Trusmadoor and Other Cumbrian `Pass' Words Diana Whaley University of Newcastle Nobody ever sang the praises of Trusmadoor, and it's time someone did. This lonely passage between the hills, an obvious and easy way for man and beast and beloved by wheeling buzzards and hawks, has a strange nostalgic charm. Its neat and regular proportions are remarkable—a natural `railway cutting'. What a place for an ambush and a massacre!1 No ambushes or massacres are promised in the following pages, but it will be argued that the neglected name of Trusmadoor holds excitements of a quieter kind. I will consider its etymology and wider onomastic and historical context and significance, and point to one or possibly two further instances of its rare first element. In the course of the discussion I will suggest alternative interpretations of two lost names in Cumbria. Trusmadoor lies among the Uldale Fells in Cumbria, some five miles east of the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake (National Grid Reference NY2733). An ascending defile, it runs south-east, with Great Cockup to its west and Meal Fell to the north-east. The top of the pass forms a V-shaped frame for splendid views north over the Solway Firth some twenty miles away. Trusmadoor is a significant enough landscape feature to appear on the Ordnance Survey (OS) One Inch and 1:50,000 maps of the area, yet it is unrecorded, so far as I know, until its appearance on the First Edition Six Inch OS map of 1867. In the absence of early spellings one would normally be inclined to leave the name well alone, a practice followed, intentionally or not, by the editors of the English Place-Name Society survey of Cumberland.2 However, to speakers or readers of Welsh the name is fairly transparent. -

Waberthwaite & Corney Parish Council This is the submission on behalf of Waberthwaite & Corney Parish Council to the Boundary Commission for the Electoral Ward Boundaries in Mid and South Copeland. In identifying these wards, the following aspects and consideration were taken into consideration: Ease of access and communications for the public and public services The “sense of place” that these communities have had for decades Population density and appropriate numbers of elected members to the recommended ward boundaries The proposed naming of the wards, (Yellow = Mid Copeland, Blue = South West Copeland, Green = South East Copeland) gave consideration to reducing the possibility of conflict and or angst relating to historic terminology. They provide a logical description relating to the actual location to assist tourism and service providers. Mid Copeland (Yellow Area on the map) will include the Lake District National Park Authority Service Centre of Gosforth. There are many shops, restaurants, library and village hall. Mid Copeland links Seascale with its shops, supermarket, library, three churches, leisure facilities, primary school, surgery that covers down to Bootle, and railway station with the wider valley areas. The Low Level Waste Repository at Drigg is a major employer in the area and is sited close to the railway station. Within Holmrook there is a vehicle repair centre, a well‐stocked garage/local shop and an agricultural supplier/post office all based on the A595.This would be a two‐member ward South West Copeland (Blue area on the map) has the A595 running almost its full length. It has railway stations at Ravenglass (with access to Boot via the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway), Bootle and Silecroft. -

CHILD Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Directorate of Fisheries Research, Fisheries Laboratory, Pake field Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk NR33 OHT, U.K. Received25.i.84 SUMMARY Blood sera from four populations of charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) inhabiting three lakes in Cumbria were analysed for genetic polymorphisms. Evidence was obtained at the esterase locus supporting the genetic isolation of two temporally distinct spawning populations of charr in Windermere. Significant differences at the transferrin and esterase loci between the Coniston population of charr and the populations found in Ennerdale Water and Windermere were thought to be due to genetic drift following severe reduction in the effective population size in Coniston water. 1. INTRODUCTION The Arctic charr (Salvilinus alpinus L.) has a circumpolar distribution in the northern hemisphere. The populations in the British Isles are confined to isolated lakes in Wales, Cumbria, Ireland and Scotland. Charr north of latitude 65°N are anadromous but this behaviour has been lost in southerly populations. This paper describes an investigation of biochemical polymorphism of the isozyme products of two loci, serum transferrin and serum esterase, in charr populations from three Cumbrian lakes—Windermere, Ennerdale Water and Coniston Water (fig. 1). Electrophoretic methods applied to tissue extracts have been employed by several workers in an attempt to clarify the "species complex" in Sal- velinus alpinus and to investigate interrelationships between charr popula- tions (Nyman, 1972; Henricson and Nyman, 1976; Child, 1977; Klemetsen and Grotnes, 1980). -

The River Basin Districts Typology, Standards and Groundwater threshold values (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Directions 2009 The Secretary of State and the Welsh Ministers, with the agreement of the Secretary of State to the extent that there is any effect in England or those parts of Wales that are within the catchment areas of the rivers Dee, Wye and Severn, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 40(2) of the Environment Act 1995(a) and now vested in them(b), and having consulted the Environment Agency, hereby give the following Directions to the Environment Agency for the implementation of Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy(c): Citation and commencement and extent 1.—(1) These Directions may be cited as the River Basin Districts Typology, Standards and Groundwater threshold values (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Direction 2009 and shall come into force on 22nd December 2009. Interpretation 2.—(1) In these Directions— ―the Agency‖ means the Environment Agency; ―the Groundwater Directive‖ means Directive 2006/118/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration(d); ―the Priority Substances Directive‖ means Directive 2008/105/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on environmental quality standards in the field of water policy(e); ―threshold value‖ has the same meaning as in the Groundwater Directive; and ―the Directive‖ means Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23rd October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy. -
