Dharmic Environmentalism: Hindu Traditions and Ecological Care by © Rebecca Cairns A Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Memorial University, Religious Studies Memorial University of Newfoundland August, 2020 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador ABstract In the midst of environmental degradation, Religious Studies scholars have begun to assess whether or not religious traditions contain ecological resources which may initiate the restructuring of human-nature relationships. In this thesis, I explore whether it is possible to locate within Hindu religious traditions, especially lived Hindu traditions, an environmental ethic. By exploring the arguments made by scholars in the fields of Religion and Ecology, I examine both the ecological “paradoxes” seen by scholars to be inherent to Hindu ritual practice and the ways in which forms of environmental care exist or are developing within lived religion. I do the latter by examining the efforts that have been made by the Bishnoi, the Chipko Movement, Swadhyay Parivar and Bhils to conserve and protect local ecologies and sacred landscapes. ii Acknowledgements I express my gratitude to the supportive community that I found in the Department of Religious Studies. The meaning of the Chris- tian confession that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,”1 however, has produced exceedingly diverse interpretations for theological methods and content.2 With the arrival of feminist theo- logians in the middle of the twentieth century, the very credibility of the Christian tradition was retested for its content and relevance based on their insistence that there exists an inseparable causal relationship between gender experience, theological interpretations, and praxis.3 Spe- cifically, feminist theologians argue that orthodox Christology reflects predominantly androcentric patriarchal ideology and therefore has failed to communicate Jesus’ iconoclastic, subversive teaching and life against status systems, especially within religious communities. They, therefore, claim that “the Christ symbol must be reconstructed so that all who engage it may find in it a source of human liberation.”4 1. Heb 13:8 (NIV). 2. Vena, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2009 One of the unfortunate implications of industrialization and the rapid expansion of global commerce is the magnification of the impact that humans have on their environment. Exponential population growth, along with growing technological capabilities, has allowed human societies to alter their terrain in unprecedented and destructive ways. The cumulative effect has been significant to the point that the blame for widespread environmental degradation must be pinned squarely on human shoulders. Because of our dependence on these systems for survival, the threat to the environment is a threat to human life. The root of the ecological crisis is found in human attitudes and behaviors. In the late 1960’s it was suggested that Christianity was a key source of the problem because it promoted the idea of human “dominion” over creation. -

ENVIRONMENTAL RELIGION: A THEOLOGICAL CRITIQUEt Robert H. Nelsont Environmentalism is a type of modem religion. This observation is not as controversial as it might seem. Indeed, many leading envi- ronmentalists have characterized their own efforts in religious terms.' Joseph Sax once wrote that he and fellow preservationists were "secu- lar prophets, preaching a message of secular salvation."2 Theodore Roszak stated in The Voice of the Earth that environmental objectives have a "frankly religious character,, 3 and that the ultimate environ- mental goal should be "to heal the soul of its wounds and guide it to salvation. ' 4 John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club, wrote of a desire to go to the "'high temples of the great Sierra Crown beyond our holy Yosemite"' in order to "'worship with Nature."' 5 Critics of environmentalism often agree that it is a form of religion-although for them it is a misguided faith. -

It is meant to disseminate what we have deemed important information throughout our studies. This information may be used as a tool for all people, women in particular, who wish to dismantle the oppressions they face externally, and within their own lives. We are two men and one woman attempting to grasp at how we can deconstruct the patriarchal foundations upon which we perceive an unjust society has been built. We hope that at least some component of this work will be found useful to a variety of readers. This Zine is meant to be an introduction into anarcha-feminism, its origins, applications, and potentials. Buen provecho! We acknowledge that anarcha-feminism has historically been a western theory; thus, unfortunately, much of this ziners content reflects this limitation. However, we have included some information and analysis on worldwide anarcha-feminists as well as global women's struggles which don't necessarily identify as anarchist. -

ETHICAL TRANS-FEMINISM: BERLIN’S TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS’ NARRATIVES AS CONTRIBUTIONS TO ETHICS OF VEGETARIAN ECO- FEMINISMS By Anja Koletnik Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Gender Studies Supervisor: Assistant Professor Eszter Timár CEU eTD Collection Second Reader: Professor Allaine Cerwonka Budapest, Hungary 2014 Abstract This thesis will explore multi-directional ethical and political implications of meat non- consumption and cisgender non-conformity. My argument will present how applying transgender as an analytical category to vegetarian eco-feminisms, can be contributive in expanding ethical and political solidarity within feminist projects, which apply gender identity politics to their conceptualizations and argumentations. I will outline the potential to transcend usages of gender identity politics upon a cisnormative canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms lead by Carol J. Adams’ The Sexual Politics of Meat (1990). Adams’s canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms appropriates diet as a central resource of their political projects, which contest speciesism and cis-sexism. Like Adams’ canon, my analysis will consider diet as always having political connotations and implications, both for individuals and their embodiments, within broader socio-political realms. Alongside diet, transgender as an analytical category will be employed within analysis, due to its potential of exposing how genders as social categories and constructs are re-formed. My analysis will be based on narrative interviews, which will explore the multi-directional ethical and political implications of meat non-consumption and cisgender non-conformity among members of Berlin’s transgender / cisgender non-conforming and meat non-consuming subcultures. -

• CTSA PROCEEDINGS 51 (1996): 1-14 • Presidential Address TURN TO THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH: RETRIEVAL OF THE COSMOS IN THEOLOGY Prefatory Note. Giving a presidential address is an awesome task, starting with the choice of topic. In the current ecclesial climate I was tempted to focus on the situation of theology or the role of the theologian, both under duress. However, the words of David Power, this year's John Courtney Murray award winner, came to mind. To a faculty demoralized by the unjust removal of one of our colleagues, he as chair of department never ceased repeating, "The best offense is to keep on theologizing." Subvert repression by moving ahead. This is not to say that taking a stand on internal matters is not occasionally necessary. It is. But while theologians have life and breath we must keep on pressing forward, practicing our craft, seeking understanding of the faith for the sake of our own and coming generations. Guided by that wisdom, I have chosen to address the Catholic Theological Society of America on a theological issue that quite literally is coming to be a matter of life or death, namely, the natural world. INTRODUCTION As the twenty-first century rapidly approaches, there is a vital theme largely absent from the thinking of most North American theologians, namely, the whole world as God's good creation. There are a few notable exceptions among our members, but surveying our work as a whole would quickly make this absence clear. This neglect of "the cosmos" by recent decades of mainstream Catholic theology has two deleterious results. -
