Lee and McCormick had just won Olympic gold medals in Helsinki, Finland. Neitzke snapped a series of pictures, but never had a chance to speak to the two divers. In fact, Neitzke was busy getting ready to take part in his own athleltic com- petition: the European Army Swimming Championships. Fifty-one years later, Neitzke got a chance to meet the leg- endary pair at a breakfast held at Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa. The August 16 breakfast was a reunion of 10 former Olympians, and served as a fundriaser for the youth programs of the Lee County Sheriff's Association. On seeing Lee and Ed Neitzke and Sammy Lee McCormick, Neitzke immediately showed them the black and white diving "I really can't describe the feelings," Firefighter and Paramedic Tom Tracy drags 175-pound mannequin in the final round of the photographs. But when it comes to two minutes of pure Whell, nothing is quite like the Firefighter Combat Challenge. Earlier in the summer, five firefighters from Sanibel entered the Deerfiel'd Beach event and finished the course so quickly (1:52) that they won a berth at the Combat World Challenge XI, to be held in Ottawa, Canada this November. In full turnout gear and wearing breathing apparatus — which makes the mere act of walking an athletic contest — the firefighters performed six different tasks, all designed to simulate a real-life fire rescue. Firefighter and Paramedic John Murray began the relay for the Sanibel team by car- rying a 45-ppund pack up five flights of near-vertical stairs. After chugging his way to the top, Murray passed a flashlight — which served as a baton — to Firefighter and Paramedic Rob Doerr, who hoisted 45 pounds of fire hose to the top of a five-story tower. Fire Chief Rich Dickerson came into the picture next, pounding a 160-pound steel beam five feet across the ground. Dickerson also sprinted 140-feet through an obstacle course. Captain Tim Barrett then dragged a fully-charged 1-3/4 inch hose 75 feet and suc- cessfully hit a target. By this time the Sanibel team knew they were doing well and urged on their final man, Firefighter and Paramedic Tom Tracy, who lugged a life-sized, 175-pound mannequin 100 feet.
