It is also the story of how these self-same commoners constructed the unequal bonds of compul- sion and difference that anchored these vigorous and often beloved communities. It is a story about certain face-to-face human networks, called tlaxilacalli in both singular and plural,1 and about how such networks molded the shape of both the Aztec and Spanish rule.2 Despite this influence, however, tlaxilacalli remain ignored, subordinated as they often were to wider political configurations and most often appearing unmarked—that is, noted by proper name only—in the sources. With care, however, COPYRIGHTEDthe deeper stories of tlaxilacalli canMATERIAL be uncovered. This, in turn, lays bare a root-level history of autonomy and colonialism in central Mexico, told through the powerfulNOT and transformative FOR DISTRIBUTION tlaxilacalli. The robustness of tlaxilacalli over thelongue durée casts new and surprising light on the structures of empire in central Mexico, revealing a counterpoint of weakness and fragmentation in the canonical histories of centralizing power in the region. -

The present article proposes that our modern Western concept of borders and political boundaries was foreign to ancient Mexican societies and to Aztec-era polities in general. Consequently, the article aims to add a novel angle to our understanding of the notions of space, territoriality, and limits in the indigenous worldview in central Mexico during preconquest times, and their repercussions for the internal social and political relations that evolved within the Nahua-Acolhua ethnic states (altepetl). Furthermore, taking its cue from the Corpus Xolotl, the article reconsiders the validity of ethnic entities and polities in ancient Mexico and claims that many of these polities were ethnic and territorial amalgams, in which components of ethnic outsiders formed internal enclaves and powerbases. I argue that in ancient Mexico one is able to observe yet another kind of conceptualization of borders/ frontiers: “enclosures with inclusion,” which served as the indigenous concept of porous and inclusive boundaries, well up to the era of the formation of the so-called Triple Alliance, and beyond. -

Oczywiście nie można postulować, by tyle samo uwagi poświęcano kulturom mającym ogromne znaczenie dla całe- go współczesnego świata, jak na przykład cywilizacja rzymska, czy grecka i cie- kawym, ale mającym niewielki wpływ na resztę ludzkości, takim jak starożytni mieszkańcy Wyspy Wielkanocnej. Niemniej jednak, są w historii ludy, którym poświęca się zbyt mało uwagi w stosunku do ich osiągnięć i wpływu, jaki wy- warły na współczesny sobie świat. Jednym z takich ludów są Nahua, z których najbardziej znaną grupą etniczną są Mexica, popularnie nazywani Aztekami1. Po przybyciu do Doliny UMCSMeksyku w I połowie XIV w. i osiedleniu się na wyspie na jeziorze Texcoco, stopniowo rośli siłę, by po pokonaniu w 1428 r. regionalnego hegemona Azcapotzalco, utworzyć wraz z Texcoco (nazwa miasta taka sama jak jeziora, nad którym leżało) i Tlacopan, Trójprzymierze, które, aż do lądowania Cortesa w 1519 r. poszerzało swoje terytorium. The Marquisate of the Valley of Oaxaca was carefully constructed during his lifetime to be his lasting legacy in New Spain. The goal of this dissertation is to reexamine published primary sources in light of this new argument and integrate unknown archival material to trace the development of a lasting legacy by Cortés and his direct heirs in Spanish colonial Mexico. Part one looks at Cortés’s life after the conquest of Mexico, giving particular attention to the themes of fame and honor and how these ideas guided his actions. The importance of land and property in and after the conquest is also highlighted. Part two is an examination of the marquisate, discussing the key features of the various landholdings and also their importance to the legacy Cortés sought to construct. -

INTRODUCTION One of tlie leading diagnostics of the Mesoamerican Area Co-Tradition was the detailed recording of past events over relatively long time spans. 'í'his "cliroiiiclc conciousness", as 1 have elsewliere (Nicholson 1955b) refcrred to it, was much more fully developed here than in any other aboriginal New World region. Even many Old World cultures assigned to a substantially higlier rung on the ladder of cultural complexity cannot offer historical records nearly as rich or extending over such long periods. Students interested in the historical aspect of WIesoamerican studies Iiave always intensively utilized these native chronicles, but less attention has been directed to the native concepts of history and to transinission media and techniques. In a preliminary paper, deliver- cd orally 9 years ago an published only in brief abstract form (Ni- cholson 1963), 1 hriefly discussed the former aspect. Mesoamerican concepts of history -which would include consideration of why such a strong interest in history fluorished in this are- deserve much more analysis tlian they have yet re~eived.~However: this paper will iiot be concerned with concepts but rather will focus on the methods employed to transmit knowledge of the past aud the kinds of events recorded -its historiography, if you wili- in one Meso- amcrican subarea, Central Mexico. -

the 52-year calendar of the aztecs in the postclassic period 231 Chapter Four THE rITUAL PRACtICe oF tIMe oF THE 52-YEAR CaLeNDAR oF THE POStCLaSSIC aZTEC CIVILISATIoN It is from the Nahuatl-speaking Nahua culture called aztec, or Mexica1 as they called themselves; primary data of the ritual practice of time of the 52-year calendar are still in existence. I do not claim, however, that the Mesoamerican 52-year calendar or its associated ritual practices only ex- isted in aztec or Nahua society and culture. the term “aztec”2 derives from aztecatl,”person from aztlán”. aztlán— which can be paraphrased as “the white place” or “the place of the herons” in Nahuatl—was the designation for their place of origin. the aztecs con- stituted a part of the last Nahua faction whom invaded the Basin of Mexi- co after the decline of the toltecs (probably around 1100 AD) after leaving their place of origin (aztlán or Chicomoztoc).3 Not only their name but in addition their identity was hence transformed from chichimec4 when the aztecs founded the city tenochtitlan in 1325 AD (1 Calli according to their 52-year calendar), today known as Mexico City, on a few islands at the western part of the tetzcoco lake in the valley of Mexico. this became the capital of their transient realm in the northern and central part of Mexico from 1325 AD to 1521 AD (López austin 2001; Quiñones Keber 2002: 17). a triple alliance called excan tlatoloyan (“tribunal of three places”)—com- prising the cities tenochtitlan, tetzcoco and tlacopan—was established in 1428 AD by the regents Itzcoatl of tenochtitlan, Nezahualcóyotl of tetzco- co and totoquihuatzin of tlacopan. -

My name is Angel Rodriguez and I’m a junior from Reading, PA, majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Forensic Science. I have been part of Model UN since September 2017 and this is my first time as a chair. From 2017 until now I have been part of big conferences such as NMUN, McMUN and several others. In my spare time, I love playing basketball and recording myself playing my guitar too, later on, submit it to social media. I have a passion for Forensic Sciences and CSI fascinates me (not the TV show though). Fun facts about me, I cannot do horror movies under any circumstances, I speak two languages, English and Spanish, and a third one but partially which is Italian. The Aztecs culture is best known for the chocolate, amazing architecture, and their sometimes questionable religious ceremonies. Get ready to learn more this April… it is going to be amazing! Twelve THE MEXICA IN TULA AND TULA IN MEXICO-TENOCHTITLAN Leonardo López Luján Alfredo López Austin THE TOLLAN-QUETZALCOATL DYAD IN THE POLITICAL HISTORY OF MEXICO-TENOCHTITLAN THE autHorS of THIS CHAPter share an interest regarding a crucial dyad in Mesoamerican history: that of Tollan-Quetzalcoatl. A book on the nature of men-gods appeared more than 30 years ago (López Austin 1973); since then, another has just come out examining the Tenochca imitation of Toltec art (López Luján 2006). More than three decades separate one study from the other, and during this time, we have left the subject and returned to it, both individually and together. There is nothing unique about our keen interest in revealing the mysteries of the Feathered Serpent, the legendary ruler, and the city that oscillates between ecumenical and anecumenical.1 For centuries, countless authors, intrigued by similar enigmas, have come before us, and clearly many will follow us with their inquiries on this interplay of myth, legend, and history. Saying that the Tollan-Quetzalcoatl dyad is complicated because of the impact of politics does not fully explain this concept. The dyad was the ideological basis of a widespread political project in Mesoamerica, one that had been in operation for centuries. We dealt with this subject together in our essay Mito y realidad de Zuyuá [The myth and reality of Zuyuá] (López Austin and López Luján 1999, 2000), where we focus on the double figure of Tollan (as an anecumenical dwelling place, where the distinction was produced between men prior to their appearance on the surface of the earth and as a prototypical earthly capital), which is a parallel to the double figure of Quetzalcoatl (as a generic creator of humanity and as a legendary ruler). -
