NGO-employed wives. Jerusalem evinces Delisle’s renewed fascination with architec- ture and landscape as political and apolitical, with studies of highways, villages, and olive groves recurring alongside depictions of the newly erected West Bank Barrier and illegal Israeli settlements. His drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).
